Um... it's exactly the same. Its the unrestriction of software onto third party alternatives that would otherwise be tied to their own hardware. People wanted to use Mac OS 7, but didn't want to by a Macintosh.

So you want to compare 3rd party selling cloned, unlicensed computers running another's company's operating system to a video gaming company selling their software (not Operating system) on another platform.

That's not the same, but we'll see how successful they are, I think it's a great idea, especially if they release classics only. Stuff that was for NES, SNES, N64.

Let's hope nothing like this happens this time:

Sounds like a lot of people are under the wrong impression. This deal doesn't mean you'll be playing Super Mario Bros on your iPhone (why would you want to play that on a touchscreen anyway?). It's for new games and/or games that would work well on a touch screen.

Am I the only one that really likes the Wii U? They got rid of those annoying motion controls. I HATED the Wii because of that. The Wii U is a million times better. I do not care one bit about graphics. Their games are very nice though.

Nope, you're not the only one. I honestly believe the Wii U is the best console this generation. Pair it with a PC (or Mac) and you have the best gaming setup this gen.

Nintendo is like Apple. They are so stubborn to get with the times.

I wouldn't mind paying a subscription fee to get unlimited access to all of their NES/SNES/Gameboy/DS titles

Nintendo, like Apple, is good at making money, so they don't "get with the times". I don't even get why this smartphone deal is necessary. They sell hardware right now where they get to make their own ecosystem and everything, and it sells well.

That happens today too with some people. They want to use OS X but don't wanna buy a Macintosh. But in this respect it's not the same thing. Your example stretches it pretty far. We're just talking about Nintendo games, not their OS.
Doesn't matter. It's still software. Nobody uses a DS or the Wii because of the OS, they use it for the games. In the world of Macintosh, it's the other way round, people wanted to use the OS. And Apple allowed people to use OS 7 without Apple hardware, just like Nintendo are allowing people to play their games without Nintendo Hardware.

Yes. Because it is exactly the same. It is still software that people want to use that is usually locked down onto specific hardware, now useable on a wider range of 3rd party devices.

Their consoles are fine, because graphics don't = fun. However, Nintendo are complete morons because they don't release games. The CEO should have been fired the second the Wii U was launched, as they had virtually no games, it was and remains the most embarrassing thing in gaming. They STILL don't have a Zelda out, hahahaha. In fact the Wii U has like 3 games worth playing and it's been out for years. I'd buy the Wii over it any day of the week.

I refuse to buy their hardware because they're too stupid to make software for their hardware. Look at how many games are available for the years old Wii U. It's so laughable.

False, they have Wind Waker HD for the Wii U. It is not a NEW Zelda game, but they do have a Zelda game for Wii U. And I bought it since I never played it the first time around.

The Wii U is basically an add-on to the Wii. It can still play Wii games since it has a Wii mode. So why get a Wii and not a Wii U?

All consoles have rocky starts. I am STILL waiting for Halo 5 and the only game I play on my XBox One is Halo 4 (through the master chief collection). So to me, the Xbox One has only ONE game worth playing, Halo. Most other games are cross platform and I get them on PC.

Nintendo has the most popular and fun games. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, ...

Mario Kart is really fun. As I said I hated the Wii and I skipped several handheld. I think the last Mario Kart I played was 10 years ago or so (the original DS). So some might feel a bit of a "Madden NFL" situation going on and are getting tired of Nintendo releases. Taking about a 10 year break, these games are very incredible.

I have also been re-playing Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS. I keep the 3D mode off. That has been the longest time I have played a game in so long (not counting sandbox that has no story really like Minecraft and Terraria).

I just downloaded Majora's Mask since I am about to beat Ocarina of Time and I have never played Majora's Mask.

The new Mario Kart is my favorite game for Wii U, but honestly, I don't even like any of the other games, even the new SSB, unless you count N64 remakes like OoT and Majora's Mask (which are also on GameCube). No Nintendo console has justified its cost for me since the GameCube, so that's the latest one I own. The Wii U is a great system, but I've given up at this point on Nintendo games ever returning to their previous glory.

The Wii U is not a superset of the Wii. It can't play GameCube games, and it doesn't come with GameCube inputs (though you can get the adaptor of course).

