If it has the retina display and the cameras of the iPhone 4 there's no doubt that I'll purchase it.

If it just has the display and a 3gs camera, I'm not sure, but I think that'd be fine. Facetime is useless for me until you can stream video to things other than Apple users.

sorry, but this can't be true! has everyone forgotten about how apple treats the ipod touch? it first didn't have a loudspeaker and also no microphone input (not even via headset). then they added the speaker and micro via headset but "forgot" about camera. and now someone really think apple will add a microphone, a camera AND a frontfacing camera AND a retina display? ha, ha! this is a good joke...

the ipod touch is an ipod and a game console. it's competitor is the psp and the nintendo ds. if apple is not forced to add some functionallity, they won't.

Except the DS has cameras now, and the new Pokemon game coming out is supposed to have video chat. Yup, apple needs to compete.

If it has a rear video 720p camera, I'd happily pay $400 for a 64GB (assuming a retina display, of course).

yeah, retina display!

But please, Apple - add that fantastic five-megapixel 720p video recording camera from the iPhone 4 to the touch. I will love you. I'll pay for it, too.

Exactly I dont care if its as thick as the iphone 4 I want 720p 5mp recording!

Screw the iPod touch!!

I WANT A 64 GB IPHONE! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR??? :D

+1!

I think we might see it early in the new year, Apple bumps its capacity to spike sales until next June/July (at which point they release iPhone 5 with no capacity bump, again waiting for the new year '12 for that mini update).

On another note, am I the ONLY person who - when I see "Dell Streak" read "Dell Steak" every single time?

Are you serious? Of course it's gonna be a retina display. Ever since the leaked photos! Just look at the difference between today's iPod's/iPhone's glass. The Retina displays glass is much dark than previous multi-touch displays. And even though if this photo isn't a glass piece for the iPod touch, it's obvious that iPod Touch will no doubt be rocking out that Retina Display this September. It's like saying that the iPod Touch isn't going to be adopting the gyroscope?

Please put a GPS chip in there for the joggers, mountain bikers, social check-ins, etc, etc.

I had to look up the Dell Streak and this is what I found...

Dell's Streak made its international debut in the U.K. in June, although there were reports of a sluggish launch on the other side of the Atlantic.

Sounds like a iPod Touch threat to me! Wake me up when it's over. :p

People always want more more features, but who is willing to pay more money for it? 128GB Flash memory is still too expensive to consider. Retina Display is also one of the most expensive part for iPhone 4. Ipod touch is going to start at 199 dollars. With these prices, I don't see how apple is going to put Retina Display with two Cameras. I just don't.

Well, let's see. If I remember correctly, the iPhone costs Apple around $180 to make a pop. Removing the phone components, I'm guessing this'll bring it down to around $150.

As for NAND memory, this is how it goes. As we know, the iPod Touch occupies two 32GB NAND chips, and the iPhone uses one. This chip costs around $16 (if memory serves). A 64GB NAND chip was released last year. Initially, the pricing was too high (close to $100). Last time I saw the pricing, it was around $60. I assume it's even less now. Let's assume it costs $30 now ($60 for 2). This would leave use with a starting price of $200, with regards to the production costs. That would be a double profit for Apple, using the $399 price point.

This is merely estimates; I could be way off track.

It will be interesting to see what they leave in from the iPhone... if they really want to make a splash... leave it just like the iPhone minus the phone and the death grip!

It's either one of these or a new notebook this year.

Why not both? I'm doing it. ;)

I seriously want a decent camera though. I never remember or am to lazy to bring a camera places, and my cell phone's camera is a pain to deal with. Would like to start taking photos again though.

Please put a GPS chip in there for the joggers, mountain bikers, social check-ins, etc, etc.

Been wanting one of these since the first generation iPt. Apple seems to have no interest however, so getting an external GPS attachment and jailbreaking is the best solution at this point.

I believe in years past they wait until after the free iPod Touch with new Mac for students and teachers deal is over before the new Touch comes out.

The next DS will have a 3D display. I think the ipod touch needs a serious restyle.
it was cool 3 years ago, now it's nothing special.
An iphone 4 without phone would be great!

If they want it to be compatible with the iMovie app then I'd bet 720p video recording is a definite. It also seems like they went all-out in terms of specs in the iPhone 4, so maybe they will with this too?

I was also really interested in a new touch until I first got my hands on an iPad

I really hope they change the design of the iPod Touch and go back to a square design and make it look like the iPhone 4.

I am assuming a price raise or no deal...

Apple would not make a profit on it...

Didn't ifixit quote the iPhone at like 180 dollars? If Apple was not receiving a big check from AT&T for signing new customers then the iPhone would not have been priced that, so there is no way the iPod Touch could get all of that.

180 + Manufacturing + (R&D) + Packaging + Shipping from China = More than 200 a iPod.

Every year Apple doubles the memory of the iPod touch and adds a few new features, and sells it for the same price as the year before. As Apple did not double the iPhone's memory, I'm guessing they won't do it with the iPod touch either. Which means they can add extra features they wouldn't normally.

Personally, I can't wait to view slightly downscaled 720p video on the retina screen. Should be awesome.

I asked to buy an iphone, at cost, with the data plan of an ipad. Basically I wanted an ipod with 3g service. They (ATT) said no way. Some of us are willing to pay, just no one to take our money.

highly doubt a back camera. they got rid of the rounds on the iphone cause it made it thinner. they aren't gana make the ipod thicker

The offer of a free iPod Touch for students buying a new iMac expires on September 7, 2010, so I'd guess that any new Touch model will be delayed until then.

Well yes and no, at one stage Apple was looking at starting their own phone company to release the iPhone at all, but then did the deal that lead to AT&T in the u.s. at least and saw the iPhone hit the shelves. I'm sure the missing features from the iPod Touch was all to do with that deal.

Thing is Apple know that what is coming for mobile phone is just a big fat pipe. So they launched Facetime which may have been part of the plan all along. Facetime is a mostly a system to connects your call to others with a big fat pipe (and a compatible device, which should be coming soon from others) plus video.

So bringing the iPod touch ever closer to being and iPhone without the phone company would seem to fit nicely in to the plan all along. Apple have even looked at WiFi sharing systems that build broader area connectivity by signing up to the network, which they could add to the airport systems. Imagine if Wifi became a co-operative network not the competitive one we have now. With a system like that they could get enough coverage that kids could have an iPod touch instead of a phone, yet still have full connection between their houses friends places local shops and schools.

Still if the iPod touch is a games platform, although from apples own statements this market seems to be a happy accident more than part of the business plan, then introducing network play and chat features seems to be in demand as well and would sure be a reason to introduce Game Center and then overlay those features into that.

Then again like Facetime these maybe ways of driving demand for co-op wifi systems.

But that's all speculation.
