This is the one id love to see personally.

OMG, that would be the best mobile game ever. Are we really sure Nintendo is going to develop main entries of its games? What's the differene between this announcement and the pokemon game already in the appstore?

I've tried playing Mario on a touch screen.... it was complete **** IMO. You just don't get anywhere near the same level of control with a virtual d-pad verses a real one.

I would love to be able to play Animal Crossing on my iPad. It seems like the perfect game for touch screen controls.

People, read the article. This is not going to be what people are hoping.

----------

Macrumores linked to a different article then the one I read this morning. The one I read said that these will not be ports of old games but remakes that will likely be limited in content. The article I read said that they will likely be dummied down somewhat.
From what I've gathered from various articles and sources, Nintendo look to be using their IPs to effectively advertise their larger games on their own hardware. They mentioned as much last year. I wouldn't say dumbed down, but mini games sure. People expecting ports of Mario 3D World and Smash Bros are going to be disappointed.

The end of the DS?
No. The DS was the best selling handheld of all time and the 2nd best selling console ever. The 3DS is following nicely. Do you want it to end?

----

From the sounds of this thread a lot of people would be happier getting a 3DS. There are lots of closet Nintendo fans who should just be done with it already!

I would totally buy a Nintendo controller that I could stick my iPhone in and play Metroid Prime... I'd pay 50 dollars for controller and game if the controller could be used with other games too.

Too bad they aren't talking about porting existing or older titles. That's the only way Nintendo would get money from me. We aren't buying a Nintendo console any time in the future.

This would be an excellent solution if they're insistent that their games be tied to proprietary hardware.

I think that if Nintendo made games that allowed a side kick app, much like what GTA 5 has, then I can see what they are likely to do to accommodate their consoles.
However, that's simply not enough at all.

Look at Sega! They made a ton of money re-releasing and porting their games. You could not punch the smile out of my face when they released Jet Grind Radio.

Nintendo needs to swallow their pride and just release the games on iOS and android. Their had been nothing but interest on this for years now.

I think it was that Zelda touched a lot of lives and so it left lasting bit of nostalgia. The game itself was fun. And fantasy RPG's have always been popular, even today the "swords and the sorcerers" genre is still very popular.

There was also a huge marketing campaign associated with Zelda in the 80's. Lets not forget about The Legend Of Zelda TV show that was put in with the Super Mario Super Show

Can't forget about the cereal that went with it

And don't forget, before the Internet, we had Nintendo Power to tell us what was worth playing.

I had a small booklet that was included in a Nintendo Power edition that had a whole bunch of squares in it and YOU had to draw in the entire map of Zelda. I had the whole thing mapped out.

They need to bring Nintendo cereal back. It would be the only thing my kids would have for breakfast. Better than that "Frozen" cereal that I just had to buy because my daughter saw it.

In a way Nintendo is like the Apple of the gaming world, controlling the software and hardware sides of the entire experience.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure it will go like this:

  • Nintendo tests the platform with some easy access games such as Pokemon companion games and candy crush like titles, intending older game ports and new game releases for a later date when the platform has proved to work.
  • The attempt fails because Nintendo fails to differentiate itself from existing titles, while the real games are still on hold.
  • Nintendo is convinced the mobile platform was a bad idea.
  • Nintendo ditches plans for more widespread mobile ports and returns to its old strategy, convinced that they tried it and it didn't fit the Nintendo way...
  • Nintendo releases the Wii-us a new console aimed at simultaneous networked gaming through a proprietary controller that uses the Nintendo DS as a plug in screen. It's different but has no use case.. Great

I didn't mention Gamecube, I mentioned Wii. The Wii U can play Wii games. So it is an extension of the Wii. Even your old classic Wiimote will work with it.

If you get a Wii JUST to play Gamecube games, maybe just get a Gamecube instead?

Hahah I love how you say this right after asking me why I'd get a Wii instead of a Wii U since the Wii U plays Wii games. Hmm maybe because the Wii U is far more expensive, and essentially worthless because it has next to no games.

I see both completely original Nintendo titles built specifically for mobile and a lot of companion Apps to support and drive sales of traditional console games.

okay, bookmark this and comeback in 2017. If I am right, that will be when things turn. If I am wrong you can gloat. But 20 million is about how many phones apple sells in a month or less. by the time we are at the A10 chip I still expect that 90 percent of what casual to medium level gamers want can be done without extra hardware. But again come back and two years. Clearly only one of us will be right.

Comparing gaming consoles to smartphones makes zero since, on any level. Smartphones will never be as powerful a a big box, so long as they continue to upgrade the big box. 20 million is a huge number for gaming, hence why it's the largest number ever for it, ergo it isn't going anywhere. Smartphones will also never have the tactile feedback and necessary buttons/ergonomics, which means you'd have to carry a controller around with it. And airplaying makes no sense as that will simply be putting some simple games on your TV. While you're controlling it with a third party worthless controller.

Though being a long time lurker, I had to join the forums because everybody's glossed over a major point in the article:

Nintendo and DeNA will team up to develop a “multi-device membership service for the global market," available next fall for PCs, smartphones, tablets and also Nintendo gaming consoles, according to the report.

Aside from the article never saying anything about coming to iOS, this sentence pretty much dooms this initiative. I doubt Apple will allow a 'multi-device membership service' to serve up games. They haven't for guys like steam, so why would they for Nintendo?

Personally though, I would love to see Nintendo games on iOS. I just don't have my hopes up for it.

Nintendo's first party titles beat the crap out of any other first party titles. Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, New Mario Bros. U, Bayonetta 2, ect. Xbox or Playstation have no good first party titles on their platform yet.
One thing Nintendo knows how to do is make software. They've had a hard time with getting third party developers to make games for their platform. That is where the Wii U is criticized the most.

The Last of Us.

The Last of Us.

I completely agree that TLOU is a fantastic game. But that doesn't compare to what the Wii U currently has. That may change as the current gen builds steam but I still feel that Nintendo's 1st party games have the most fun and most replayable titles than any other system past and present.
(Sega is a close second :) Genesis and Dreamcast for life!)

and essentially worthless because it has next to no games.
Really? I own 14 Wii U games, 7 PS4 games and 9 Xbox one games. Hmm Wii U is winning the current gen race in my home....
