That's pretty much because it's not the norm, to have a phone that you can take to every major carrier (except Verizon). It's pretty awesome though, because that means that you can use it on Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, any of the GSM MVNO's (H2O, Simple Mobile, Aio, etc), and Metro PCS.

I think the iPhone 5 and later is another one of the few like that.

Went into BBY and asked if I could buy one off contract.....they wouldn't sell it to me unless they activated it in store....so no dice since I don't have Sprint service.

My N5 is set to leave the warehouse by 11/26/13 - I can do until then. Means I should have mine at or just after Thanksgiving, which will be a nice little gift!

That is the stupidest thing I have heard. I just don't get this.

Ya I left shaking my head - but given I was only wanting to buy it and return it in a few weeks, its not a huge deal.

It just is so stupid. If you want to buy a phone unlocked that is your phone. You should be able to activate it how ever you see fit.

Anybody else noticing how awful the Nexus 5 is at focusing? Too often, it either straight up doesn't focus correctly (despite me tapping where I want to be in focus) or it just takes forever. My girlfriends iPhone 5 can snap pictures extremely quickly. This phone can take up to 2 seconds!

It's because when they sell a phone outright, they make ZERO money from that. So they have no incentive to sell the phone without an activation. Yeah it sucks but that's life.

Really? I thought the carriers were the ones making the money off activations. Not BB. There has to be money in off contract phones for BB or they would not sell them. I believe smartphones have markups just like everything else. The N5 is already marked up from $349 to $449.

Couple alternatives for you:

1. Moto X camera port apk: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515957

or

2. This mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516061

I haven't tried either, since camera functionality isn't high priority for me. Just thought I would point them out to you.

BB makes the $100 premium they charge for the phone at the very least. Millions of salespeople around the world sell items and don't make commission off of those sales, it's too bad BB phone salesmen do. BB should step in and enforce it's policy which says you can buy the phone contract free, or change its policy to say you can't.

I wonder if you called their corporate office while you were in store what would have happened.

My order said that I had to wait till Dec. I broke down today and canceled my order and picked it up at my local Bell store. They threw in a case(25$)and screen protector(20$). So in the end it was 55$ extra than my Google play order. No more waiting or dealing with UPS for shipping is worth the 55$ to me.

i see bell has the nexus 5 off contract for $500 + tax - but it doesnt specify size. is that for the 32gb? if it's for the 16gb that's $150 over play store, no?

My Spigen Slim Armor case finally arrived. Initial impression after putting it on is it feels amazing. The Nexus 5 is thin and light and this case gives it just enough weight and size to make it feel great in the hand.

It's a two piece case. The inner piece is a TPU material that is flexible but firm. It's a little thicker around the edges and looks like it would provide great protection against drops. The second piece is a hard polycarbonate shell that that has a nice matte finish to it, similar to the phone itself. Nice lip around the front of the screen to lay face down and the back has plenty of protection around the camera lens. Buttons are covered and have a nice solid click when pressed.

Also works perfectly with the the Nokia wireless charging plate that I picked up the other day. The case has enough gripiness to it that it clings to the charger so no worrying about it falling or sliding off.

Don't have any pictures at the moment but borrowing a couple photos from another member over at XDA. The case I picked up is all black.

So the speaker phone on the nexus 5 is low?

The nexus 4 speakers were kind of low. But not super low like the Galaxy nexus which had awful speakers.

On stock the galaxy nexus was really quiet but on CM9/CM10.0/1/2 the volume is so much better. (very loud) I think google may have even tweaked it in the stock updates as well, but my phone has been running custom since I pretty much got it. So there is still hope that the nexus 5 can be tweaked in software/kernel.

So it is supposed to be there? And anyone else have a tiny bit of screen bleed in the corners?

The shadowing is supposed to be there from what I can tell. You can see it on the home screens as well as google now. It's definitely not a hardware defect since screenshots capture the shadowing in the pics as well.

The only app that I know of that has immersive mode currently is google play books and the shadowing does not show there. So the shadowing is optional per app I would guess or only occurs on the homescreens and google now.

Does anyone know if the rear-camera lens scratches easily? Or, is it supposed to be the 'scratch-proof' sapphire like the iPhone 5/5S? I usually like having my phones go naked, but my iPhone camera lens is scratched to hell.

I haven't had "a ton" of apps crashing, but I have had about two of them do so. That being said, it's kind of to be expected. This happens at the beginning of every new OS release. If you get on the cutting edge of an operating system release, you have to expect that there may possibly be compatibility issues with apps that haven't been updated for the new OS version.

Well said. I'm getting crashes all the time on ios7 on iPhone 5

I hate when they do this. If you really wanted it I bet you could have gotten the manager or something. It clearly says on their website what the price off contract is so that means you can buy it that way.

For those asking google has confirmed they are working on software fixes for the camera and the speaker issues. I don't have links at the moment but the camera was confirmed to the verge and the speaker was confirmed to android central.

The reviews on amazon were saying it is too tight on the home button. Have you found this problem?

I have the option to buy a galaxy S4 brand new for the same price as a N5. Would I be better to go with the s4 or N5?

Depends on if you want a pure Google device or want to deal with Touchwiz and/or rooting to put a custom ROM on it?

Do you want an IPS or AMOLED screen? Do you want a removable battery and additional storage or not?

I think these are questions only you can answer.
