So are we going to wait again in June for whatever coming after the Montevina? And asking where the redesign, bluray or whatever?

hahah basically...

I bet when the new MBP's were announced everyone jumped at the chance since they were eager from MWSF... now they catch wind of a June revision, I'm sure there are some who are going to wait even longer... I personally just swapped my 1 month old MBP with a new one courtesy of Apple's excellent support and customer service. :apple:

If you need it, get it

I think its pretty simple. Its technology. You can wait all you want, because the "rumors and news" are always going to be ahead of whats out there. Look at the iPhone - one day 8g, the next 16g, and already announcements of a 3G version coming. You gotta make the leap sometime. Its not like Apple is producing inferior machines. Will it not do what you need it to do, and pretty damn good at it as well?

I just hate to hear people bitch about it. I just don't understand the complaining.

Apple insiders confirmed the company will refresh its notebook lineups in June, which comes as no surprise since all Centrino partners indicated they will announce notebooks based on the new Montevina Centrino 2.
No, actually it is a surprise. Apple is known for updating things when it feels like it, with no regard to what other notebook makers do generally. Why? Because those notebook makers aren't Apple's direct competitors! They can't run OSX. Apple doesn't have to worry about competing spec-wise with any other Mac laptop maker because they have a monopoly on the hardware. This is one of the things that made the existence of desktop clones in the 90's so great. Power Computing was speed king for most of their existence.

People bellyache about the graphics cards Apple ships with systems being year or two year old tech all the time, same with front side buses.

I see this as a good thing if Intel's going to start ending chip/processor platforms to get manufacturers to upgrade. It means Apple's lineup will be updated more often and use more current technology. Better machines for consumers.

So does this mean the notebook forums will be saturated with 'should I buy now or wait?' threads for the next 4 months?

Some gestapo-style moderating can be employed. Start or bless one thread as the "offical" one, and close any new ones as soon as they appear with a post telling the participants to go to the designated one.

This is the problem when you team up with Intel. I hate this rapid hardware turnovers. Reminds me of my dreaded PC (which I only use for games these days).

Yes, that would be nice, as would Blu-Ray. Now that the HD wars are over, Apple needs to get Blu-Ray in ASAP.

But as for screen resolution, there may be other issues. OS X is now resolution independent, so that's not a problem. In the past, however, Apple held off on the highest resolution screens because they didn't offer the quality Apple wanted. Sure, you got high resolution, but at the expense of color accuracy or brightness or contrast. I don't know if that's the case today (I haven't looked at any 15" screens), but if it is, I'd agree with it. I personally prefer quality to specs. After all, you're not really going to see the difference between native 1900x1200 and 1440x900 on a 15" screen, anyway (unless you have incredible vision). You WILL see the difference between a good quality screen and a poor one.

Last autumn i bought a HP Compaq 8510w for work, with a 15" 1900x1200 screen. To me the screen looks great with good contrast, but I must admit that I haven't checked the color accuracy.

Anyway, I think it's ridiculous that a business laptop like the 15" MBP isn't available with higher resolution screens. For me it's definitely a deal-breaker and if it weren't for the new rumors appearing today, I really would had to consider switching to a pc laptop. Yesterdays release was disappointing, but if Apple can make it up in June, I still have money to spend.

Dang it! What's with Apple? I thought the release yesterday would stop forum hijacking...but with this, it might continue =(. People will put off the penryn update for this one. :(

Can you do that ? my MB is 1 month old and I can't hide the fact that I would love to have the new processor but I dunno if that is possible ?

It will be a decent upgrade, but not earthshaking. Montevino is essentially an improved Penryn. The next MAJOR upgrade will be Moorestown (early 2009, IIRC). Moorestown offers an integrated memory controller (and, optionally, video and wireless on the CPU chip) which will significantly improve performance and power consumption.
Early '09 also happens to coincide with the scheduled appearance of mobile Nehalem. That plus Moorestown would be a huge upgrade to Apple's mobile line.

How did you swing that? Pretty nice that they did that!!!! Maybe if this june thing is gold, the new buyers can do that.

Any folks know (in a rough sense, obviously) the performance difference between Penryn and Montevina? I'm assuming it will be minor but not insignificant, but am curious (as I just bought a BlackBook off of Amazon). Not going to cancel my order or anything, just curious.

Will people EVER learn?? Penryn is a PROCESSOR, Montevina is a PLATFORM. Montevina platform will use Penryn processors.

Ask about the difference between Penryn and MEROM.

Ask about the difference between Montevina and SANTA ROSA.

Is it too much to ask for people to understand what they are saying BEFORE they say it.

As for the talk of new upgrades in June ... GREAT!! For those who say their purchase of YESTERDAY will be outdated in June ... SO WHAT! Your car from two years ago is outdated too, are you buying a new one every year? Not if it still works. What about your cell phone from 3 months ago? It's outdated too. There is ALWAYS something bigger, better, faster and nicer on the horizon.

There are those who complain about waiting while saying their Powerbook Titanium is holding out until the NEW updates come. 5 years is a WEE BIT more outdated than the 4 months between now and June. But wHOA!!! What's that?!? The computer is STILL WORKING TODAY?!?! Go figure. Even though it is OUTDATED?!?! Dang!!

The updates from yesterday will work GREAT for several years to come, regardless of software upgrades or hardware updates into the future.

It has been said MANY TIMES already ... BUY NOW if you want or need a new computer now ... BUY LATER if you want to wait. It's your choice. But SHUT UP about something that hasn't even happened yet!! There are no guarantees.

Why??

Because if Apple DOES NOT release new MBPs and/or MBs in June, then those who waited will then complain about the information that was given in February which PREVENTED them from buying in February.

The ONLY THING preventing people from buying the best computer out there NOW, is their FOOLISHNESS (and I'm not referring to those who can't afford one) and/or their STUPIDITY. Those who can't afford a new MBP shouldn't be complaining about delays in present offerings or potential for future offerings. Why not?? They won't buy ANY computer available, regardless of what it offers or doesn't offer!!

There ... I feel better now. :D

My bet is that Apple will delay Blu-Ray support for mobiles until the introduction of Calpella. Calpella provides hardware support for H.264 decoding.

Moorestown is for UMPCs, not laptops

Early '09 also happens to coincide with the scheduled appearance of mobile Nehalem. That plus Moorestown would be a huge upgrade to Apple's mobile line.

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/5054091/

Moorestown is a slow, small, super power-efficient chip for UMPCs, PDAs, small tablets, large phones.

You would not like a MacBook with a Moorestown chip, unless your only concern is battery life.

This is why apple should offer matte screen options on all their laptops & desktops.

Let's hope they get their act together for the next releases.

With regards to the MacBook Pro it seems to me that Apple's just doing what they have to in order to keep up with Intel

Which is fine, since they're just keeping up to speed. If it ain't broke...etc. I, like most people here, am not wow-ed by these updates, but they're another little step forward. It seems a little like what they did at the end of the Powerbook's life. I wouldn't be surprised if by the next update we see a new case, likely involving some space-saving wonder drawn from the MacBook Air team to thin and lighten the produce.

Surprise Surprise

No sooner than everyones questions of "i'm dying to buy, hurry up and upgrade MB/MBP Apple or else" come along that now it's starting again the very next day. Now it's "Oh, June is not far away maybe i'll wait for that instead? What do you think?" etc etc.

Just buy one already!! There are always going to be updates just around the corner. Deal with it.
