this is BS

I cant beleive they sold out and put a fricking 2.4GHz antenna in the ipod to get it to work with nike instead of using the same antenna for bluettoth and give us BT streaming over a2dp!!

this sucks!!!

what are you talking about. They never sold out? Obviously, they believed that this is what the market wanted...and judging by the post, and me selling my 1st gen touch to buy a new one tonight, they were right.

IMO, the real reason that they put the Nike + in was to make us forget about the GPS radio. Yes it would have been nice to have bluetooth, but then people would be using their ipod as iphones which AT& T probably requested that they don't do that. I think the wired headset with the mic alone is going to eat a little out of the iphone sales.

i honestly have no idea why anyone would want to jog with an iphone or touch strapped to their arm. the thing is too big and clunky to be practical for running. it'll just bounce and after a few miles bruise too much. isn't this what the nano is for?!

If the couple extra ounces is to much maybe you should hit the gym in addition to the track;)

I run with mt touch all the time and now I will go get the sensor and a another touch (can give my current one to my wife). However, I will skip the Nike shoes (hate the fit) and use this instead:

Hahaha :D Absolute nonsense. It would be banned across the globe if crossed into cellular frequencies. Seriously dude, think before you type.

Anyway so can we expect a software hack to enable it on the iPhone? The Nike+ is effectively a little proprietary wifi chip, it's interfacing with the iPod Touch's wifi connection so there's zero reason it wouldn't work with the iPhone.

No, really, I'm not kidding.... My iPhone went haywire with reception every time I went running carrying my iPod nano with nike+ and my iPhone 3G....

I think it might be my forcefield that causes things to go haywire....

PS: By the way, I'm selling my third gen iPod nano and buying a 4th gen iPod nano...... and I'm TURNING OFF cell reception whenever I go running with my iPod nano, because it's driving me NUTS....

and Yes, I have at&t with decent 3G coverage..... What else do you need to know, and it might sound rubbish, but it is having some issue, and it's either Nike+ causing it, or my iPhone has bad cell antenna.....

Are you able to use a Bluetooth headset with your iPhone? If yes, then your iPhone is not too sensitive to 2.4GHz signal or its internal Bluetooth circuitry is not causing problems for your cell phone circuitry. Then, that only leaves your Nike+ emitting much more power as a possible cause. Well, that is not very likely, either, but that's all I can come up with.

Is this actual confirmed news? I'm still hoping on Friday this turns out to be incorrect and Apple lets us all in on a Nike+ app that uses the GPS for the iPhone.

This would be freakin awesome, but unlikely. Just a couple points: -

* Running with the iphone is fine. don't want to run the risk of it getting wet or dropping it? Get a bum bag/fanny pack (is that what the yanks call them?) they work just fine!

* Nike+ Sportsband is tre inaccurate most my runs are a 1/2km under there actual mapped distance  PLEASE NIKE/APPLE USE THE GPS GOODNESS WITHIN AND GIVE US SOMETHING USEFUL!

Ha ha.... and what good would that be to Nike?

And subtracting Nike (since they wont make profit from GPS) from the equation.... you get RunKeeper! Look up the AppStore!

I don't use bluetooth headset, since where I live, THEY BANNED USE OF CELL PHONE WHILE ON CAR, AND THEY ALSO PROHIBIT THE USE OF HANDS FREE SETS AS WELL.... (and it is a city law, not a state law)

I called my friend who works at local Apple store, and he offered me to take a look at it tomorrow....

It looks like they decided to go the bluetooth route so Nike could still get their cut. I think the best we can hope for is that the shoe piece will be "assisted-Nike+" so that the GPS comes into play somehow.

Fixit has posted disassembly photographs of the iPod Nano and iPod Touch. These disassembly photos are common after new products are released and provide readers an interesting view of the internals of the latest Apple products.

Occasionally, however, there's also an interesting find. In this case, iFixit has found that the iPod Touch actually contains an unadvertised Broadcom BCM4325 Bluetooth chip. Apple has not made any mention of Bluetooth support in the new iPod Touch.

What Apple did announce was that it had added Nike+ wireless support in the iPod Touch. According to Apple's FAQ, the Nike+ system uses a "proprietary low-power 2.4 GHz radio protocol" which is specifically said not to be Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Bluetooth, however, appears to use the same frequency. We're uncertain if a Bluetooth chip can emulate the Nike+ protocol or if there is a separate unidentified Nike+ receiver in the iPod Touch. :)Regardless, this will certainly trigger speculation about adding Nike+ support in current iPhones and additional uses of the Bluetooth chip in the iPod Touch (such as Bluetooth headsets).:)

iFixit also let us know that the iPod Touch's headphone jack has five wires coming out of it, while the old iPod Touch only had four. This suggests that the external microphone support is likely true.

