Then I stop and think about the lack of apps that suit my needs and I realize I'm where I belong.
With over 30,000 apps, I'm thinking that for my needs, I shouldn't have any problems.

The music app will make you miss the iPhone ;)
That's what I'm afraid of. When I commute each morning, I listen to music. When I'm at the office, I listen as well, though I can now use pandora and let that work in the background.

Overall, my concerns are generally about app availability to a small degree, ease of use with my music and as noted in my post emails. While I can access my company's email, having three different email apps is a bit awkward.

With over 30,000 apps, I'm thinking that for my needs, I shouldn't have any problems.

Exactly what I thought. Different tune altogether when I couldn't find something that offered what I need.

A todo app with categories that offers recurring tasks that let you choose on which days those tasks repeat and an account balance app that allows categories with seperate totals for each. I would pay good money for both of these.

I hope a capable developer happens upon this thread.

I think I need to stay away from this thread. I'm going to end up buying another one.

I'm here to say that... After three weeks, I returned my Nexus One.

There a couple of reasons.
-Battery Life: Even with Advanced task killer, my battery life was pretty bad.
-Touch screen: no one makes a touch screen like Apple. The nexus one screen just wasn't as accurate and would often mistake the palm of my hand(near the search button) for a finger.
-The keyboard: God I missed my iPhone keyboard.
-Lack of certain apps. I missed a few apps from my iPhone like flickr, starbucks, delivery status to name a few.

Nexus one is a great "start" for google but the hardware needs to get a little better and so does the software. I realize android has come a long way but it's just not primetime enough for me.

Let me just say that returning the phone was a breeze. Called up HTC. Filed the return. Got my next day air shipping label emailed to me. And in less than 24 hours from when I made the phone call, the phone was in HTC's hands. Now all I have to do is wait while they make sure the phone is in good condition and I returned all original accessories before they refund me.

Anyone with a Nexus One found an App that can run divx/xvid/h.264/mpeg4 etc. videos without a lot of conversions and hassle?

just more BS you cant return the nexus to HTC.its googles phone must return where you bought it and thats from google not HTC. they do make it thats it so please spare us the BS
You're wrong.

Not that you can rely on their information, but my father was in an AT&T store yesterday and a rep told him they are working on offering a subsidized deal (ala T-Mobile) with the Nexus One.

I really want to believe this, but apparently the rep also went on talking about new iphone features this summer, which I know she is just guessing on.....so if she was willing to spout out that info, maybe her N1 info is just as bunk...

I love my N1 but am debating on returning it. The big deal for me is the screen issues I regularly encounter:

- Touch screen misregisters button presses. These can be a half inch off to 2 inches. Usually happens when pressing something in the bottom 1/3rd of the screen. Putting phone to sleep then waking it resolves the issue. Theories of the cause run from inferior hardware to a firmware bug. Over 2000 posts in the google support forum for this issue.
- Keyboard - inferior to the iPhone. This isn't even close. Tried multiple keyboards and everyone I've tried has a noticeable lag. I hear these issues can be resolved by rooting the phone, but I don't want to lose my warranty. Put a laggy keyboard in combined with the touch screen misregistering button presses and life really slows down.

The battery life on my N1 has been better than my 3G3. I found a package tracking software app on Android that blows away delivery status. Also, seemed to be more free apps on Android than on the iphone.

These screen issues really have me on the fence. I have 2 days left to decide - keep or send back. Decisions, decisions....

I've looked at the Nexus One, it looks nice on paper (it's got the same power as my friggin' NETBOOK), but Android still needs work, and it looks like the hardware on this phone does as well.
I agree in the software, disagree with the hardware.

I'm blown away at the the hardware of the N1.

The software on the other hand does not have the polish that apple is known for. I'm not sure if future revisions will change that. For instance, to copy and paste on the iPhone, I need to touch some text for a second or two on the iPhone and then select what I want to cut/copy. Pasting is similar, holding down on an area to paste.

On the Nexus I need to hit the menu softbutton and hit select/copy paste. Not very fluid in the experience. Controls are not as polished as well. Setting the alarm on the iPhone required repeatedly hitting an up arrow to cycle through the time instead of spinning a wheel with the time.

Over all as I use the N1, I miss more of what's so easy on the iPhone. Jessica said it best in that the iPhone just works and thats that great thing about apple products

Those of you wondering if you should root it and run a custom rom, do it.

I switched from a 3GS to the nexus. I was blown away by the nexus at first, but then the various bugs and performance problems made me consider switching back.

But then I rooted and tried both the sense rom and cyanogenmod. Both are so much better than the stock android, and really make the phone look and feel the way you would expect from a top-of-the-line android device.

