I have all 4 bars and 5G is displayed in the upper right hand corner. I am on Verizon wireless and doing speed tests and not getting past 70mgs download.
No 5g for me for some reason. Tech support doesn’t know why.
Anyone else ?

Is this what you are referring to?

Same here. I think it probably Verizon pulling a fast one and telling the phone that the LTE connection is 5G, so it displays it. I see no difference in speed when i turn 5G off.

They put a trouble ticket in for me.
Again more smoke and mirrors from Verizon. I have a tower right behind my house. This is such BS.

Just kind of how 5G is currently, been using other 5G phones for a year or so. 5G will be great in a few years, just not really noticeable now except when you get great speeds in very specific spots.

You are telling me that 70mps is acceptable for 5g right now and using my iPhone SE I get the same download speeds? Ummmm no...

so on my iPhone 12 I only get LTE/4G option. Does 5G get put as a option when you actually change plans? I still haven’t changed plans to a 5G one. But I didn’t think the phone would know that out of the box.

you have to understand, there is 2 types of 5G. Sub6 and mmwave. If you live smack dab in a big city or a stadium. You will get mmwave or as Verizon calls it, ultraband.(1gb^ speeds) But since that is hardly available on a big scale you’re going to get Sub6. Which isn’t that much faster then LTE in the first place.

I will tell you that most of the 5G speeds I have seen over the last year have actually been less than that. There are a couple of pockets where I have seen speeds in the 100-200, but most have been less than what you are seeing. It is just going to take a while to build out.

I'm on AT&T and 5G is slower than LTE. Oh, well...

Don't feel bad. I'm on VZW and I'm getting a whopping 4mbps download speeds on Verizon's super duper 5G network. This is ridiculous because my LTE speeds are actually pretty decent in the 20mbps range. Nope, not 5G even though my iPhone 12 Pro is telling me I'm on 5G.

5G on Verizon is 10-20% faster than LTE.

5G UW is the super fast one.

Also signal strength does not necessarily equal speed
Ok so if my 4G phone is pulling down 60 mgs per second my 5g phone should only be 72 mgs per second? That is so Busch league.

I have 4 bars of 5G. It should be much quicker than 4G LTE.

Verizon’s “super fast” 5G is shown on the display as “5G UW”. That is only available right now in 55 cities in the U.S. and there only in certain parts (stadiums, business district etc.). And you need to have one of their premium Unlimited Plans.

When it’s says “5G” only, it is their “Nationwide 5G” which is basically a dressed up LTE.

Yeah. 5G Auto means phone will switch between 4G and 5G automatically depending on what you’re doing. 5G On means 5G is always active as long as it’s available. I thought you were on 5G Auto where the 5G icon is always visible even if the phone is actually using 4G.

I turned 5G to always on and still was getting LTE on VZW. Checked the Verizon map and there is a hole covering about half of my neighborhood with no 5G. Oh well, it's more important away from home wifi anyway.

The one that came with the new phone from Apple.

that's the truth... verizon says 5g on sub6 will currently give little to no speed boost over a similar LTE signal although they claim 5G has other advantages in terms of data stability etc. that's why verizon literally "flipped a switch" and turned 90% of their LTE network into "5G" last week because it didn't suddenly get faster. there is years to go until the base 5G shows real, real speed advantages over good LTE and even more years until mmWave (verizon's ultrawide band) is realistically usable in a lot of places.