Update: The Bluetooth chip is likely being used for the Nike+ support

They might just be trying to get peeps to buy itouches for the n+ they release it for iphone3G later.

I've got runkeeper, not keen. And if the app was sold for a $9.99 or maybe more it would sell by the bucket load. I'm no economics whiz but... software/nike app + iphone = loadsa money coz they won't have to ramp up the production of shoes and dongles and what not.

I'd happily part with $10+ for a decent Nike+ GPS app!!!

Agreed and I for one am ready to pay double the price for a Nike+ app than RunKeeper but the fact remains that Nike is NOT a software company and I dont see it becoming one any time soon! All it wants to do is sell shoes and not software!

We should all let Apple know that this a feature that all/most iPhone users would love to have. It would increase sales (me thinks as GF refuses to buy iPhone till Nike+ support)

Done that! And I encourage everyone to file up.... though I'm not sure how much help this'll be if it's a hardware bottleneck!

iPhone Nike+ App: A Vain Hope

Nike obviously are investing in software, just look at the Nike+ website and Nike+ coach systems on the internet! I just don't get it. All the people I know that run with the Nike+ Sports system do not use Nike+ endowed shoEs. They use a pouch or something else. So from my very small cross sample of Nike+ users it seems that Nike are loosing out on their shoes.

So why don't they put a decent amount of effort in and get the Nike+ app with GPS, nike+ website intergration up and running (sorry, no pun intended) and release the damn thing on iPhone?!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would happily pay double the normal price for a app if it meant I could keep all my gadgets in one easy (and it is easy to run with "unless your a smurf" I loved that comment) package.

I also write this in the vain hope that all this effort I have put in on this thread will be for naught. When, come Friday old Jobbzy pulls a fast one and goes "Ta da here's Nike!" with the new update. One can hope!

If there are any investors out there, I'm a software engineer with a lot of embedded software development experience who's looking for someone to partner with to develop an iPhone app that basically takes all of the things that are great with the the Garmin lineup of products, and incorporates them into an iPhone app. Yes there are other apps out there, but serious runners need the capability to do interval workouts and be able to pre-program those workouts into the device. What will set this app apart from anything out there that Garmin could put out is the fact you will be able to integrate the iPod functionality and build "genius" style track lists that will play during a pre-programmed workout.

Sned me a PM if you're interested. Not only am I a software engineer with over 15 years of experience, I'm also an avid runner who's part of a very competitive running club here in Tucson, AZ with a coach who has a 2:16 marathon to his credit and his wife who's an Olympic Trails qualifier.

A few thoughts here. It kind of sucks that Nike+ won't work on iPhone -- but if they add future enhancements, such as GPS or just use the accelometer as a pedometer (not in your shoe! :p but on your arm), then maybe the transmitter isn't needed.

Also, maybe they can offer a transmitter for iphone that uses traditional bluetooth? It's a way to sell more transmitters and I know I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Add me to the pissed list. I use the nike+ sportsband and have been waiting. Like I'm gonna go buy another ipod for that though give me a break. I know they could allow the existing sports kit to work with the iphone geez come on already.

If you have a sportband, spend $49 and get a shuffle. Less obtrusive and cheaper.

This is really disappointing.

Unless there is some serious technical hurdle (and I seriously doubt there is), Apple can provide support for both new and old Nike+ transmitters/dongles by writing a device drivers for iPhone OS and the app can there recognize it when inserted.

This is one big up-yours from Apple to everyone that used Nike+ so far. Only an idiot would buy iPod Touch for running if he/she has iPhone.

Try this: Runner
Comes pretty close to Nike+

the thing about nike+ is not JUST the pedometer, but uploading the data to the nike+ site for tracking your progress, completing against friends in virtual 'races', setting challenges for yourself and various other features the nike+ site has. at least for me, that's why I use it and not another device that tracks your running distances.

About uploading data

Ok, I understand. For myself, though, the most important feature of Nike+ (and Runner for that matter) is the spoken feedback during running, but I am a bit of a lonely wolf in the sense that I don't long for sharing my runs with others, but I see that it is important for some people.
I think we'll have to add a run community service to the to-do list for 2.0 then...

i do a lot of running too and i don't really see the appeal of the nike+ thing

Aren't nike happy that they've already conned us with the overpriced trainers made by wage enslaved 13 year olds in china? Now they want to digitise my foot and follow me.