I agree wii u had a rough start but wii u library is pretty solid now.

It's only solid if you haven't played the original versions of all the remakes they're pumping out. I don't get why people buy a console before there's a single game for it.

Well, they're not going to do anything with them, and there's an obvious demand for old Nintendo ports. They could have turned GBA4iOS into an app store for old Nintendo ports and made bank, but Nintendo is stubborn as a mule and apparently want to leave money on the table.

Their stubbornness makes people buy their hardware, which overlaps a ton with smartphones and PCs. And now they have their own ecosystem. It's working well for them.

Really? There's Wind Waker HD... and I'm not sure what else, as far as remakes. Unless you're going by the whole "any game that looks like another game is a remake" thing, in which case we haven't had a new video game on any console in years.

I didn't mention Gamecube, I mentioned Wii. The Wii U can play Wii games. So it is an extension of the Wii. Even your old classic Wiimote will work with it.

If you get a Wii JUST to play Gamecube games, maybe just get a Gamecube instead?

You're entitled to your opinion and you can spin it anyway you want but it's not the same thing. There is a vague similarity in the idea, that's all. Comparing computer and it's OS is not the same as comparing a cellphone and a video game.

Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time are on the 3DS. Not that I mind. I loved Ocarina of Time and I never played Majora's Mask.

I haven't bought a Wii U, but it's more from lack of time to play it than lack of desire. I'm not sure what you're talking about there being no good games for it though, I would love to play any of these games and they're all new titles:

Smash Bros for Wii U
MarioKart 8
Super Mario World 3D
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
ZombiU
Pikmin 3
NintendoLand
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
Splatoon (admittedly not out yet, but soon!)

Compare the numbers of smartphones to Nintendo DS's. With smartphones there is untapped potential. People already own them. Cost of entry for the consumer is small.

Finally. Nintendo realising they can't survive on the outdated hardware they release every 10 years. This is where they should invest their properties, they've been stuck in the past for too long.

What outdated hardware? Mario does not need to look like Crysis you know.

To me, the good old Nintendo games are more entertaining and fun to play for hours than any game currently in the iOS App Store. If you give me Super Mario Bros or Bomberman and all the rest, I'd be very happy to pay for it instead of using illegal emulators. Either way, I need my NES games and I'll get them whichever way is possible.

Nintendo is not (generally) selling games for adults, they sell for small kids. That is their market, always has been. See, you guys that fondly remember how important Nintendo was in the 80s and 90s were small kids then. Now YOU have different tastes, not Nintendo.

There are other people that still fit into Nintendo's market, even if you don't. Your lack of interest in games aimed at a 10 year old doesn't mean they are failing, it just means you personally have no interest.

Yeah, I would get a GC instead so I wouldn't need batteries and a Wiimote to start it :D
But it sounded like you meant that the Wii U is just the Wii but better. It's not exactly that. Still a much better system anyway. I love everything about it except its games.

Trading their hardware business away to sell more software might not be wise. Anyway, I think they'll make some small games for iOS but keep most of the legit ones for their own systems so people still have to buy them.

I tried Smash Bros, Super Mario World, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Mario Bros for Wii U and was disappointed. Didn't even want to play them after. Now, at my friend's houses, we don't play anything but Mario Kart 8. It's a good game but could have been much better and had some really annoying flaws like lag and no mini-map; seemed like Mario Kart 7 but slightly worse.

So late to the game. Wow.

And outsourcing the mobile development. Yeesh. Thats so 10 years ago.

They aren't outsourcing development of mobile games, at least not the top-tier stuff. DeNA is mainly being used to handle server tasks. Nintendo CEO Iwata said during the conference that Nintendo would be handling most game development themselves.

Just discussing the Wii side of the Wii system, the Wii U is just the Wii but better. It can play all Wii games, and Wii U games.

I was counting all the virtual console ones like OoT and MM. And it's still sad that Windwaker is the only true Wii U Zelda game thus far. I really want them to make a good one because I didn't like Skyward Sword, and I like playing Zelda at my cousin's house.

Ignoring Homebrew hacking, that is true. It also looks a lot nicer than the Wii.