In my opinion, a rooted nexus has the 3GS beat, but a non-rooted nexus does not. The stock android that google installs on it is okay, but really is not representative of what the phone is capable of.
...snip...

so between the 2 ROMs, which did you like better or prefer? or are using now?

Return and repurchase once and if the issues are fixed.

Have you tried Smart Keyboard? It's the only one I've found that's worth using. Swype is also just as good as everyone says (once you get used to it), but you have to go hunting around to find a copy right now.

HTC IME is the best keyboard.

For the C&P similar to the iPhone, you will need Sense UI. The standard Android 2.1 C&P is not as good as Sense UI. Sense UI is way better.

I prefer Sense UI. But bluetooth isn't working on Sense UI, yet. I typically go back and forth, but with Sense UI, you have the option of going in the settings and changing it to the standard UI (which would look stock). Sense UI has the best widgets, best keyboard, best C&P implementation...pretty much the best everything compared to the stock.

A rooted N1 is better than a jailbroken 3GS. I like Apple more than Google and I've had all three iPhones, but a rooted N1 - you can pretty much do "everything." All of the downfalls of a N1 are obsolete when you root it, except for a few that can't be change.

Ok guys, count me in amongst the iPhone owners who bought a Nexus One and then returned it.

Yeah its only been two days and while I'll admit that my experience would only improve as I continue to use it. I found some glaring issues, that were not satisfactory and would not likely change over time.

Firstly the good:
As I mentioned, the screen is gorgeous, the accuracy of it wasn't as bad as reported. The performance was good and the notification system was excellent. Other positives included the home screens, the live wallpaper, etc.

The the bad:
as I mentioned in an earlier post. The email clients leave a lot to be desired of. The functionality and interaction of the apps are sub par to what I have for the mail app on the iPhone. I need a separate mail app just to handle my work email. The cut/paste implementation is rather poor in my opinion, I got used to apple's very elegant implementation. The organization of the setting and controls are a bit awkward. This final point wouldn't really be an issue as I continue to use it and get used to it. Music player - I've been spoiled with the iPod app. Between iTunes and the iPod app, everything just pales in comparison. I use my iPhone to listen to music a lot so for me this is a huge deal.

So in the end, I couldn't justify spending the $$ (even though I'd sell my iphone to offset the cost) on a phone that actually seems to do less in the areas that I need it. Yeah it does more in other areas but those are not the functions that are important to me. In the end, the iPhone just works and works well.

I called Google/HTC, got the RMA process going and it will be heading out to fedex tomorrow. I feel bad in one sense because I really wanted this to work.

Live and learn, I'm off now to drink the apple kool-aid and be assimilated into the iborg collective :p

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Good luck with the RMA maflynn! I've heard some bad things with returns but hopefully they'll process yours quickly.

Looking at the varying thoughts on the Nexus One it isn't for everyone and no one should bash you for not liking it. If you love either platform, you can have a great smartphone experience but at the end of the day it's all down to your personal taste! :)

You came, you saw, you didn't like! :p

Thanks, I gave it an honest shot.

I'm not terribly worried about the RMA process. I'm not expecting to see the credit appear on my credit card for 3+weeks. They already told me it will take 14 days after receiving it.

I mentioned something to my gf last night about switching between the two phones (letting her use my 3GS and getting some more Nexus time for me) and her response was something to the tune of "... when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.".

This is someone coming from a first gen iPhone. FYI.

LOL HAHAHA! Thats what you get for giving up such a fine device and then "wanting" it back haha! I wish you luck though:p

Nah. I was halfway kidding with her because I know how much she likes it.

My plan is to wait until the new iPhone is released and if it's not up to my not-all-that-high standards, I'll be getting the top rated AT&T Android device at that time.

Did they give you a full refund?

Yes, that is what I am currently using. When I bought it a week ago it was very laggy. However the developer has put out a couple of updates since then and much of the lag is gone. I had been also trying out Swiftkey. While I liked it, it had it's problems with word selection and was much slower than Smart Keyboard.

Have you tried Smart Keyboard? It's the only one I've found that's worth using. Swype is also just as good as everyone says (once you get used to it), but you have to go hunting around to find a copy right now.

for what it's worth, I'm still having occasional moments where I'm wishing I had a nexus one. Despite the horrible experience I had with the device malfunctioning, I really, really liked the (free) cloud features, voice to text, etc.

Also, as a company, Google has really been doing some admirable things like:

* taking a stand agianst Chinese censorship (and espionage if you want to take a more cynical approach)
* making big pushes in wireless and internet access policies towards consumers
* launching innovative ocean - related products that have no revenue generating ability but do increase awareness of environmental issues
* launching bike maps
*pushing an open net (and smartphone industry)

etc. etc.

So even after all this difficulty i went through with my first Nexus One, I still want to give them a chance. I might just take the plunge a second time and hope my device functions correctly.....
