Shouldn't average be 5/10? It got 8/10.

I'm seeing stellar reviews everywhere I look. The verge was the only one, and their main issue was the camera, otherwise it looked like they were happy with it. Here are some choice quotes from what you feel is an average review from the Verge:

"Likely due to some combination of this class-leading hardware and the newly optimized software, the Nexus 5 is just astonishingly fast."

"nine times out of ten, the Nexus 5 feels considerably faster than most devices I’ve used — even the iPhone 5S"

"A killer package... once Google fixes this camera"

"The KitKat update is polished and refined, and cements my belief that not only is Android leading the charge in mobile OSs from a functionality and user interface standpoint, but from a design standpoint as well."

"The battery life, while not perfect, appears to be good enough to get you through a day of work — which is certainly on par with its competition."

"Huge step down from an iPhone 5s"

The Verge review was great and I agree with Josh, KitKat looks awesome. Android is a really solid platform, I just wish fragmentation, skins, and upgradeability weren't such issues, or that the Nexus 5 really delivered on the hardware front. Still, it's a bargain, and I might have to buy one if they ever come back in stock.

I do agree that it is definitely a bargain. And if you don't want to use your upgrade its a solid device.

Google is not a company interested in camera quality. They just make AOSP Android. They dont do the optimization necessary for the camera like the manufacturers do.

Even if the Nexus 5 had a 13 megapixel camera it still wouldn't be that great. Google just makes the AOSP Android and adjust the drivers and stuff, but they dont optimize the camera and never will I think.

The Verge review suggests the battery and camera concerns were valid.

Now I wait and see what the Anandtech review is like.

TheVerge reviewer said it best. It's ironic the Nexus 5 is being advertised for "Everything you need to capture the moments that matter."

I'll even say camera isn't a big deal to me, but if I'm going to stick around with a phone for a couple years I'm going to want one comparable to competitors camera (or one without software issues).

WTF at The Verge review! They gave the camera a FIVE, but last year gave the N4 camera an EIGHT!:eek::confused::confused:

The Verge was like the only one giving them :eek:reviews. Every where else, it was getting good ones.

I think they gave the n5 to someone at the verge who truly does not like it. All of his hands on suggest that too.

I can't speak for anyone else but once I got a good phone camera with the 4S there is no way in hell I'd go back and get a phone with average to poor camera performance. That's a big reason why I would never choose a HTC One over a GS4. The GS4 has a great camera and the HTC camera is merely ok.

The irony being Google just held an event that placed a ton of emphasis on photos and pic taking.

Got here about 45 minutes ago. Needed a 128mb update out of box. After core app updates I had about 26mb left to play around with.

Took the sim card from my note 2 no problem.

Snappy. Playstore updates and downloads where swift. Snappy device. Its square in hand, not a bad thing. Way easier to hold then my slick note 2.

Getting apps installed for normal use, though I an going to hold off unlocking the bootloader and rooting for a bit so I can just focus on using the device. I may or may not root this time around.

Note should you unlock the bootloader you will wipe the device. I am aware of this fact :)

The hands on and review were done by different people. And outside of the camera, looks and battery life, that review was pretty good when speaking of performance.

shouldn't this read "new smartphone" instead?

I think you have no idea what you're talking about

i think i'm just going to root with cf-autoroot and leave the stock recovery. everything i like i get from xposed anyway

Josh at the Verge is an Android user, and praised KitKat and most of the hardware. Just because he didn't perfection in every aspect doesn't make it a bad review. I thought it was very honest and enjoyed the perspective.

Performance - 10/10

Sofware and Display - 9/10

Call Quality, Design, Ecosystem - 8/10

Battery Life - 7/10

Camera - 5/10

After all the sample photos I've seen and reviews from people who have used the camera, I question that camera score.

And the HTC One camera got a 6.

Simple quick pic from my nexus. Shot at the default settings. In other words, I just opened the camera app, touched to focus and pressed the shutter then uploaded to twitter.

Not the best example, I am sure, but still a test shot non the less.

Oh, and I did forget to remove the plastic from the camera lens. LOL

Where's everyone Nexus 5 at?

The latest update I have on mine is that it left Earth City Missouri Saturday afternoon at 3:54 PM.

Used 2 day shipping with ship by 11/8 date.

Mines scheduled for early delivery tomorrow 11/5. :D

Tracking showed originally scheduled for 11/6 delivery. That extra $4 to receive a day earlier is worth it. lol

I'm getting my Nexus 5 today and will be looking at photo performance. I'm on the Nexus 4 right now, so it can't get any worse, only better for me. My wife has the HTC One and many of the pictures just don't look very good. Low light is pretty good in terms of little noise. From what I have seen, the Nexus 5 is better than the HTC One, even in low light.

The iPhone may not be the best of the best in terms of photographs, but it is always up there near the top. It really isn't fair to compare a Nexus device to the pictures from an iPhone, especially since a Nexus is less than half the cost of an iPhone (unlocked versions). There has to be cuts somewhere. And I have seen photo's in both low light and regular light and the Nexus 5 would be considered between "good" and "pretty good" in my eyes. The iPhone 5S, by comparison, gets an "excellent" in my view.

But besides that, and to address your other point, the Google event relating to pictures and uploading them to G+ was for all mobile devices, not just Nexus devices. Google caters to all manufactures.

Didn't really expect any better with only a 2300 mAh battery. They say screen drains battery quicker than they thought which I thought was interesting. Still, battery life on a Nexus phone being short of great is no surprise.

The battery seems better than it was, but not great. Same for the camera...

Either the price and stock android is worth it to you or it is not. It is to me. But, expecting a great battery, camera, AND price, is really not realistic.
