hey guys I am about to buy a new macbook pro and was wondering if it is really worth getting the 4GB of ram memory or just go with the 2GB of ram. I was just wondering if all computers will eventually go to a 4GB of ram standard and just might as well get it now so my computer wont seem as outdated later on ;)

Yes, memory is cheap and 4GB will let you multitask many programs and is great for photo/video edting and 3D. Hth

Not crying here :). I'm typing on my first Mac (new MBP). I was full aware of Montevina was coming out sooner than most would expect. But its a new ball game using Intel. Upgrades and new chips come out fast. Apple is just keeping up with the changes.

I started looking to get my first Mac in Dec. I estimated an update Jan happend one month later, no big deal. Montevina doesnt impress me whatsoever. Thats not the update you really hold out for. I bought now to upgrade in 2-3 yrs when SSD's are mainstream. Infact, once I saw SSD's being incorporated, I knew the faster I buy this MBP , the better. I''ll get 2-3 yrs of great use before i'm tempted to upgrade.

Montevina lol, give me a break. I looked at that very closely and I saw no reason to wait 4-6 months for it. But hey thats me :) . Now i'm enjoying a brand new MBP !!! Wait if you can, nothing wrong with that. But this is my first Mac, i'm not gonna wait months after I decided to switch in Dec lol.

Congratulation and also a warning .... From now on you are HOOKED. Wlecome to the comunity.

Who knows? My answer is the same as the answer to the previous question. If the mini meets your needs and you need a computer, buy it. If it doesn't meet your needs, don't.

AFAIC, trying to guess what the future might hold (other than the obvious - faster systems, more storage space, more RAM) is entertaining. Basing your purchase decisions on it, though, is silly.

Your original statement was authorative, it sounded like you were connected, that is why I asked.

But is it worth getting the extra 2GB of ram through apple because of the cost. I have heard of other ways to get it through other companies. What do u guys recommend?

LOL I'm not even going to trust this forum anymore. You say June? I bet you it'd be here in September or something.

Changing the size of the trackpad and incorporating a Macbook style magnetic latch would require some redesign of the casing. It would be minor, but it would change the general look of the book (sorry for the rhyme). I think the lack of a larger touchpad in this latest version of the MBP is telling. They added the functionality of an enhanced but multitouch, but did abolsutely nothing that would change the casing even the slightest amount. If the MBP design overhaul were more than a year out, you might think they would make this small adjustment to the case to take full advantage of the new feature.

I agree 100%. They're clearly putting a lot of R&D into multi-touch and hyping it with the MBA. So then to not put a larger touchpad on the MBP?

Along these same lines, with their darling MBA they went with the MB style keyboard and the mag-latch, so its clear that Apple sees those as top-of-the-line features. So to have them absent in the MBP still... I think it points to a more significant revision on the way.

Ditto for the MB and still no multi-touch, or LED display.

This was basically a speed-bump that left a lot of obvious changes waiting in the wings.

Edit: So it makes sense that these changes would be put on hold until the smaller footprint montevino platform which will let them slim things down a bit while they're at it.

does this mean they will be updating the outside of the MBs too?

and does anyone know how long the current MB look/ design has been around?

The MBP design that I hope Apple implements at WWDC 2008

I'm with the whiners on this one. I want a complete redesign. Or, at least, a new keyboard. Hopefully at WWDC?

I made a quick mockup of the MBP I hope to purchase in June (or something very similar). I think the MBA's tapered design would work very well if they made it a little thicker. I didn't do a top view, but it would have the MBA's black keyboard (or maybe a fancier silver color, but MacBook style). I think this would be one beautiful computer and it definitely has the "wow" factor like the iMacs do.

I am of the opinion that the MacBook Air is, in Apple's mind, much like the Apple TV. Both are prototypes of what's to come. The markets are small enough for each product that they are great for testing to see what works and what doesn't. Revision 2 of MBA = New MBP. In this case, the low end MBP would be the MBA, without the optical drive and extra thickness.

Any thoughts?

So are we going to wait again in June for whatever coming after the Montevina? And asking where the redesign, bluray or whatever?
Not me. My boy's off to UF, gotta have a killer laptop to get him through college. Figure I might as well wait until I can get the absolute most bang for my buck. Will be the last 'puter I ever have to buy him :D

LOL I'm not even going to trust this forum anymore. You say June? I bet you it'd be here in September or something.
I'll be lending him my Core Duo MacBook until it is released if that's the case.

