Can't you lock down the entire itunes store?

It isn't as if your kids can't find naughty words elsewhere on the internet.

Even if you couldn't lock down the iTunes store its the parents responsibility to... parent, not Apple's.

I think this has less to do with censorship and more to do with potential loss of revenue from iTunes.

You must not follow Trent Reznor too closely, he basically gave away his last 2 albums.

Lol

LOL wow...at least he did the right thing and paid homage to Apple. Because it's surely due...

What's really frustrating about this is the app was already approved. Apple really needs to be more consistent, using the same reviewers they used when the app was previously reviewed. Or better yet, have a "rep" for each developer they go through.

Plus, someone who will download this app knows exactly what they're getting themselves into—NIN fans who know every word anyway. Ridiculous.

Apple does have a rating system for apps, and in OS 3 you can restrict apps with a particular rating from being used without a passcode.

But the problem is, how do you rate an app like NIN or as a better example, a Twitter or browser app like Safari? The app has no adult content within, yet the things on the Internet it connects to may have adult content. So how do you rate such an app? On Twitter, or Safari, you can potentially get some talk of child porn. So do you give every Twitter or browser app the most adult rating?

The apps you speak of need parental controls built in, just like Safari currently has. The iTunes store needs to have parental controls for accounts, to let parents block certain apps from children.

The fact here is that the "objectionable" content is NOT on the app itself, if you read apple's email to the nin app developer. It says "The objectionable content referenced in this email is "The Downward Spiral"."

The fact is that the SONG TDS is NOT part of the app itself, it can be accessed with the app. Along with forums, fan submitted remixes, fan art, fan opinions, etc...

Meanwhile The iTunes Store SELLS the song, along with NIN's complete catalog...

And here are the lyrics to the actual "offensive" song:

he couldn't believe how easy it was
he put the gun into his face
bang!
(so much blood from such a tiny little hole)

problems have solutions
a lifetime of ****ing things up fixed in one determined flash

everything's blue
in this world
the deepest shade of mushroom blue
all fuzzy
spilling out of my head

(in my opinion its much more offensive watching the news every morning than this particular piece of music)

It's all about free PR

Both NIN and Apple get great free publicity over this humorously ******* sabre rattling. The PR teams for both organizations probably thought this up over some beers at the pub. NIN gets more fans to buy their previous app. And Apple make parents somehow feel that their (******* randomized testing) review process makes the App store is safer for the kiddies to browse. Nothing needs to change.

ymmv

Not only did he give away his last 2 albums - they were then available for torrenting - allowing for the download of LOSSLESS quality of his songs, something which mainstream music has yet to embrace seemingly. I so wish apple would start doing LOSSLESS or extremely high quality music, as the current quality (although adequate) is still somewhat lacking. Fortunately for headphone enthusiasts the settings within them and audio files can disguise enough quality discrepencies that you can't really tell the difference between quality types unless you really concentrate.

To expand on this you can download the entire album in studio quality (think mulit-gigs way beyond CD quality) and then he encourages you to experiment and remix it. This is how bands should release their music. Not necessarily for free, but give me the highest quality digital downloads that can be offered.
FWIW it's also completely legal to download Ghosts I-IV (even though Reznor only uploaded Ghosts I), as the whole album is under a CC license.

I don't know if there's a download available for the HQ audio and Logic files of Ghosts I-IV though (was provided with some of the physical albums)

Anyway here's the oh so bad song:
he couldn't believe how easy it was
he put the gun into his face
bang!
(so much blood from such a tiny little hole)

problems have solutions
a lifetime of fu*king things up fixed in one determined flash

everything's blue
in this world
the deepest shade of mushroom blue
all fuzzy
spilling out of my head
Oh noes, so offensive.

Yep, and I don't know if that's what the update was about, but there's apparently pretty heavy breakage under some non-us locales.
NIN gets more fans to buy their previous app.
The one that's free? You don't make any sense.

Since when

Do educated persons really need to use expletives?

Based on what I read here, these persons would do well to proof-read what they write. It would make it easier for educated persons to understand what they are writing/saying.

Censorship is necessary when MY rights (not to have to read/view crap) are not taken into consideration by someone who is posting.

He only needs to ask one simple question of Apple.

Why is the content objectionable when it comes through an iPhone app but the exact same content is not objectionable when it comes from the iTunes store?

Apple should at least publish standards.

Lighten up, Doc. They're words.

The truly educated are rarely offended by expletives.

Like it or not, a well-place f-bomb is just as effective as anything else.

Censorship is necessary when MY rights (not to have to read/view crap) are not taken into consideration by someone who is posting.

LMAO. That's not your "right", nor is it anyone else's. It a privilege, really.

If your justification for censorship is "I don't want to see that garbage.", I'd hate to consider what your justification for torture might be.

Just label the app "explicit content" and use parental controls of for the app store if kids shouldn't download it.

Never understood that. Apps get denied for bad language, yet we can buy R rated movies on the iTunes Music Store. It's so incredibly backwards.

What? Nobody's forcing you to read anything, if you don't want to read it, just don't.

Don't want to see garbage? Close your eyes, you're done. You're not talking about rights here, you're talking about your misguided sense of entitlement.

Why is Apple suddenly the censure police? I say let the people decide what they want. If you find it objectionable don't ****ing download it....duhhhhh

btw Doc-don, no offense, but you sound like a pretentious douche...

You have no such right.

Don't you know that there are some people who apparently haven't been exposed to such filthy, ungodly words as **** and ****? MacRumors is only trying to protect these people's fragile sensibilities.

On a more realistic note, the comparison Reznor makes between the App Store and Wal-Mart is entirely accurate. I can buy a death metal albums with lyrical content about butchering babies and eating their brains off iTunes, but Apple's afraid of me being exposed to a few instances of **** in NiN's app?

Thanks goodness Apple's ensuring that we'll never be exposed to such filth.

EDIT: Seems MacRumors automatically censors certain uncouth language. Thank you for saving me from myself!

No, we all thank MacRumors so we don't have to put up with your gutter mouth and inability to express yourself like an adult. You don't have the right to go into someone else's house (MacRumors) and make your own rules. If you don't like the house rules, go behave however you want in your own house. It's 2009 and STILL some people don't get that guests don't make the rules.

As for the App store, yes, they could use some more consistency, but throwing a temper tantrum doesn't help. I wouldn't expect Reznor to understand that, but he's all about public theatrics and incessant drama, anyways. Grow up, Trent. Please.

Oh, no! Not the JAILBREAK COMMUNITY!

I think that this is a key part of Trent's case. He's basically thrown down the gauntlet, promising to release the app -- one way or another. If Apple isn't willing to play along, he'll happily release it to the Jailbreak kids, then tell everyone how to Jailbreak their phone.

Trent taught a lot of kids to use The Pirate Bay when he released his free stuff to the 'net. I doubt that Apple wants something similar to happen to them.
