Don't see why they couldn't get N64 games to run smoothly since according to some reports, the iPad Air 2 is as powerful as the XBox, which was at least twice as powerful as the N64.

----------

There are way too many freemium games but that said, there are also quality premium games where you pay up front and never again. Implosion: Never Lose Hope is one recent example. Lost Within, from Amazon of all companies, is another.

The N64 was a very odd console to develop for in comparison to the PS1 and later Nintendo consoles. And it shows in emulation and ports of N64 games. It also does not help that the N64 was more or less a console for first party and Rare games because when I was doing a lot of emulation those were the only games to be even close to being playable and most people developing emulators aren't going to waste time on creating fixes for random N64 games very few people will play.

Even official ports and emulation by Nintendo aren't perfect when it comes to the N64.

then why are so many classic games 'imitators' like running scrollers or floppy birds so gosh darn popular? they become the 'go-to' games for a lot of people who aren't into RPGs and strategy.

when there is essentially a clone of most classic nintendo games out there with nearly identical gameplay mechanics at the top of the charts for months or years, and then the people who own the rights to the originals tell us 'won't play well, bad experience', i just don't really buy it.

edit: and as far as controllers, they're getting better just like tablets and smartphones are. the first ones i tried were garbage, the one i tried last year was 'ok' - i imagine that in time for holiday season sales this year we'll see some even better controllers - might change people's tunes. who knows? all i know is that classic games just needed a screen to be on, a controller (now optional), and power to play them. what are tablets and smartphones again? powered screens with touch capabilities and the (ever improving) option to use controllers too. just seems silly.

This is exactly it. Take Oceanhorn as an example. That game controls wonderfully, works like a charm - and is essentially a 3D version of A Link to the Past. Which is why is has done so well.

I do agree that games like Mario 64 would be tougher for touch controls, and that is a great game, but there is a lot of the franchise material here that could be smartly reproduced to play excellently.

If anyone knows what works best on touch gaming, it's Nintendo - I'm sure they learnt at least something from the touch screen DS for the last ten years!

Force Touch could be huge here. Coincidental timing? (I think not.)

These will be $10 games that feature the likeness of Nintendos famous characters, but the games will probably have 5-10% of the content a console game would have. Nintendo are some greedy MF'ers.

You can only be a greedy MF'er for so long before it bites you in the rear.

If they would just take the mini game collection that they put on some of the Mario DS carts and release it in the App Store for like $3 or so, I would gobble that up.

That would be a good start, but I'm hoping I can play a full Mario or Zelda game someday on my iPhone/iPad. Either that or Nintendo releases a portable console with a display you expect on a mobile device in the year 2015.

Maybe Apple & Nintendo are cooking something up.

Dogg.. gimme the greasy eye-tie bros and the emo elf for decent coin and you'll make a motza..

Dude ... just release the mario and zelda for $1 each and you'll make millions!

The obvious answer is to convince Apple to build-in native support for Wiimotes via Bluetooth. Viola, now you have a workable remote for at least classic gaming for those not looking to use the touchscreen.

Oh yes. Because the iPhone 4S would be much better.

Seriously? Angry birds came out in 2009, which you know one of the biggest hits in mobile gaming. And then sega joined ios bandwagon in 2011. If nintendo would release mario in 2011 imagine it could topple angry birds dominance in those years.

I would buy their apps all day long. :)
Yes I still have all my Nintendo systems, and ports of just about every Mario.
Took them long enough.

Prediction: It'll literally be Link: The Faces of Evil re-released. I'd buy it.

The problem is that the iPhone is nowhere near as suitable as Nintendo's hardware for Nintendo's kind of games. The Nintendo DS and its later versions are perfect.

It's interesting how alike Nintendo and Apple are. Both make quality products, and both have more or less a "walled garden" approach with their products, but one is extremely successful at it while the other keeps faltering.

its 2015 Nintendo.... its way over-due... while allot of other ports/games are on mobile devices...

I'm still waiting for super Mario Brothers..... Maybe HD version, but no radical change to the point its not even the same game anymore..

But why not do that with their older games. They don't support the original Super Mario trilogy on any current hardware.

Both the Wii U and 3DS - current hardware - support the "original trilogy". So did the Wii before. You should probably research before you randomly toss out incorrect information.

That's in large part because Apple actually advertises their products. :p

The gamepad feels cheap and unwieldy compared to hardware made by Apple.

Apple chose a bigger market.

Nintendo's only recent flop has been the Wii U, how else do they keep faltering?

And here I am, waiting for a Pokémon Red (/Yellow/Green/Blue) release on iOS.

They haven't even released those on the 3DS yet, either. Aside from the occasional remake the Pokemon Company just charge ahead with new games.

This is Nintendo -- they're the last games company who would release freemium games.

Except that the people actually making the games are known for releasing freemium content. Also, we already have some freemium 3DS eShaop games.

I'd like this as much as the next guy but there is no way they are going to toss aside their virtual console sales like that.

They're going to sell it for way less on iOS than their own hardware? I speak, of course, of the Virtual Console.
No, I'm just poking fun at the very first comment. I highly doubt they'll release anything for a dollar. Just look at Square-Enix's games.