Lets say there are two approaches to buying computers:

1. Buy every couple years, sell the old one. If you have the budget for this, it doesn't matter so much when you buy because you'll be getting another one soon enough.

2. Buy one and "drive it into the ground," ie: until it really starts to get slow on you, and you really NEED an upgrade (say 4+ years now on my trusty G4PB). In that case when you buy a new one and it's going to be your machine for the next 4+ years, you might want to wait for such features like LED screen, multi-touch, (on the MB).

Processors will always be upgraded, but which keyboard you'll be typing on for the next X years might be worth considering.

This is a rumors site so no surprise that people here are interested in when things are being updated and how and when they want to buy!

I wonder how long people keep their laptops before upgrading?

But is it worth getting the extra 2GB of ram through apple because of the cost. I have heard of other ways to get it through other companies. What do u guys recommend?

NO! Apple's RAM is always overpriced. Also, installing RAM is super-easy and doesn't void your AppleCare.

And as far as technology updates go, there will always be more updates around the corner. It's how technology works. Will you be sorry that you didn't get that extra 100MHz or 1GB of RAM or 20GB of HDD space? Probably not. If you bought the day before the update should you be angry? Not if you bought refurbished! :p There is pretty much no reason to not buy Apple Refurbished (except if your employer/education discount brings the price so close that it doesn't matter).

I played the waiting game last year with my iMac and ended up buying it nearly 6 months later. I realized that this was the right choice for me, as waiting these 6 months allowed me to be able to afford the 24" iMac. I also got the revised iMac design, which (personally) I am a fan of. After having this computer for a while, I realize that I probably didn't need to buy the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme, as I don't utilize it much.

Also, especially in a laptop, evaluate what you actually use it for. Are you really going to become an avid gamer because you bought a computer that can handle the latest games at full resolution? Are you really going to become a graphic artist because your new computer can run the Adobe Creative Suite better? Probably not. For example, my (gasp!) 500MHz G3 iBook works pretty darn well for internet, email, iTunes, and MS Office. Sure it can't play Crysis at max settings. But there are plenty of games it can play that, although being older games, are still quite fun! (namely Starcraft and Warcraft I - amazing games that run quite well on my iBook) What most people need in a laptop is portability and battery life. That's why I'm pretty happy with my iBook - with its relatively new battery, it gets 4-4.5 hours of battery life, and being 12", it is easy to carry around. That's what matters most to me - and to a lot of people. (not to mention that my iBook is practically indestructible - my friend with his Fujitsu Lifebook cringes when I grab my iBook with one hand!)

If you MUST always have that extra 100MHz, that extra 10GB of hard drive space, the absolute latest and greatest, you will pay a premium. Evaluate your needs and buy what you need, when you need it.

1. harsh or bitter derision or irony.

and to think, I tried using my MBP as a door stop, darn thing wouldn't keep the door open so apparently it isn't good for that either. ;)

Save your money...

You should get 4GB of ram, but don't pay $400 to get it from apple. Buy you MBP with 2GB standard ram and buy your own ram at some other store like FRYS.com, they have the 4GB crucial kit for $75 plus shipping. I don't think it's too difficult to do.

Are there any Quad Core laptop processors on the horizon?

I wonder how expensive DDR3 will be. I may just chill out now on buying.
I suggest waiting until there's a mobile platform that supports DDR3 SODIMMs.

I like it a lot with the tapered edges. Just make sure glossy is an option. ;)

But that's just the thing... it didn't seem like it was being stated with sarcasm. People say some pretty stupid things without them being sarcastic.

if Apple keeps releasing new notebooks every time Intel's got something new, when will it even out and, when should someone be able to buy a MacBook(Pro) without having it as well phased out and replaced by another?

you're missing an important part of it. who says we have to update every time apple releases a new notebook? If I buy a macbook tomorrow, it will be four months old in June regardless of whether or not Apple updates. I, for one, would have no problem with updates every 4 months-- that's great! That would mean that no one would have to buy a computer more then 4 months old --ever!

people need to stop freaking out about having "obsolete" models. A 4-month old computer is not obsolete, even if there have been a million updates since you bought it.

Buy a computer when you need it -- replace it when you need to.

My still use a notebook that is 7 years old. The battery doesn't hold a charge, but we have it set up in the play room for my little siblings to use......it's a Dell.
