My Nintendo decoder ring indicates that when they say "by March 2017", they mean by November 2018.

I sincerely hope these aren't freemium games with in-app purchasing. I'd gladly pay $10-$20+ for a quality game that's not nickel & diming me every time I play.

This is Nintendo -- they're the last games company who would release freemium games.

Please release Zelf Ocarina of Time with opdated graphics for the iPad... I'd pay $ 50,- no problem...

As a Nintendo fan, I'm curious to see what they come up with. They make some of the best games, IMO. However, judging from some of the comments here and on similar articles, I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when they finally realize they won't be playing traditional/classic Nintendo games on their iPhones. These are new games whose purpose is to draw people to their dedicated hardware for the "real games".

5 in the next 2 years. Blistering pace.

It's not about pace, it's about quality and user-experience. Nintendo never rush their games. They always have rock-solid, well-tested games that are intuitive and smooth. I'd much rather that than gigabytes of day-one patches, or a saturated market full of similar games.

A lot of games companies can learn from Nintendo's commitment to quality.

Hahaha, read that as "Nintendo's First Smartphone"

I was thinking, nice, it'll look like an old school NES controller and to answer calls you'll have to jump up and break a block with Mario ...

Wow that seemed like some well considered and thoughtful approach. Nintendo is late to the party and they should have done this years ago. But I bet they come in and are seriously disruptive. I'm looking for something new to play on my Air 2, so I hope they consider tablet market as well.

"...wouldn't simply be ports of existing franchises and would be more tailored for a smaller, bite-sized experience. "

and... why? how much smaller could 16 bit games be compared to say, GTA San Andreas for iOS? you want to soup up micro gaming experiences so they blend in with the rest of the pack??

are you basically trying to avoid telling us you don't want to pay some of the royalties that might come with releasing a competent port of classic games? pretending the experience wouldn't be 'up to par' sounds like a cop-out.

give me zelda. give me mario. pretty simple really.

I'm just waiting for a new :apple:TV with an App Store to play Nintendo games on the TV - Mario Super Kart was one of the best games ever!

I hope they inject something into Smart Phone games.

I was a big fan of the N-Gage which bought actual games to a mobile. Same for the iPhone at the start. Super Monkey Ball, Resident Evil, Dance Dance Revolution, it was a great handheld gaming format.

Now, games on smart phones suck. Thanks to IAP. Turn based games, candy crush style games. Just boring! As a gamer, I haven't played any game on the iPhone since.

I hope Nintendo can do something to revive the situation!

Pokemon Rumble and Shuffle for the 3DS are both free and have In Game Purchases.

There's a real difference between games which are free and have purchases available, and freemium games. Freemium games are games which pretty much depend on the user paying to progress - Clash of Clans, Candy Crush - these are very different to Pokemon Rumble and Shuffle.

I legitimately don't understand why they wouldn't port the classics, and add new entries into those franchises.

It might be they cliche response to this topic, but it's right.

Another future option would be to use the Iphone / Ipad as peripherals to a WiiU, with exclusive content for the Apple products. The WiiU is an under selling system, but it is still a damn cool idea. I ended up getting one just because of how much damn fun it is. The concept is original IMO as well and pretty well executed.

I still think they should release IOS only options like what is being spoken about here.....but they could have this option as well.

I'm thinking more of the lines of a partnership where Apple and Nintendo work together on a console.

Interesting to see a CD-I reference, back in the day I interviewed with a company in Chicago developing the platform.

2017 seems like a long time from now, when they're already five years late to the party.

Apple TV Gen 4? No local game storage, they're all streamed remotely, so you can't play without connectivity and they can be deleted at any time without your consent.

and here comes to...

"Just release the mario and zelda for $1 each and you'll make millions!" comments.

Not happening.

Even at $9.99 per game I'd still buy Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc., on iOS…. :D

----------

These will be $10 games that feature the likeness of Nintendos famous characters, but the games will probably have 5-10% of the content a console game would have. Nintendo are some greedy MF'ers.

I have a Super Nintendo Emulator baked into a now banned App Store app (Remote Files), running a fully functioning ROM of "Zelda A Link to the Past". Full saves and no issues whatsoever. So content and storage at a 16-bit gaming capability is of no concern. The real question will be if Nintendo can get Nintendo 64 titles (Zelda Ocarina of Time) to run smoothly on iOS. If so, Nintendo stands to make a lot of money—not sure if games beyond that platform can be as easily ported.

Ever since the Wii U, I have this feeling that Iwata will run Nintendo to the ground. They are trying so hard to stay revelant, but they refuse to do common things like online play right, a unified online service, more powerful consoles to stay competitive and gain third party support, among others.

They are also making weird decisions like discontinuing amiibos when they are in high demand, not bringing the New 3DS with faceplates, and now this move to mobile gaming.

I wonder how the company could change should Iwata left the company. Also, how will Nintendo USA change without Reggie, this guy is also not doing as good as in Wii era, and I think that means that the Wii's success was just luck.

I love many of Nintendo's IPs, but they need to do a better job as a company.

The last Nintendo box I had was the Nintendo 64. Haven't played any of their games in years. I made a decision to focus on buying tools that I could use outside the house and for work and other things than just playing games. This led me to the iPad, the Mac Air, and the iPhone. I still like playing on occasion and when I do it is a game that runs on one of my devices (as in, not getting any more devices just to play).

If they are able to create compelling games for my idevices, then I would love to reconnect with Mario and Zelda.

Even better if the ATV will allow games/apps to run so we could play on the big screen when at home.

Even better still would be if Tim sent me my damn watch already.

i can't even blelieve i didn't think of it right away: PLEASE for the love of god give us multi-player Goldeneye with controller support. i.. i can't even...

damn..just release the mario and zelda for $1 each and you'll make millions!

The reason why only few game companies make games with Nintendo-like polish is simply it's too expensive to develop one like that.

Even if you make millions by selling one at a buck each, it's not enough to recup the development cost.

People love dollar games, but often don't realize the compromise that comes with it.

Honestly I don't think it's actually a good move for Nintendo. Comments about Nintendo making "millions" off games on iOS are kidding themselves, Nintendo last year had sales of $4.5 Billion USD.

I'm thinking they will most likely try to give people a small taste of their franchises to get them to finally buy a 3DS or WiiU

The key is Nintendo needs to keep it simple and not go "NintenCute", as I call it when Nintendo tries to force something odd on the public like the name Wii...

Standard, original new games from Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, PunchOut, Metroid and StarFox. Start off with those priced at either $4.99 or $9.99 and that will make Nintendo not millions, but BILLIONS of dollars and some very excited people of all generations.

Come on....Just release mario and zelda for $1 and you'll make bazillions!!!
