For anyone who wants the Sense UI, here's the link.

Rooting is just like jailbreaking. You can read up on it, if you like. I will be doing this tomorrow. I like experimenting. Lol. The reason I am going to root my N1 is because I want to change the color of the trackball. Lol. I know that's lame, but I want my trackball notification light to be red.

I bought a Nexus One a few days ago. I really like the screen, and for the past couple of days I was convinced that I'd keep the phone. I also thoroughly enjoyed the flash light widgets that turn on the camera flash instead of displaying a white screen. Then I woke up this morning, checked my phone and wasn't all excited to see the 800x480 display anymore.

The novelty of 800x480 AMOLED had worn off.
How is it a novelty? It's an amazing display however you slice it. There are still like double the pixels as the iphone. I can't stand to look at my 3gs anymore.

I was stuck with ugly, clunky apps, no silent switch, bad speaker placement and no Tweetie 2. No good games, no smooth scrolling and a maps application that displays ugly, Fischer Price looking map tiles.

Some apps are ugly, so are iphone apps. At least you can install from wherever you like. I do miss the silent switch, but at least it is on the lock screen. The speaker placement is fine.

Maps is definitely just a good on this phone as the iPhone, i'd say it's far better due to the lovely large display.

I was foolish for even thinking that it might have been a contender to my 32GB iPhone 3GS. Now I get to sell it on Craigslist at a $60 loss because you can't un-hack it. You can flash with a stock ROM but there's no way to re-lock the bootloader on these.

Probably going to buy an iPad with this money instead. That is something with which I know I will not be disappointed.
It is of course, you opinion you are entitled to. I loved my GS for a long time and owned every iphone they released. I'm sick of being locked in and locked down. I'm loving android more and more.

Just got my Nexus One day today, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

it is better in pretty much every single way possible.

The hardware not counting the crappy touch screen and the fact that it's not compatible with dock connectors and is lacking a silent switch and doesn't have much internal storage space, yes, the hardware is better in every measurable sense.

The software on the other hand is awful. The home screen is pretty cool, but every single application in the Android Market is ugly and clunky. Most of the "thousands of apps" are just awful sound boards with ads in them, disgustingly ugly themes, or terrible quality ringtones.

The software is unusable. It's that bad. Give it a couple of days, you'll get over the fact that the screen and the hardware is absolutely awesome and all you'll be left with is terrible software and a bad case of buyer's remorse.

I'm about to leave so I can sell this heap of junk to someone on craigslist. I hope the 4th generation iPhone has this kind of screen, but if it doesn't - oh well. At least we know it will have great software.

Yeah, the display is very nice. I got over the fact that it was nice in a couple of days and was used to it.

I don't know about you, but when I'm trying to watch a YouTube video and the speaker playing the sound is on the complete opposite side of my device and projecting the sound in the opposite direction, that's bad. Yeah, the iPhone isn't perfect either, but 90º off is better than 180º off.

Please refer to this post I made on Twitter to gain a sense of what I'm talking about not liking. http://twitter.com/tedroddy/status/10816440506

They give you a much higher resolution display - but it doesn't use it any good way other that being able to read completely zoomed out websites!

It is of course, you opinion you are entitled to. I loved my GS for a long time and owned every iphone they released. I'm sick of being locked in and locked down. I'm loving android more and more.

Yeah, it kind of sucks how "locked down" the iPhone is - but at least there are actually good apps to use on it! Sure, you can install apks from inside the browser of an Android device ... but there's nothing good to install anyway!

By all means, use and like your Nexus One - I'm not anti-competition. I just don't like it at all and wish I'd never bought it. Now I have to take a loss and sell it on craigslist. Oh well, you live you learn. I'll never buy another phone that's not an iPhone.

They just need to stop with the constant fragmentation if they want to remain successful in the long run, it's getting borderline ridiculous.

Actually, it is exactly what Google wants. They aren't trying to create a single experience that has the same exact look and feel across every phone. At the end of the day, 99.99% of users don't care if different Android phones have different software versions. They will just use whatever is on the phone. So far, there hasn't been as much app incompatibility as people claimed would happen. Similar to the iPad SDK, Android has spent a lot of time developing a SDK that will work on different hardware.

Yeah, the display is very nice. I got over the fact that it was nice in a couple of days and was used to it.

I don't believe I can comprehend this one. Thats like saying "the iphone UI is nice, but i got over it". It's a nice feature, and the main feature you interact with every single time the phone is used. It's a huge plus.

See, I installed swype the other day. A complete replacement of the keyboard on screen. It's brilliant that I"m able to completely replace the keyboard. I missed having that type of freedom.

And to be fair, there is just as much junk on the app store. All those stupid games that are free where you can buy points and the obligatory fart/flashlight apps. There are some brilliant iphone apps though, I can't argue that.

Anyone, enjoy your iphone! :)

I think of it more like a window with a view. If the view's bad, then what good is the window? The display is great, but what it's displaying sucks. So what good is the display?

My 1 day old Nexus One is boxed up and ready for Fed-Ex pickup.

Here are my 3 main reasons for returning it (in order of importance):

1) Lack of native exchange calendar support

2) Touchscreen: I found myself needing to hit the back key several times to get it to respond. Also the bottom row of QWERTY keys must be pressed at the top of each key, not center. The other QWERTY keys work fine by pressing them in the center.

3) Display in the sunlight is almost impossible to read.

