lol at computer nerds not knowing about the sneaker head world.

I don’t think it has anything to do with ‘Not knowing’, it’s just You have those who simply don’t care to know anything about shoes that ‘self-adjust’. I mean, if you think about a total niche category, this Nike shoe would fit that profile very easily for the majority, especially when it needs to be controlled by a smart phone.

A solution to a problem that doesn't exist!
This is tech for the sake of tech in my opinion.

"I'll meet you there, I need to charge my shoes first"

Yup. The iOS7 and Yosemite of basketball shoes.

people now too lazy to tie their shoes and will need their phone........smh

Not trying to be an old fart but I tend to like more and more analog things. This all over the place tech mentality doesn’t entice me so much. There are certain things that should stay analog forever. Adding tech just complicate things and create unnecessary problems.
I also love the fact some analog things can last forever and preserve the environment. I don’t like the idea of replacing some products just because their tech is outdated.

Nike today introduced new iPhone-controlled self-adjusting basketball shoes based on its latest FitAdapt technology.

The new Nike Adapt BB shoes feature an advanced power-lacing system with a custom motor that senses the tension needed by the foot and adjusts accordingly to ensure a snug fit. Using buttons on the shoe or the Nike Adapt app for smartphones, basketball players can adjust the fit on the fly during a game.

For example, during a timeout, a player can loosen the shoe before tightening it up as they re-enter the game. In a forthcoming feature, Nike says players will also be able to prescribe a different tightness setting for warm-ups.

The shoes are equipped with a 505 mAh battery that can last between 10 and 20 days and charge wirelessly on Nike's shoe-sized Qi-compatible mat in three hours.

Nike says its new Adapt BB shoes are an evolution of its HyperAdapt 1.0 shoes from 2016, the athletic wear company's first multipurpose performance shoe to feature power lacing. The Adapt BB shoes will also be Nike's first continually updated performance product, as they will receive opt-in firmware updates.

The shoes are priced at $350 in the United States and will begin shipping on February 16, according to Nike's online store.

You could probably have said the same about the iPhone
Not really.

There is a difference between a mobile computer that can replace multiple devices in a tiny package (music players, cell phone, PDA, camera, GPS) vs shoes with a built in gimmick.

I don't like them but you're right.

There are use cases that make sense:
Seniors or injured people that can't bend down to lace their shoes. I herniated a disk and experienced that for three weeks. I would have loved those shoes then.
Ski and snowboard boots that you relax on the lift and then tighten up while you're riding. However there are quicklace systems that work as well.
I hurt my back a few months ago and couldn’t bend over to tie my shoes easily either. The irony for me is that I had been wearing a pair of Nikes that have these crazy laces that kept/keep untying themselves. These shoes are useless for running. I can double knot them and within 20 minutes they have somehow untied themselves. It’s like they’ve got some weird nonstick coating on them. But they are my most comfortable and attractive shoes so I persisted in wearing them through my recuperation. Thankfully I have smart-alecks who thought it was funny to have to tie mom’s laces for a change.

I have some Sketchers that don’t have laces that I wear sometimes. They’re not as comfortable for extensive walking, though.

Elderly have been dealing with footwear forever and probably, due to the involvement of iPhones, wouldn’t use these shoes anyway, as a lot of them who are too disabled to deal with laces also don’t seem keen on smartphones beyond very limited uses. As my generation takes their place...eh, I still don’t see it happening but who knows. Maybe.

Shouldn't these be in kids sizes, since anyone over 4 knows how to tie a knot?
And tying laces is an archaic technology. There are far superior ways to fasten a shoe to someone's foot such as a BOA system. This looks like the next evolution.

Oh bless you! I’m getting these for my Nikes from hell! Yahooooooo!

Reality : "Players will be able to spend their timeout resetting bluetooth hoping that this time their left shoes will be able to sync."

I would like a shoe that can automatically transform itself into a flipflop when my feet start to get sweaty

Interesting, but it's a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist. We're pretty good at adjusting our shoes manually.
and we were pretty good at hunting our own food, riding horses, etc. Don't be so afraid of evolution. 100 years from now we'll be laughing at those archaic things we used to put on our feet.

spray the laces with hairspray. that should make them stick and keep the knots.

Like others stated, most people are not looking at the big picture. They are quick to dismiss anything that doesn't suit them. I'm all for self lacing shoes and in 10 years there will be no such thing as an iPhone as we know it. Either the Apple watch or some other wearable will be the dominant device which controls everything via gesture or voice.
