I had no idea the white and black versions have these differences.

They are wrong. Multiple news sites have said this will work on sprint from the play store. They sell the same version that is on google play. Sounds like they are trying to take advantage of people.

wow I had no idea that the white back was soft matte....how soft touch is it though? as much as the black one or equal to the black? I might have to return or trade for the white

Don't know. If someone wants to post some close ups of their white that would be great. We can probably google and find a pic of the black. Maybe both. But from what people say they definitely feel different.

I cannot get over just how much better the headphone amp is on the N5 compared to the N4. The N5 sounds much more like the 2013 N7, which has a fairly decent DAC and amp. The N4 was very muddied, but the N5 is quite listenable. One of my go-to test songs is "It Doesn't Matter" by Alison Kraus & Union Station. The N5 handles the song around 2:08 in a way the N4 just can't. Mind you, it isn't stellar - something like Porcupine Tree's "Lazarus" clearly shows the limitations (the N7 also stumbles on that), but nevertheless, the N5 is quite listenable, whereas, IMO, the N4 wasn't.

There are rumors of maybe getting digital audio out of the USB slot. Being able to plug into a real DAC/amp would be awesome.
Do you have experience with the Note 2 and if so how would you rate the headhone amp on it to that of the N5?
_

On the topic of cases - man would I have a hard time putting a case on the N5. Even though I always put cases on my phones just out of principle. That thing just looks so gorgeous. Even better than a naked iP5s imo, and that'll be the first time I ever say that about a non-iPhone.

Come to think of it, the difficulty of putting a case on the damn thing might be the worst down side to this phone :D Haven't touched one for real yet of course but going by the pics and vids I've seen....it just has that purity of the monolith on 2001 to it.

Its not bad. Not the best but its loud enough

It is that bad. Have you tried speakerphone lol? It seems no matter who is on the other end of the phone call whether it be a cell or land line, speakerphone sucks. However, playing music through spotify is quite a bit better. Even still this is one of the quietest, if not the quietest speakers I have heard. I actually may agree with the "iVerge" review on that aspect. Us fans of Google / Android and the Nexus program have a hard time accepting criticism for the things we love. Hell anyone has a hard time accepting criticism for what you love or want to love.

When compared to the 5S; the Nexus 5 at full volume is equal to the 5S at half.

The speakerphone may be the sole reason for me returning the Nexus 5. I love the screen, the battery seems great especially for a first day charge, and the camera app will be updated. You cannot update or make a speaker quality better, unfortunately.

Give me an HTC One-2 with onscreen buttons and a 5 inch display, normal camera and get rid of the huge bezels.

To me comparing the costs of the Nexus 5 vs the high end units should not count as an excuse we have to make as consumers. "Oh it only cost 350 or 399, I should expect to have a *****ty speakerphone, or possibly poor camera performance." The phones components may very well be similar in price to the HTC One or S4, Google just chooses to make much less profit because they don't need to make most of their revenue from selling cellular devices.

The iPhone 5S is $199 to make. Apple chooses to sell them for $649. If Apple can make a great phone for $199 then so should Google and LG be able to.

Even if the Nexus 5 cost $199 to make or perhaps $250, or $275 an extra $75 above the cost of the iPhone for a huge company such as LG should be plenty to spare to make THE HIGHEST quality phone out there.

The S4 cost $237 to build, for example and arguably has certain higher quality components such as the 13MP camera, and 2600mAh battery and an equivalent screen size of 5 inches. I could not find the HTC One cost to build.

If Google is really all about getting 4.4 and android into the next billion customers, they should make the highest quality phones and perhaps think about selling them at or near cost to build and make profit from the play store instead.

Unfortunately the only thing for me that is better specifically about the Nexus 5 over the iPhone is the screen (not comparing OS's). Man is it gorgeous. And when that's the only thing that is better, I am disappointed to say but it is going back. And no, the additional retail price of the iPhone is not a relevant argument as explained above as it is likely that they have a somewhat similar cost to build.