This phone does have potential, however it functions more like a prototype (beta) than it really should... considering $500+

In a weird way, I'm excited to be using my 3GS again. It doesn't have any of the above issues.

I don't exactly have small fingers and have not had any problems with the keyboard whatsoever.

The argument about Apps is a little silly, new apps are being developed all the time.

Maybe its because I am really a Linux guy at heart but there is a lot to love about Android.

Feels 100% solid to me, I have not had any of the problems other people said they had with the touch sensitive buttons on the bottom of the phone, mine work perfect.

Edit: Stop expecting an iPhone, its not an iPhone. Sure it incorporates some similar features but thats about it. It is not meant to be the iPhone in any serious way. I think most of the people complaining want the iPhone 4g and are just impatient so they buy the Nexus One.

I think people are itching for something new, heard that the N1 now supports at&t bands, and went to Android expecting an experience that's comparable but not the same as the iPhone and finding that it's not even comparable.

Well personally I prefer my Nexus One over the 3Gs any day of the week.

All this nonsense about one being better than the other, its all non sense.

Yes the hardware is better on the Nexus One, but that's a given since its a much newer phone.

They are different, if you are total Apple addict (which frankly is just sad IMO) than you will probably find yourself pining for an iPhone. Personally I could give two flying ***** about Apple. I bought an iMac because it fit my needs and I have been using Linux, OSX and Windows for over a decade. I prefer Linux over both, but find I need photoshop / lightroom (or Aperture) for my photography stuff.

Especially people with a 3G! I want something faster! And there is no way I'm buying an iPhone if it can't be jailbroken. So that means I try to find an old 3Gs on ebay from someone who's not ripping me off, or I get a different phone.

No matter what, the N1 is better than a locked down 3Gs or an old 3G in my opinion.

This right here is what kills it for me. I've read too many stories and blog posts about exchange activesync just not working "right". Calendars get messed up, you need to buy an app to get it to work, sometimes it works -- sometimes not.

Doesn't seem very "Smart" to me...

Some people aren't giving the Nexus One a chance. They are looking for it to be the perfect phone when it isn't. Having the phone for three days is not enough time to get used to a totally different experience. When I first got the first generation iPhone, I took it back twice, within days, because I wasn't sure if I liked it. After giving it time, I loved it. Most people opinions on here are purely subjective.

I don't understand why people complain about Apps when new apps are being developed everyday. Its clear that the App Store is superior to the Android Market, but the AM is only getting better by the day. Apple App Store didn't get where it was overnight.

Anyway, to each its own. Not everyone likes the iPhone, so I highly doubt everyone will like N1. I'm rocking with the N1. A front facing camera will convert me back to the 4th Generation iPhone, if it doesn't happen, then I'm sticking with Android.

Yea! And on the iPhone we had to wait a year for it! And 2 years for Copy and paste! What's with these "smart" phones! :p

I really doubt exchange will be built into Android. Microsoft owns Exchange and ActiveSync. It's propriety code and cannot be built into an Open Source OS. The only way to have it is for a third party application to add the support.

If that solution doesn't work for you then stick with your iPhone or get a Blackberry. I'm not naive enough to say that a Nexus One is going to be the best phone for everyone.

The Nexus One will literally run circles around the iPhone 3GS - in any task thrown at it. Besides the far superior hardware specs, the openness of the Android platform in comparison to Apple's platform allows developers to create applications with far more functionality. This comparison is between both devices, out of the box, no jailbreaking required. Sure, some of the apps right now might be a little 1.0ish, but in 3-4 months time frame, there's going to be big changes.

However, if you jailbreak the iPhone, it still falls behind, and will fall on it's face when pushed. Have you ever actually tried multitasking on a jailbroken 3G or 3GS? They begin to bog down and run horribly slow once you have more than 2-3 apps open.

This has all been proven, and Apple has acknowledged it. In fact, they're actually threatened, and this is why they've created a lawsuit against HTC. (one of the most popular manufacturers for Android devices)

So there's no surprise a new to the market phone, out performs a 10 month old phone.

I'm awaiting the reversal when we have the iPhone 4G vs Nexus One threads. :D

But seriously, just pick which phone suits you best. Who cares if anyone else likes using it? I find it quite glitchy (if that's the correct word) to use compared to my 3GS (especially when typing). So I won't be getting one. Doesn't mean it's a bad phone, just means it isn't for me.

My friend who owns it, thinks it's much better than his iPhone, and that's great for him that he's happy.

Multitasking on a 3GS is flawless. I've had 13 apps open in the background and my 3GS was still working fine. Now, the 3G iPhone can't handle that much without slowing down. Now, that's one thing I can say about the 3GS - it's not slow. Multitasking should have definitely been on this phone, but battery life would have been even worse though.

There won't be a comparison because HTC comes out with a new N1 every two months. The HTC Desire is the new N1. It's the exact same N1 with improved specs. It's going to be the new flagship phone.

It went from Droid to Nexus One to HTC Desire.

This is exactly it. My 3G is feeling very old at this point. It's tempting to get a 3GS now even though I know a new iPhone could potentially be around the corner.

It is built into Android. Exchange mail and exchange contacts work; just not calendar.

Actually, yes.

How? Every source I've seen says that this is not the case. At least without a 3rd party app. Can anyone else with a 3Gs confirm?

Also, not the case as far as I can tell. You either need to flash a ROM with it in or the carrier does that in their special ROM or you download a 3rd party app.
