I thought I wouldn’t care about the lack of ProMotion on my next Macs, because I got a 2020 iPad Pro this spring, and I never missed the high refresh rate on other devices.

But now that I’ve had an iPhone 13 Pro for a week, scrolling text on my Macs is incredibly jarring. So I may have to rethink the whole “settle for a consumer model” on the next upgrade. I’m sure the higher refresh rates will trickle down eventually, but I don’t think it’ll happen on the next consumer Mac intro.

The wedge shaped MacBook Airs are ergonomically far superior to the rectangular shaped Pros. I would be very disappointed if they dropped the wedge,
I have long thought tilting the keyboard slightly toward the user was an ergonomically smart idea.

That said I have never thought much of laptop designs given how far the keyboard is from the edge of the device. Some are worse than others, of course.

I take it for granted the world is full of things that are popular which I personally don’t get. There are genres of music I really dislike and get on my nerves, but I cannot deny they’re popular with others. There are films and television series that appear to be popular, but personally don’t interest me in the least and I will never bother with. There are fashion trends I find totally bizarre and I think look outright stupid, but some embrace them.

Thats how the world works.

It’s tempting to think our own personal viewpoints represent a sort of overall truth, but unless they’re based on something more substantial than subjective opinion then they’re largely meaningless in the bigger scheme of things.

A smart business bases its approach on more than just whim and subjective opinion. They will act on the best factual data available to them. Yes, there is an element of intuition and guessing, but it still needs factual data as a starting point.

Apple’s current design language isn’t just something arbitrary they’re pulling out of their backside. There has to be an element of market research telling them what kind of products have a better chance of success with the buyers they’re hoping to reach as well as maintain. No, they don’t always get it right—well evidenced with the introduction of the touchbar and eliminating legacy ports on the previous MBP which they are now putting back on the new MPB models. But overall they have been having a pretty good success rate these past twenty some years.

To that end I find cries and proclamations Apple is going down a stupid and misguided path is laughable.

I get the impassioned pleas, criticisms and desires. There aren't many other brands who have such a rabid fans. So much so that Apple products become an extension of themselves. So when it doesn't fit their aesthetic, it somehow is an assault on them and their style.

There are certainly design decisions I've cringed at. But also others that I've grown to like and appreciate. And as you alluded to, they're more often 'right' than wrong. Usually they set the trend for at least 5 years and spawn knockoffs and a cottage industry of accessories.

It's bad enough having a notch on the new MacBook Pro's - but at least it has black bezels so it looks like you can hide it with some software trickery and turning the display off. But if the off-white bezel on the the MacBook Air turns out to be true, I can't see this being hidden with software.

This is the main reason I always go for the black front face on an iPhone, as it disappears when the display is off.

White bezels are terrible. No way Apple put both a notch and white bezels in the next MBA
White bezels and a black notch would be my guess.

I had no issues with a with bezel on my old iMacs or iBooks. This is going to be a completely non-issue for the majority of folk.

The notches are absolutely pathetic. Once again, Apple doubles down on a widely mocked design failure. Actually, it's not even a failure, because failure implies trying. Apple gave up on doing actual design work years ago.

It's sad that Apple finally shìtcans the embarrassing emoji bar and defective keyboards, but then introduces this blunder.

White bezels? No wedge? Snap up the current Air while you can! It's still the best value in my opinion.
It would be great if Apple offered the current MBA along side the new design like they are doing with the MBP. While I am dreaming, it would be even better if they gave the current MBA a processor bump to the same one in the new design. I think there are people that would prefer the current wedge shaped notch less design in professional color options and with the updated M2 (or whatever) processor.

Apple will probably increase the price of the new MBA by a couple of hundred bucks, and there are people that would prefer the old form factor with a new processor at a reduced price.

Color options is exciting. I was hoping the MBP would have some color options that were darker and more professional versions of the iMac's colors. I love color but I'm not a big fan of the lighter colors. It's just not my style

I completely disagree and I don't think you working at Apple store gives anymore validity to your opinion, these colors were not available when you work there.how do you predict people's reaction?
iPhone 5C was discontinued for this reason.these childish colors don't appeal to majority of people.
You're allowed incorrect opinions, it's all good.

