i haven't seen anyone mention this... i notice that Steve says Leopard is 64 bit and there's no 32 bit version... i know my iMac G5 is a 64 bit chip, but i'm guessing the G4's and below aren't - does that mean they can't run Leopard?

Wow, the iPhone is truly going to suck.

No flash, no Java ( for the boat load of 3rd party apps ), locked down to 3rd party apps.

Wow, $600 for what? A nice UI with a limited number of apps? Thats all.

iPhone is a very crippled smartphone.

Nokia has just released another plugin to iSync that syncs movies, music, photos and other content to your phone.

Seems as Nokia Web 2 browser will have the same amount of functionality than iPhone's Safari. Something that really surprises me, I thought Apple would have pushed out the boat in providing plugins. But they haven't.

Phones aren't crashing like crazy due to 3rd party apps, either, as some one suggested. Thats pure fanboy'ism.

If Apple wanted iPhone to be sand-boxed, they should provide J2ME: Very secure.

It comes in 32bit or 64bit flavours, so G4s will be supported.

You really think that Apple will cut off a huge proportion of its user base?

Many people were asking the same thing in another WWDC thread.

This thing will still sell by the millions despite any and all of the irregularities that have been speculated upon so far.

All it will take is some cool rapper to sport one in a magazine or video and boom the stores will be empty overnight.

The bottom Line :

At $600 a widescreen multi-touch Ipod with coverflow ALONE will result in them selling 1 million units. Everything else is a bonus...

YOU ALL KNOW THERE IS NOTHING COOLER ON PLANET EARTH RIGHT NOW - NOTHING!

I think think of plenty of things that are way cooler than the iPhone :)

I'm wondering how long the multi-touch screen loses its appeal and becomes a hindrance in day to day iPhone use.

We'll find out quite soon!

Deal breaker...

at least for me it is, for now. It doesn't have most of the things I need. I don't need an entertainement (movies, iPod, blah, blah) I need a smart phone. This is a far cry from a smart device at this moment, bleh! :(

I saw the commercial last night where the guy's typing. WTF was Apple thinking when they made the keyboard? It looks like it would take forever to type out something, it reminds me of the hunt-and-peck method I used when I was 8 and still learning how to type properly. You can't use both thumbs to type because you need one hand to hold that brick.

Every other phone I've had allows me to use both thumbs when typing and I wouldn't have it any other way.

No flash. No real 3rd party apps. Crappy keyboard. This thing won't be the success some people think it will be

Craddle the phone in two hands and thus freeing up your thumbs for the keyboard input, I'm sure that would work.

iPhone is no good for touch typing - no feed back on the F or J keys.

everything else is a distraction and added expense. I don't want an iPhone - but I might want the crux of the iphone - without the phone part - and with the ability read PDF's, Doc's, Xls's, keynote docs etc etc.

But the fact that I have to buy it as a phone means I don't want one. End of story.

Pretty disappointing, if true.

Although, a lot of websites depend on Flash unnecessarily when there are better ways to do things using code. And Flash ads are just agonizing.

The main problem is that Flash and Java apps fit the bill perfectly for a lot of the apps that you couldn't do with Web 2.0 + AJAX. If Apple is going full-force into "web apps only", then they really should be supporting Flash and Java.

Interoperability

I'd make a guess that Apple's view is that Flash basically does nothing that Quicktime doesn't, and a sudden influx of, say, 10 million iPhone users unable to access Flash will force "developers" to "consider"* Quicktime and/or AJAX solutions to traditionally Flash-based apps.

Which sucks, at least initially, from an interoperability standpoint, but if Apple's gamble works, it may even be the death-knell for Flash as a technology.

* Developers rarely consider Flash to begin with. Flash is generally foisted upon them by PHBs. But the same PHBs will actually listen to the developers if they can point out that their flashy new webpage will be inaccessable to iPhone users.

Your post was great otherwise, but it's not up to Apple to implement any Flash players. Not for Flash Lite and not for regular Flash. Adobe allows you to make programs that produce Flash files, but player implementations are forbidden and would likely get sued.
Incorrect. Adobe provides downloadable plug-ins for common Desktop operating systems like Mac, Windows and Linux. It also has a downloadable plug-in for the PocketPC (Windows Mobile 2003SE and 5.0).

But they also offer a program whereby a "next generation" device manufacturer can add Flash themselves without Adobe's direct intervention. The manufacturer is required to pay a royalty to Adobe, and in return, they receive the full Flash Player 7 source code, and Adobe's blessing to perform the porting process for themselves.

Well Apple cut off a huge user base by switching to Intel chips.... my reasoning for this comment? Applications. You have been seeing apps that are only made for the Intel Macs and now EA's games will be the same. Go see my rant in the EA announcement forum.

I would really be surprised to see G4 chips be supported when all is said and done. The only thing that will save the G4 chip is the PowerBook.

well after sleeping on the issue of no flash, at least we'll have youtube, since the videos will be h.264. hopefully they update this phone with flash sooner or later. i decided i'm still going to buy this phone. why? because i have hope the updates will come, and i need to leave sprint/nextel, because they are horrible with service where i live. i hope my $600 is well spent, you only live once right? i just realized i'm a gadget nerd!

Hey, what was that MR posting about the possible 2nd gen iPhone "for a different market" I wonder if that would be geared toward the more biz people (like me :D) to be able to open/edit office files + pdf? I know, high hopes here, but come on, that phone could do it! If it has OS X wouldn't it have preview for pdf already? What does iWork do (never used it)? Can it work for this/office stuff? If it does then I'll wait till is available for the iPhone.

Is there any way widget apps can be made to perform these tasks?? Seriously, I want to know. Thanks!!

Initially, Apple cut off none of the existing user base. Of course, as Intel Macs grow more popular, there will be only Intel based applications... same thing that happened to OS9 -> OSX transition. You'd expect nothing less. PPC based Macs are legacy.

OSX will be PPC compatible for a few more cycles yet...

G4 will be supported in Leopard, as will G5. However, it may be quite painful.. who knows?

I don't blame EA for Intel Mac only games, converting them from x86 to PPC is a lot harder than x86... to.... x86 OSX.

This is crazy. I'm flashing back to the first time that I tried to view a Flash-based site on my Palm T|X and only then realized that it didn't support it.

I hope that enough people complain about this that Apple gets the message loud and clear.

The iPhone will never reach its potential

Why? Because Apple won't be allowed to let it happen.

And why can't Apple let it happen? Because AT&T doesn't want it to happen. Imagine if Apple releases a real SDK. Guess what the first app written for it would be? You got it. A VOIP app. Imagine being able to use Skype on the iPhone. Hook up to a wireless network and make phone calls. That would be awesome. But guess who loses out on that? AT&T, thats who.

I wouldn't call everything else a bonus. Have you seen how much AT&T will charge for their service? Neither have I. I think I'd prefer the $600 iPod rather than the $600 iPhone with the AT&T 2 year subscription plan.

There's already plenty of phones that supported VOIP and WIFI out of the box ( i.e., Nokia E-Series, excluding that crappy E-62 north american dumbed down version of the E61. I'm sure others could add to this list of other capable phones).

Why would the iPhone be different?
