Cropping and zooming when editing without losing quality for a 1080P output is useful though. 4K panels are dropping in price rapidly. I just picked up a 28 inch 4K monitor for pretty cheap now.

Physical pixel size will determine the quality of the crop.

Maybe after two years will mention that in their event as a new tech revelation! - this is what Apple recently do)

Does anyone know if apps can record at 24fps or 30fps at 2k or is the 10fps limit on all photo taking (which is how they get 4k on the 5s) on the iphone 6? I would be perfectly fine doing 2k at 24fps or 30fps. Heck even 1080p using photos to video would be better than native 1080p video recording.

I honestly re-encode all my video to 480x2?? for my ipad and iphone video playback. I keep the 1080p version for TV playback of course. With good quality encoding parameters using handbrake it can still look acceptable for me at 480x240 for example. 300MB movies are easier to transfer back and forth and the quality is not missed on mobile devices to me. I could care less about seeing the high details of someone's hair when viewing on my ipad or iphone when out and about. When I am at home I stream the 1080p version from my server directly.

Why don't apple just have an options menu to let you choose between 4k @ 30fps and 1080p@60fps?

All other smartphones offer this choice so why not apple?

I have a Note 3 and playing back 4k and 1080p videos on my PC (1080p monitor) shows a clear improvement in quality in the 4k videos

Can't you use Vizzywig 8xHD to record 4k video? I believe it could be done using iPhone 6. I think this is the only option right now for the new iPhones. $50

Rather than complain about one feature that's not on the iPhone, can't you do the same with pretty much every phone on the market to complain about? Stop expecting companies to put niche features in their products.

Here's a list of android 4k phones if you are interested

Also, why not try a GoPro Hero 3 or higher? I believe they support 4k

4K is 8.3mp. The iPhone's camera is 8mp.

4K content and cameras are limited at best. Wouldn't have much use at this pint in time for most people

What is your screen's resolution? If it's higher than 1080p, then that's why there is an improvement, though I doubt your screen is a 4K screen, so you aren't seeing the whole improvement. And I think that's the point. The amount of improvement you get wasn't deemed necessary for the current market. The number of people who would get anything out of 4k video are so limited that Apple decided to work on other features.

I am personally way more bummed at the choppy performance of the 6 plus than it's lack of 4k video. If I was the guy that keeps his phones for 3+ years (around the time I think investing in a 4k tv and monitor might actually be worth it) I would probably care more. I'll have this device for, at most, two years, so it's honestly a moot point for me (and I am guesing many, if not most, others).

It's ridiculous really. Apple launches a 5k retina iMac and the iPhone 6 still doesn't support 4k video recording.

I ended up getting a Panasonic LX100 to record 4k video, but before that I had a Note 3 and the 4k videos on either are absolutely fantastic on the 5k display of the iMac.

I suppose 4k will come when the iPhone finally goes above 8megapix in resolution, but by that time it will be an incredibly meh feeling.

Hopefully Apple somehow manages to pull a 5k video recording mode with h.265 / HEVC hardware encoding in the 6S. But probably not.

I just hope they plan to bump the base model storage to more than 16 GB when they do that. As it is now I have about 1.4 GB left over after installing my apps and about 1 GB of music. I think I can only record about 6 minutes of 1080p right now.

There are other apps that record higher than 1080p resolution than the native app because they use a rapid picture mode which has much better individual frame detail than the native video format.

I use MoviePro but there are others too like ProCam.

The iPhone 5S/6 records at 17Mbps, which is 2.125 MB/second. With 1GB left over, or 1024MB, you can record 482 seconds, about 8 minutes. Yeah, you can't really record much with 1GB space...

----------

The app Ultrakam records at 3264 x 2448 pixels.

3264 x 2448 isn't really 4k. 4k is (at least) 3840 x 2160, at a 16:9 ratio rather than a 4:3 ratio. Such apps are really taking e.g. 30 8-megapixel photos a second and stitching them into a video. You can see the difference at this youtube video. It won't be true 4k like the Note 3.