When you spend 7 years working the Bar, we can compare notes. Until then, you've got far less experience watching Apple's customers than I do ?

The 5C was discontinued because the SE came along, not due to poor sales.

If you think those of us on MacRumors represent Apple's typical customers, you couldn't be less correct.

Watching full screen would be horrible if the notch was white. With a black notch you can simply hide it by turning off pixels.
But since the machine will have white bezels anyway, I bet you Apple will find a way to add matching white filler pixels to the top strip while in full screen so it will just appear as a thicker white bezel.

every time I see that dang white notch with the black cutouts!

At this point I fully believe they would do both. The fact that they actually put a notch in a freakin’ notebook screen means they’ll do pretty much anything. We’re in clown World here people. Everything is on the table. If the next report says the palm areas will be carpeted, I’ll at least consider it a possibility.
great post!
the "clown world" reference is very true!

also
will the pentalobe screws (if there are any) that keeps the bottom cover one have a whiteish bezel in the slot?

We had white bezels on iPhones to iPads for more than a decade.. I seriously don't understand the hatred towards this..
On the iPhones they had a noticeable shading effect between the screen and bezel, which IMO looked untidy and didn’t show up on the black bezels.
I’m fine with colors and white bezel, but please for the love of God, put black keys on that. White keys get dirty real fast!
Don’t worry, they probably won’t fix the keyboard touching the screen when closed so you have to keep the keys spotless to stop them printing on the screen.

These are going to sell like hot cakes.

After working 7 years behind the Genius Bar, I can assure you regular consumers (who are your typical MacBook Air customers) don't care one iota about white bezels/keys... they care about having a pink/orange/blue/green computer.

Expect a notch too. Yet another thing regular consumers don't give a sh*t about.
I'm not sure how I feel about white bezels but that mockup looks delicious. I really hope they ditch the "Air" moniker and just make these the default new "Macbook." The Air has always had a wedge design and it just doesn't seem like an Air without one (which is why the current iPad Air weirds me out).

Somehow I don't think so.

Color matching the screen and notch to glossy black is simple, just turn off the unessesary lighting zones and pixels. Job done.

Color matching white however would require extremely expensive, and require highly color accurate panels to look remotely good. Not to mention even if you could do it reasonably well (initially), just a 1% variation in color temperature between batches would be very noticable and make it look like crap. Never mind the color calibration fluctuation over time.

White bezels will make the computer look like a chintzy toy, perhaps to motivate people to buy the "Pro."

Or perhaps this impression is really a dash of honesty, since Apple computers are now glued-together disposable items with soldered-in RAM and SSDs that can't be fixed when they go bad. And they WILL go bad.

Designed obsolescence.... Especially moving forward with the gen Z and Alphas.

Its happening all around us. Even cars are getting difficult to repair. John Deere Fudged up too.

I see that Apple makes a lot of profit off AppleCare and has an excellent "image" of "going-green".

While I do believe they recycle their rare-earth metals. They use some pretty shady techniques to get people to trade-in/upgrade/unusable so recycle it or buy a new one strategy.

Reminds me of Fight Club when they steal the ****(liposuction clinic) waste, make soap. Then sell it back to their RICH @$$e$.

Casual misogyny aside, what about people who "want a stylish machine" would make you think those are the types of users who are MORE likely to want an ugly white bezel?
I'm a marketing consultant for some of the world's biggest technology companies.

I hate to break it to you - but gender is one of many factors that we track, measure, and consider when it comes to product development.

I guess the entire technology marketing industry are casual misogynists?

Or in the Marketing industry in general ?

Gotta be careful around these forums. These Mac "artists" are sensitive....

Was there any mention of the screen size?
13" or 14"?

If it's 14", it's probably 100% likely it's getting a notch
but if it's 13", that seems a little less likely since they'd probably just re-use the panels they already have?

Either way this "MacBook" will probably end up replacing the $1299 13" MacBook Pro (explaining the "price increase") and the M1 MacBook Air will remain as the entry level option.

I can't see them getting rid of the $999 MacBook Air and bumping up the price, that'd be suicide for their education market.
14" doesn't have to be with notch. 14.2" is with notch don't forget.
