Why does this have to be so difficult?

No.

Because a machine running DOS couldn't get you on iCloud and use Find my Friends and all that.

It's about FUNCTION. Not about specs.

Can it do what you want/need it to do? Does it work as designed and intended?

If it works as designed, 1 or 2 or 10GB of RAM is irrelevant.

Only us geeks are worried about such things. The rest of the planet just wants to use and enjoy their phones and tablets and just don't care about RAM.

Apple figured this out and has adjusted their marketing accordingly.

And they sell millions.

Sooooo, there must be something to this "specs don't matter". It doesn't mean I will buy a device that can't do what I need. Like your very witty DOS example.

That's true if you don't want your current device to work with future operating systems.

Specifications affect function. I've already responded to your "sells millions" argument, which you ignored so I'll leave that alone since their marketing has reeled you in... Hook, line, sinker.

I agree that, in a vacuum, specs don't matter, and what matters is whether it works as I want it to.

The problem is, several iPad releases have had this blasted Safari tab reloading issue. We have a strong suspicion that more RAM would fix that.

So to me, having 2GB of RAM is a proxy for knowing that the tab reloading issue will be fixed or reduced. If Apple had slapped up a slide that said "RAM is the same, but we added paging to Safari to fix the tab reloading issue," I'd be perfectly happy (assuming it worked as advertised).

(It's *possible*, since anything's possible, that having 2GB or 4GB will prove completely ineffective. If that's the case, we'll just start complaining about how iOS Safari needs an overhaul.)

Actually, Tim and Craig were great, they were more comfortable than they were in the past few years.

Phil (the guy who demo'ed iPad) looked like he was under the weather. He is usually very excited about small silly things, so he was the only one that seemed weird.

Your right, Tim and Craig did seem happy to present new info but yeah Phil, he was not good, it's not just about presenting the product but presenting it so that we (the public) want it and we want it now, Phil did not accomplish that. The iPad Aid 2 really did have a lot of new stuff but Phil did not seem to be into it and he rushed past the iPad mini so fast that if you blinked well you missed it.

So no confirmation either way? I'm not prepared to accept IB Times as a source... :p

I wouldn't know. I use iCab browser and have no reloading issue. I have an even stronger suspicion that it is software related.

It has. So what's your point?

They market. We buy. Or not. The success or failure of a marketing strategy is measured in terms of sales, not the satisfaction of a .001% fringe element of the potential customer base. Nobody can please everyone all the time, so you pick your battles. Apple picked. And they are winning. Seems like the right thing to do, for Apple stockholders, which eventually are the ones who really need to be happy. Not the few geeks fixated on a software issue which they blame on RAM.

That's true if you don't want your current device to work with future operating systems.

This supposed "future proofing" is an illusion, either by design or by intent. Fact is most electronic gadgets have a limited life span. Sure, we'd love for them to last for years. I have a radar and a GPS on my boat that is over 10 years old. Are there newer, better systems out there? Sure. But they still do what I need them to do, so newer stuff doesn't interest me (nor can I afford it).

So if your iPad 1 is doing what you need it to do, then what is the point???? Its about the device DOING something, not HAVING something. If you need to run this app or game and the extra speed of the Air 2 will give you a more enjoyable experience, then upgrade. That's what I'm doing. XCom and Infinity Blade III will run even better.

But I expect these devices to be superseded by better, faster devices in a year or two. You should too Then the question becomes - do you need or want the new version, or is the old one doing what you need it to and don't need or want the new one?

People have been yelling for more ram since the beginning yet they say they listen to their customers so they brought back the Camera Roll.

Camera rolls affects a whole lot of users. RAM is something people that sit on computer messageboards obsess over. Guilty as charged, of course.

Not all of us buy because a corporation tells us we should. Not all of us are convinced the "functions" the iPad has, is all that we should want and that we shouldn't want more until Apple tells us we should, and not all of us lack the ability to think for ourselves and make informed decisions.

I understand that these aspects of your life are things you're willing to allow Apple to dictate for you, but you need to get used to the reality that some of us choose to keep our individuality and independent thinking in tact. We're not trying to convince you to get yours back, so please don't try to convince us to give ours up.

The Problem is that more advanced OS will slow down the device but you can't roll back to a previous system. And even worse when you choose to stick to the OS you are using happily it might happen to you that you have to make a factory reset which results in the installation of the newest OS.

Is there not a single tech blogger or journalist who used the opportunity of the hands on to test the safari tab reload issue on the ipad air 2?

You are very confused. Let me explain it to you.

Apple doesn't dictate anything. They make a product. They offer it for sale. I buy it if I WANT to. If I dont, I don't.

So keep your individuality and see if you can get some perspective with that. I am not asking you to give up anything, except the bellyaching. Go buy an Android tablet if Apple is so evil dictating stuff to you. Me? I just look at all the available products and pick the one I like best.

Not confused at all. You're the one with the need to defend Apple. You seem to care a lot more that people are complaining about the product than I am about people like you who are happy with it. You seem to be of the attitude that we should all think like you (let apple do our thinking for us) or go somewhere else. That's not going to happen, and it's time you make friends with that fact. People will complain, and people will complain about Apple products. How it sits with you is not a concern to anyone else.

and yet my wife's 1GB iphone 6 is faster than my Note 3 with 3GB RAM and 3d graphics which are about as good as my ipad 2

oh my god.. for the last ****ing time... its not about how FAST it runs! Its about how many apps you can use for "multitasking" before you have to reload the app.

Actually, it's about the device doing something over a period of time and doing it well. Not just in this instant. Specs matter, and they've mattered since the first transistor was invented. Apple may have figured out how to market to low information consumers, but don't for an instant think that's all there is to figuring out one of their products.

I don't understand, what is this thinking for yourself that you're referring to? How is someone's decision to buy an iPad Air 2 any less informed than what you decide to buy? How do you even know what assessment that person has done before buying?

If after reading this thread and countless others like it around here you haven't figured out what I'm referring to, then we are in agreement. You don't understand, and we should leave it at that.

And good luck with your quest to convince everyone that everything Apple does is for everyone's own good.

That quest is in your mind. I've never said that and you just made it up.

Apple is a for profit company. What they do they do to ultimately give more value to their stockholders. Their design and marketing decisions are made to increase the adoption and sales of their products.

And, despite YOUR opinion, they've done a fantastic job.

Complain a little more. Maybe they'll listen. How much stock do you own?

No, go ahead, please explain. I'm intrigued to know what your reasoning is.
