iPhone sells will suck if this is true.
...
I think the cameras make some sense but the Retina display shouldn't come with this update; What will attract new customers to get the phone? (And please don't reply "People will buy the Phone over the Touch because it's a phone"

There are a lot of reasons to forgo the iPhone for an iPod Touch plus a separate phone. My company has a contract with Verizon, giving us a 19% discount. That makes an iPhone unrealistic for me, despite the fact that I think it's a great device.

We should also remember who earns what in this game. Apple gets money from the sale of the device, while ATT gets money from the contract and services. So the bulk of Apple's income is 'blind' to the iPhone vs. iTouch...you buy a device either way!

If it is going to have a retina display, they had better make it capable of recording and displaying HIDef video. If they cheap out and stick an iPod Nano camera in there I will be keeping my 2G iPT.

Basically, its going to be an iPhone 4 w/o the phone.

If this is true, why not get the 16G iPhone and the 64G iPod touch? Use the iPhone for all your smartphone apps. Use the iPod touch for all your media, games, photos, movies.

I am thinking I might do this. You can also skype using WiFi on the iPod touch if you really need to make a call.

This guy is an idiot. I'm no Mac fanboy, don't own one, but Dell is a lousy competitor in the PC market; let alone the portable entertainment market.

I think more what he's getting at is that Dell should be the competitor most able to complete from a pricing standpoint.

[Putting on my tinfoil hat now]

Apple has very good price points for the tablet devices (iPod Touch, iPad). I can see it becoming a line. Change the name of the iPod Touch to "iPad." Then offer 3.5" iPad (formerly iPod Touch), 5", 7", 9.7". Pricing could look something like this for each entry level (smallest amount of memory) iPad size:

3.5" - $200
5" - $300
7" - $400
9.7" - $500

I Use 64GB iPod Touch + 32GB iPhone 4 + 64GB iPad 3G All Together

Need 32GB iPhone 4 just to be able to store 4 hours of HD video on it. You can store 5 hours if it's empty with no apps. But I have over 6GB of apps on my new iP4 already. So a 16GB iP4 is very limited in that with a decent amount of apps you can only store little more than an hour of video on it. Empty it holds only 2 hours of video. Weak.

Anyway, my 64GB iPT is full so I'm hoping for 128GB on the new one. I don't know what the price of 64GB NAND flash is so it's not clear to me when it will equal the price of last year's 32s. But I would be willing to pay $499 for a 128GB iPT even without the cameras and Retina display. So maybe Apple will offer a more expensive higher capacity iPT to serve high memory users like me.

Have to have my 64GB iPad 3G with me all the time too. Wonder how many iDevice users are like me with an iPT in my left breast pocket for music, iP4 in my right breast pocket for phone & GPS stuff and the iPad in my backpack for email & web browsing all the time.

They pretty much have to do this, anything less would be completely underwhelming after the iphone 4.

Yeah, this sounds way to good to be true. I've been waiting for an ipod touch with a front facing camera & if it includes face time even better. This could hold me over until we get an ipad with the camera.

Let's just hope apple won't disappoints us like last year's event.
patiently waiting...:)

Retina display would be the seller for me. Never cared much for using an iPhone as a camera.

You have too much money on your hands. It's actually gross....

There aren't many of your kind. On the one hand, I wouldn't mind having an iPhone and an iPod, but I would more likely have a Classic in addition to the phone then. More space and tactile feedback. iPad is out of question for me as long as long as I have an iPhone and a MacBook.

Oh, by the way, the price of electronic components have a an average half-life of 18 months. It might take another few months until we will see an iDevice with 64 GB single-chips.

I'm betting it will be a must have update. How many people like myself who have Verizon are waiting for an iPhone and already own a touch. I carry my crappy LG flip phone and my touch. If a nice shiny new iPod comes out now, I will likely buy it. But then come January, darn you Apple, I want the new Verizon iPhone.

we were screwed out of a camera because jobs wanted this release to be more groundbreaking, and he didn't want to include a crappy 2mp camera.

Since we have been screwed over before, apple will now "repent for its sins" and make it up to us.

someone also said the touch updates are crappy, so we are getting our hope up. to that i say that they were just learning then, and technology wasn't as advanced as it is now.

How much is an unlocked iPhone? 600-700? Apple receives money from AT&T far in excess of the selling price of the phone. How can in iPod Touch have the features of the iPhone 4 minus the GSM chip and not cannibalize iPhone 4 sales? Additionally, how can AT&T continue to charge 3G fees for tethering and also for the iPad with devices like the mifi popping up? Isn't the future every device having a 3G/4G chip and you pay per kilobyte? And Facetime availability on the iPod Touch now suggests that Apple views selling more devices as being more important than the extra revenue from selling phones.

Apple (and Google with their very capable iOS rip-off) are in the process of destroying the business model of mobile carriers. Everything will be data. And pricing a kb of data in a competitive environment is much harder than getting customers to sign a contract and pay a monthly fee and cream-skim certain customers.

Rambling, I know, but I think the iPod Touch will soon have the ability to crush the way mobile carriers operate. Combine the Touch with the device Clear is offering...

I'd go with just 3 sizes

3.5" (3:2 ratio with minimalist bezel)
5.5" (3:2 ratio with minimalist bezel)
9.7" (4:3 ratio with large bezel for gripping)

I see no point in having a somewhat smaller iPad (rumored 7" size) that still doesn't fit in a pocket. If I can't stick it in a pocket or clip it on my belt I'm not going to take it everywhere, therefore I'm not going to use it much, therefore I'm not going to buy it.

Likewise I see no point in having an internet enabled device that doesn't at least have the option of 3G. Even though my current iPod touch fits in my pocket it rarely goes anywhere with me because most places don't have WiFi.
For that reason alone I will never buy another WiFi only device.

I like your thinking... makes sense.

Same here. I also think 3G + wifi should really be the default, at least 2011 onward. (if not 2011, then 2012) Why? Have it there when and if you need it. 3G radios will get cheep.

Bt then 4G will become standard...

Is it really confirmed and definite that we will need to sign a 2 year contract for a frikin ipod???
and why for an for ipod?? WHICH PART!

Hope not.I'd much rather bring my own wifi and skip the extra contract. You can use pay as you go service on the road and wireless at home. If there's a contract required, I guess I'll keep my old ipod touch2g, instead.
