Good deal for an inexpensive alternative. But still, it would be good to have a little consolidation in the product line.

And still Apple is putting the less percentage of any technology company in R&D. If they just put a fraction more of their profits into it, they would be able to make their whole line up state of the art and having more satisfied customers.

The R&D has been probably pumped into the newest carpets in the spaceship and redecoration of their shops. Don’t see it in their product offerings and I’m looking at them for years.

You got that right! :) Like me (and unlike the newer readers in here) you can probably still remember when Apple was what they called a visionary company. “Think Different” was their grammatically incorrect strapline.

Now its ... “Move Along Now. ‘Nothing To See Here!” :( And people still think that’s fine. Short memories.

I need a new ipad, as I have an ipad 2. $329 sounds like a bargain next to the price of the max. I don't care if it's not the latest and greatest.

Entry level iPads, if you get them near release, are a bargain, esp compared to everything else in the Apple lineup. A few hundred for an iPhone with a big screen and no data plan is very affordable. Even if you use it as a web browser + internet tv + basic task machine, it fits a lot of casual use and content consumption models nicely.

Please don't quote this message. If Phil Schiller reads it, expect $499 to be the new entry point for hardware from 2 years ago.

It will likely have an updated processor and a laminated display...and $20 more than current model.

Enough to entice new buyers...but not existing owners.

The catch is that it will work only with the Pencil 2.
That’s how Apple will make its margins.

It wonder how much better it will be than the current one? The current one is on sale often for $249. That's just a steal of a price.

I’m debating this as well. I figure the old one may even drop to $199 once the new one is announced.

Last year, the base 2018 iPad was hands down the best value in Apple's entire ecosystem. During the holidays, you could buy one for as low as $229. I like the idea of keeping the price low and just updating the internals to A11 with maybe 3GB of RAM. If iOS13 is a big step forward for iPad, this iteration will be even more capable and enjoyable.

I think there is a large market of folks that would be very happy with an older iPhone model plus the base iPad for their personal computing needs (work needs vary greatly, and most employers supply traditional computers for that purpose). If you are committed to the Apple ecosystem, the base iPad is a great device for staying in the game without succumbing to Apple's new high prices.

It’s nice to see someone who understands the target audience apple is going for with this iPad. I know they pretend it’s an education focused device but you nailed the main customers. I fit in that bracket. I would love an iPad Pro but when this iPad does everything I need it to at $250 (Amazon price) I cant imagine spending $tripple that or more for a pro.

Genuinely curious, why? When apple was struggling it made sense to streamline their products and focus on a couple products they could make really well. Now they don’t have the cash flow issues and can make whatever they want. So what if there are a range of options?

I would sell my 2018 and upgrade if they do a laminated display. I’ll do it even faster if it has the anti reflective coating and is basically the screen and glass from the iPad Air 2.

I'll be sold if it's got more than 2GB of RAM in it.

And then 4GB will get the same treatment... Then 8GB... Then 16GB...

The real question is — is there something that 2GB is preventing you from doing? Is your iPad sluggish?

Give it touch id gen 2, for christ sake

Of course it would have that. Why wouldn't it? Did they release an updated iPad with old Touch ID tech already? If so, shame on them.

As a former tech product manager, I can make a couple of points: 1. Aging but still successful products often just get updates due to parts availability (older components stop being available, and need to be replaced with newer ones), and 2. CPU and similar chips have lifecycles, where early on they have low yields and need to recover the high startup costs; and later on the yields increase and they no longer need start-up cost recover objectives, so they can be priced closer to marginal cost. Additionally, each chip generation requires a production line to be in operation, and it is expensive to keep more production lines going than needed. Thus, over time, chip like the A series NEED to move from premium end products to lower end products, in order to maximize profits over the lifetime of the chip design, and retire the older lines.

Thus, it is very likely a CPU upgrade is required both to keep the iPad and A series as profitable as possible.
Ah I see my mistake, sorry, what I meant was I thought it was odd to make a small change like 9.7 to 10.2 inches when it would mean a pretty big change to the chassis to do it for a very minor gain, not that a small chip bump didn’t make sense to me :)

Very happy to hear this news!!!
Apple has a history of throwing out perfect designs simply for the sake of change and wanting to appear hip and modern.
Keeping the headphone jack and a dedicated home button means a BUY for me :D

Expected, but adds up to a boring iPad year and possibly boring iPhone year too. Only product Apple releases this year that anyone is excited about is Airpods. Or am I wrong?

I bought an Air 2 directly from AAPL when they announced it ... paid like $550 USD.

It's the single-best AAPL product I've ever owned, & to this day, I use it every single day, multiple times per day !

One of the rare AAPL products that I thought I got really good value with !

Sad, isn't it.

The "move along" chant has been so overused that the "people" have become actual sheep, and, … they kept moving along.

The downside, they might move along all the way over to Androids - apparently not too much of a difference. I don't know - never tried to go over. Played with a friend's smartphone - unintuitive.

If you are lot loyal to iOS, then there is zero incentive to buy an iOS device.

DAMN rights I'm not blindly loyal to corporation or their shareholders. Also, not loyal to an operating system.

iOS is great, but it's not the best. Sorry, SIRI no where compares to the utility of google now. And what makes iOS so special these days? messages? (most of the world uses whatsapp, line, or wechat)

iOS has some great security but it's quite limited in functionality compared to Andriod. God forbid you need to run a torrent on iOS, or just need to upload files fast from someone else's phone or laptop (who isn't in the mac ecosystem).

If you blindly follow a companies products, then you get silly response like "you are holding it wrong", "one button mouse is the way to go", "4 inch screen is the best size", "Qi charging isn't something we find useful"

Apple is just like any company, but their corporate spin has been mind bogglingly silly. I would rather people think critically and push apple to excellence, because Jobs isn't there anymore and we know Tim doesn't push excellence.

An even better bargain is if you can hold off till mid to late November when Amazon sells them for $229. That's when I picked up the 6th gen for that price. Great price for an iPad.

And? So Apple should just change the design because you want to?

What do you do with the mini that requires an A12/A11?

If the price point is below the current 2018 iPad, even an A10 will be a huge upgrade over my A7 mini 2, and at a lesser price than what I paid for my mini 2 back then.
An A10 with 2GB of RAM is basically Apple saying you’re paying for a disposable mini that will begin to struggle with some apps in a year or two (with no iOS support probably after 2021). It wouldn’t be too much trouble for Apple to add an A11 with at least 3GB of RAM which are the same specs as the iPhone X.

The Air 2 has been amazing thus far - except bluetooth is dodgy. Not sure if it has something to do with the dozens of times my son has dropped it on the tile floor :/. If the battery goes it will be a hard decision but we will likely step back to a non laminated cheap iPad because it still has a headphone jack. It is his "walk man" and in all honesty, the AirPod is overpriced and batteries don't last long enough before needing a charge. Other bluetooth are just more money than is worthwhile - he really prefers regular in-ear buds.

Anything with much less than 4gb memory is probably not a good idea in the near future.

Cause it sucks?!

Because it takes literally half a second longer than the 2nd gen? Believe me, I know. I have a 6th gen iPad and an iPhone 8 Plus. I unlock them both dozens of times a day. I think you're more hung up on the idea of the 1st gen version being inferior rather than any practical difference in function. There's no doubt that the 2nd gen is faster, but if going with the 1st gen TouchID helps keep the price down even a little it's a no-brainer.
