I think we have to wait to get more information about the camera. thisismynext.com published a few snapshots made by GN and iPhone 4S. There are cases where GN camera clearly has an advantage:

iPhone 4S

Galaxy Nexus:

But clearly we can not judge much based on such a limited sample.
I would question if they even focused on the individuals face in the 4S photo. Otherwise the buildings wouldn't have been so clear...

This is entirely to do with where the metering is. If the iPhone shot had been taken properly, that is, if they had tap/locked on the person, the metering would have been set for the person, and the shots would look the same. Instead, the iPhone used a balanced metering for the whole scene, which is typically what one wants with an 'auto' setting. One just needs to actually realize when the metering makes an incorrect assumption.

Could of been focused on the person but my guess is any basic photo editing software like Google Picasa could make the iPhone photo look a lot like the Galaxy Nexus. All that would need to be adjusted is the white balance and chances are it would be just fine.

They always get the top Android devices? All carriers have the Galaxy S 2; before now Sprint and Tmobile got the Nexus S; Tmobile got the sensation and Sprint got the Evo.

AT&T has probably te weakest overall lineup of exclusives, but they had the only iPhone so there's the reasoning for that.

Yeah being on AT&T and liking Android sucks. For the most part it gets crap. It was in the past year or so they even started offering good Android phones and that was just because the iPhone was going to Verizon and they finally figured out Android is popular. Started with the Galaxy S (Captivate) and then they start announcing stuff in early 2011 but still it took them a while to start bring stuff out. It would be nice if they would keep bring out good stuff. Verizon seems to be getting the most Android phones I like.

Kind of ironic that we could have a situation where the iPhone has better hardware than the Android phone, but a worse OS and feature set.

The only areas were the iPhone has better hardware than the Galaxy Nexus is in the Camera. Everything else hardware wise goes to the Nexus.

Then SGX 540 GPU in the Galaxy Nexus is weaker as well. The fact that it has the same GPU as the Nexus S and a weaker GPU than the Mali 400 in the GSII is a letdown for me.

I was disappointed by this at first, but I think the reason they did that was for the battery life and overall "user experience" (term stolen from Apple fans). Probably the same reason why they underclocked the CPU at 1.2 GHz when it can go up to 1.5 GHz.

After seeing all the threads on how poor the battery life on the 4S is, it seems that, for once, Google and Samsung have given more concern to the "user experience" than Apple. But we'll have to wait for more testing to find out for sure.

Right now, based on the video demos already floating around, it looks like the Nexus is pretty capable even with the older GPU. And, let's face it, the majority of users are going to use their phones for less intensive GPU apps, like angry birds and cut the rope, anyways. :D

Based on benchmarks, the GPU in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 (they're the same) completely destroys the SGX 540 GPU in the Galaxy Nexus. Pretty important piece of hardware, so I'd say the iPhone 4S outpowers the Nexus in that respect. But it'll depend on what you do with your phone. And the 4S' battery-life and user-experience seems to be paying the price for all that power.

The one saving grace is that I'm hoping that ICS's GPU acceleration is really optimised for the SGX540 (and judging by the videos it is) meaning my Nexus S could benefit from the update so it's not all bad. :D

Is there any other major things a high end GPU in a phone is needed for other than games? I can never see myself doing any serious gaming on a phone. Any games i like on the phones are the simple ones.

The Galaxy Nexus annoucement did not "WOW" me as i have heard all the specs leading up to the announcement over the last few weeks. But I am liking the interface a lot with ICS.

I am just tired of the iOS i guess after 4yrs I guess. That combined with the same puny screen there is just no way i can stay any longer. The iphone is a solid product no doubt but I'll take a larger screen size and an OS that has more problems over iOS.

It basically just comes down to email, web browsing, pictures and phone calls for me. The gaming does not interest me on the phones.

I don't know what you consider random reboots, defective GPS, or intermittent "this page cannot be displayed" despite full bars of service

I guess maybe compared to a brick my Samsung Galaxy S has good build quality. Last samsung product I'll ever buy... their strategy is to make so many types of phones consumers get confused and forget they are buying a Samsung product.

Yup, exactly.

Exactly my thoughts. True the A5 has a much better GPU, but its power will hardly be utilized unless you want to play something like Battlefield 3 on your phone (if that will ever exist).
The GPU in the Nexus is more than enough to accelerate 2D animations, that's all that matters for an iPhone user.

Don't use my SGS2 for gaming so the weaker GPu won't make the slightest bit of difference to me,rather have ICS,16gb is plenty, music i listen to,a few pics and my favourite photos, a great camera that suits the amount of pics i take ...maybe 10 a month,if i go away i use my canon ixus 1000(no phone can compete),the design of the nexus is thin, sleek, and a brilliant screen..all in all everything the iPhone should be...

I was impressed with ICS, cancelled my ordered for the 4s and will get the Galaxy Nexus.
I do not care about the latest GPU, all I care is a smooth experience.
Now I wait .......... :D

I'm afraid I totally agree. One of iPhone 4S's best marketing point was the photo taking speed. Galaxy Nexus is almost twice as fast.

I know that I like to point out Apple's flaws, but one thing Apple is known for is sparing no expense on using awesome GPU's in their phones.

This is the reason why the iPads (and up until about 6 months ago) the iPhones had a noticeably better experience when scrolling around wep pages or loading different menus and screens.

I don't know why some people are having 4S battery issues, but it shouldn't come as a surprise that the iPhone has a hoss GPU in it. That (and hardware acceleration) are what deliver the 'smooth' experience that iFans like so much.

Nexus Prime is smooth. I'm pretty sure iFans will like it.

What carrier/carriers in the US is the galaxy nexus coming to??

No one is talking. There are probably still negotiations going on as to who gets it and when.

The rumor is that Verizon is trying to get some kind of timed exclusivity.

This would be a bad idea from Samsung/Google's standpoint because there is more hype behind the Galaxy Nexus than any other Android phone ever (except for maybe the Galaxy SII).

Going multi-carrier would be their best bet for putting a dent in the stranglehold that the iPhone has on Apple-fans since the current model is seen as a weak upgrade.
