Yeah..I have an n1..the oled screen was a huge letdown. The Colors are completely unrealistic. The build quality is horrible, I have tons of dust under the glass in the screen..makes it harder than usual to read outdoors. And contrary to popular belief...he oled screens actually use more power unless the image is stationary or primarily dark/black.
On top of all of that..the supposed 800x480 resolution is hampered by the sub pixel layout making images and text on oled displays seem "dotty". The only screen out there right now that's even close to this new iPhone screen is the droids LCD.

From your own delightfully cherry-picked link....

So, I guess if you are an Aussie, and you really want to scale back your expectations of what is considered HD, then sure. This new phone is TOTALLY a high-def device. But, all of us normal, sensible people will still scoff and laugh at you.

Man, you keep on ranting on and and on without reading any of the posts that destroy your arguments.

These said it well

While 960 X 640 certainly doesn't meet TV HD requirements, (which is fine since it's NOT A TV) it will certainly meet my personal definition of "high definition" and be clearer than... well almost ANYTHING, since it will have so many pixels on a 3.5" screen as opposed to a 50" screen of a TV. The pixel density will be out of this world. Can't wait.

Spot on.

If you're watching a movie on a display that small, 320 dpi is crazy good. You're a hair's breath away from 720p on a handheld device. Unless you watch films with a loupe from your dark room you'll never see the difference between "portable HD (960 x 640)" and "big-@ss plasma/LCD tv HD (720p/1080p)" resolutions on an iPhone. Sheesh.

You want to see every hair on Chewbacca's muzzle as he lets out one of his monosyllabic unintelligible groans (that someone onscreen always manages to construe as a meaningful compound sentence)? If you are over 35, your freaking eyes probably couldn't resolve that level of detail without bifocals anyway.

300 dpi in color can make a decent still photo print. A 320 dpi, constantly refreshing progressive scan display? Man, that'll be gorgeous. At this point, the limitations of the codecs and/or video processing will be the only obstacles to perfect images.

I'll say that 320 dpi is probably at the overkill point, at least for anyone over 40. It's all pointless spec-fight nonsense from here on out.

960 X 640 may not be officially 720p resolution, were talking about a 3 inch screen. At that size, 720p resolution would be completely pointless and retarded. 960 X 640 is more than enough and will look insanely sharp which qualifies as HD to me.

Is there anything we *aren't* gonna know about the next iPhone?! :(
I don't wanna know in advance. I like surprises! :)

Too bad. There's nothing Jobs can do at the WWDC that will be a surprise to anyone. Apple is overly scrutinized. Every tech site follows Apple to the nth degree.

The iPhone HD will no doubt "disappoint" due to lack of surprise.

^^you're clueless

^ I went over the oled stuff just a few posts back,,,they suck

Serious question but does the A4 chip even have the power to play 1280x720 or 1024x768 (ipad native) resolution video?

I know it's more powerful than the old chip in the iphone 3g / 3gs but that's a mighty high resolution. Also there's no extra ram and keeping that resolution in a framebuffer is going to be tricky.

I'm not really complaining, even if the video had to be re-sampled to 960x640 I'm cool with that - I'm just curious if it could even do it.

And here i was about to spring for an iPad. Sod that, i'm SO getting me a new iPhone instead!

He could finish the keynote without unveiling a new iPhone

Well, at the end of every keynote, we've come to expect, "one more thing." It'd be mad ballz rad if he walked off the stage, the music began playing, and the lights came up. Then, while everybody sat for minutes in disbelief of a missing iPhone unveiling...the new iPhone ad just started rolling and Steve came up to finish what he had "forgotten."

Mad ballz rad.

If Apple wants to use it for an Apple Tv it better!

Riddle me this

If someone makes what I am describing, and I described it before the did, would I be entitled to some royalties??

With pixel density like this, how about sitting this screen behind a 6" magnifier? This could be something fold-able and compact, that you could use maybe on a bedside stand, or on an airplane watching a movie.

Woot! I'm so happy about all these rumors. I can't wait to get my hands on one. I have my camping chairs ready.

I'm reading all of it, I just disagree.

You're basically proving my point exactly. The term "HD" is basically pointless. Especially when everyone on here seems to want to bend its definition to fit their needs. Apparently now, we don't quantify HD by its resolution. Now, when Apple comes out with a very high-res small screen, the term HD is a measure of dpi, not sheer resolution.

It certainly is very high-res, and I'm sure the screen will look fantastic. I won't argue that. It just doesn't qualify as HD in my book. But as I said in my initial post, and was proven quite handily by the users in this thread, that doesn't stop anyone from claiming it to be the greatest thing ever. Like I said, the old Zune HD was mocked and ridiculed by users here for having "HD" in the name, but not having a screen that shows HD resolution. But now, when Apple comes out with a device with very high-res screen, and will possibly use the HD moniker in the name, everyone here quickly adjusts the qualification of something being classified as "HD" so that it can be praised.

Kind of sad really, but as I said, fully predictable. So, carry on the fluffing. It really is quite hilarious.
