The coating does not somehow make the glass itself more prone to scratching so if the 3gs where be be more prone to scratching (not that i think this is the case) then it would be the coating itself that is being scratched. A thin coating is much easier to remove than buffing glass down to remove a scratch.

What part of that didn't you understand?

Yes yes, the coating itself gets scratched, I get it, BUT IT´S PART OF THE FREAKING PHONE! It´s not like you can just take it off, when it´s been scratched and then live happily with the (3G) glass that was beneath it.

Now check this example out:

They replaced my 3G S this morning at the Apple store because the coating was rubbing off in the middle and across the bottom. I have a screen protector on it now but I always hated using them before.

In this case if there wasn´t the oleophobic coating, this person wouldn´t have had to go return the 3GS and ask for a new one.

And it´s kinda ridiculous that now we have more need to use 3rd party screen protectors or then just to treat the 3GS with golden gloves, when with 3G we didn´t have to (at least not that much). Phones are meant to be used not babied, so they have to be ROBUST!

I like you.

Scary. :)

When the guy at the Apple store saw it, he said he was going in the back to clean the screen. He came back and had a new one to replace it with and I was out of there in about five minutes.

The coating rubbed off with normal everyday usage. I don't play games on it and I do use apps that involve scrolling. The middle where it was rubbing off was where I tend to scroll the most. It was also wearing off at the bottom where the slide to unlock it. It was mostly noticeable at work and outside in the car. At home, I couldn't see it, wrong lighting I guess.

Had mine since the day it came out... not 1 scratch on it... no peeling nothing... I love it.. no more oily screen... amazing

I despise the new coating. I love the fact that it keeps fingerprints off, but it feels horrible and scratches way too easily.

I used it for about a week before putting on a protector and I liked it. I think I'm sold on protectors though since the screen does get scratched and the protectors don't limit functionality for me. Plus they offer similar oil protection. The anti glare skin actually improves functionality.

Anyway, it's a coating. It will wear off.

The glass underneath is THE SAME GLASS.

We know this, but we can´t use that glass anymore.

When you get scratches, they are in the coating, and will wear off with use.

Wear off with use!!!! Exactly! All these posts are proving my point.

That´s really terrible. I´m afraid to imagine playing Maze Finger (or any other game with heavy use of the touch screen) with the 3GS. I would probably be exchanging the phone once a month, ´cause the coating has started to peel off, because of the games and use.

This oleophobic coating apparently really limits our use of the iPhone and really forces us to baby the phone and be scared to use it or then put these 3rd party screen protectors on (which is ridiculous to put a coating on top of a coating). This was not a problem with the 2G/3G, the glass was robust enough.

Sad really.

We´ll just have to see, what it will be like next year.

Repeat after me: Complaints found online never represent the majority of customers. People who complain online are a minority, those not suffering from screen issues rarely come online to talk about how good the screen is, but those who have issues gladly come online to complain.

Repeat that a good 20-30 times and you should finally understand. Online complaints are a MINORITY.

Someone give this guy an award :D

I love my screen! I had a 1st gen and it is such an upgrade. Less streaky, easier to clean. Keep it.

Yes you are right, BUT...

Does this make the oleophobic coating suddenly stronger material than the orginal glass?

And take away the fact that the oleophobic coatings are peeling off and people are exchanging their phones for new ones because of it.

Perspective. PEOPLE? A handful. HANDFUL (repeat after me HANDFUL)

Gooooooooood!

When there's an actual known issue that transcends more than .5 percent of the iphone 3gs manufactured - let me know

I doubt it's even .5 percent, but I get your point!

No it isn't even close to .5 percent. But at the risk of having people jump on whatever number I chose - I was GENEROUS lol.

I am not sure what percentage a company considers having an issue with a product and whether to have a recall or issue a statement. But I doubt the 3GS will hit that number for the screen coating anytime soon.

No it's not a test. IMO it's the best and my favorite feature of the 3gs. If you can't keep glass nice then maybe you shouldn't buy a 700$ phone.

If you can't work out how to buff off an external coating on a piece of glass then you are beyond help.

so far i have not found my screen to be any more susceptible to scratches than the 3g. If in a years time it gets scratched up due to wear and tear i do have the option of somewhat eliminating the problem depending on the depth of the scratches by removing the coating myself and having a regular 3g like screen.

Most likely those phones with coatings rubbing off are due to the coating not properly bonding to the glass. There are various environmental conditions during manufacture that could cause this but i doubt the number of defects has significantly increased over the 3g model to warrant the scrapping of the oleophobic coating all together.

The people who have worn off some of the oleophobic coating so far are the minority *right now*. If the coating is wearing off this early... who knows what's going to happen in a few more months. Could the *minority* become the *majority* over time? I think those praising the oleophobic coating right now will be wishing they didn't have it when it starts to get scratched or worn off.

I have no problem wiping off the smudges on my screen that are temporary, but I WOULD have a problem with a half-coated, half-bare-glass screen that I can't simply wipe off. Also, to those that are saying "Just wear the rest off and you'll have an iPhone 3G screen"... Are you really going to be able to wear it off evenly? Do you think you'll just start rubbing the other coated areas until you make so many worn patches in your screen until the entire thing is clear again?

You'll see... you'll be sorry that you ever liked the oleophobic coating.

A coating on the screen will never be as strong as the glass below it... and it's not like it's easy to replace like a screen protector. If you have a screen protector... you get scratches in it... so what... just take a piece of tape, peel it off and put on a clear one. Simple and cheap. How do you replace the oleophobic coating?... buy a new glass panel for your iPhone and void your warranty installing it? Which one makes more sense?

No... wait you guys. TheSpaz has a point! A screen protector is your safest and cheapest way to keep your screen looking great!

I hear ya Spaz. Not all of your posts are crazy. He's actually pretty helpful sometimes.

I see what you did there.

Hey Chicken Little. The sky isn't falling.

Your comments are like those who don't have an issue now but want to return their iPhones for something that might happen in the future. You should have quit while you were ahead. "Could the *minority* become the *majority* over time?" Was the last intelligent thing you said in your rant.

But it's nice to know you're so upset about a phone you don't own (anymore).

I didn't say people had to return their iPhones. I said screen protectors will protect them.

Also, I don't have to have an iPhone 3GS to participate in a discussion. My iPhone 3GS had a screen protector on it anyway... I got to feel like naked screen for about an hour after I bought the phone... then a screen protector went right over it.

All you people saying this is wear and tear, you acctually accept wear and tear on a product after a month? That's insane, I guess all if you are very rich.

My plan for the iPhone is to upgrade every two years so if the 2010 iPhone has the coating and it won't last two years, I might not be able to buy it.

Or I have to use a screen protector but I don't like them, so freaking hard to put on.

The Apple store put mine on. Flawlessly

And no one can say/predict/accurately forecast how long the coating will last. No one is saying that one month of usage is acceptable. Follow the thread and you'll see that there are only a few cited cases of people having an issue with their coating. With over 1 million phones in circulation, it's not a problem yet and might NEVER be. I keep using the word - but it doesn't seem to be sinking in with the chicken littles - PERSPECTIVE!

Thus far I like the new coating....I consider myself a power user and am fairly hard on my iPhones...so far (got my 3GS on launch day) the glass is immaculate and FAR better with oil and fingerprints/smudges than my 2G...I am a huge fan of the coating...