I cannot wait for that soft matte black finish. So tired of this POS plastic on the S4, and I'm sick of the Amoled screen

What's so bad about the AMOLED screen?

I've got a few nexus niggles at the moment. For example:

- How can I have message notifications on the lock screen?

- Can I set it so the screen comes on when I receive a message?

- Getting annoyed that the menu button is always in a different place from app to app.

- Very much missing the Samsung calendar widget. On the Google one it just shows blocks of colour rather than text.

- battery life is excellent so far (ok, that on isn't a niggle)

- Where is the silent/vibrate button?

- Where is the instruction manual?

Sorry I know your main gripe is the speakerphone but you're completely wrong regarding the music volume.

The Nexus 5 speaker isn't amazing clarity wise, merely decent - but volume? It's VERY loud compared to the iPhone!

Much louder.

Made in Korea

Thanks

I'm sorry but price IS relevant. For $649 or $749, apple should have included a larger screen, notification led, built in wireless charging, NFC, more memory, etc, etc..

Even if cost to build is similar, it's ridiculous to give apple a free pass for marking up their phones that much but be extra critical of Google for providing a phone that's almost half the price that's also unlocked and contract free.

Much louder.

I have both in front of me. Playing JT's new single TKO, the nexus 5 maxed out at 82db. The iPhone 5s maxed out at 90db. It is a big difference, and the quality is also much better on the iPhone. :/

8db louder may not sound like a lot, but it is substantial:

Telephone dial tone 80dB
City Traffic (inside car) 85dB
Train whistle at 500', Truck Traffic 90dB
Jackhammer at 50' 95dB
Subway train at 200' 95dB
Level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss 90 - 95dB

Perceptions of Increases in Decibel Level
Imperceptible Change 1dB
Barely Perceptible Change 3dB
Clearly Noticeable Change 5dB
About Twice as Loud 10dB - which is about what I noticed. Nexus 5 being half as loud.
About Four Times as Loud 20dB

Wait, I'm doing the same but with an N5 and iPhone 5 - not 5S.

Is there a massive difference between the 5 and 5S speakers?

My experience is not correlating with yours in terms of volume level... The Nexus 5 is deafening!!

The audio clarity is much better on the iPhone but volume wise the Nexus is most definitely higher.

Either my Nexus speaker is defective or the iPhone 5s is substantially louder than the 5 lol. :(

The version destined to France apparently has headphones.

For some of these things you need 3rd party apps. There are other sms apps that will turn on the screen (go sms/handcent etc). There are other lockscreen apps that will put anything you want on the lockscreen.

re the calendar widget - the stock android calendar widget shows event details. Not sure what's going on with yours.

You can mute/vibrate but setting the volume all the way down, or stick a widget on one of the homescreens as well. (this is not an iphone so there is now dedicated hardware button). You should also look at an app called shush - when you set the volume to off it displays a nice popup where you can select how long you want it to stay on silent. Nice for meetings etc.

Manual? - This is Android. Real men don't need manuals :)

Mine went out for delivery in the 4am hour, so I guess it'll be on my front door by the time I get home. It's a shame I have to run a bunch of errands this afternoon (including getting a new SIM! :D) or I'd be able to play around with it more this evening.

Haha I actually appreciate this. Google changed my shipping time from 3-4 weeks to 2-3 weeks. I'll take that. They must be catching up at least a little.

Thanks

Cost to build vs msrp.

Let's see Samsung cost to build is about the same as Apple. At around $230.

But Samsung sold S3 at msrp for $550 at ATT stores in 2012.

Now this year S4 msrp is $629?

So who's jacking up prices?

I used speaker phone all last night and the volume was fine...and I did not even have it all the way up. Oh and I unplugged my phone at 6:00am this morning and it is still at 95%....usually I would be at 85% with the n4

That's bad news indeed, speaker volume is very important to me. I know on my G2 the speaker was terrible, there is a file you can text edit if you are rooted and change the values for any volume such as speaker, earpiece, etc. I bumped that up and the speaker was very acceptable, but still not as nice as the iphones though. I'm assuming the same hack can be done on the N5.
