Silly theory. The iPhone doesnt revolve around crappy ATT. There are other networks all over the world carrying iPhone which generate a hell of a lot more income than ATT.

Precisely, these theories just go to show how insular some of the poster's mindsets are on here. Apple are not going to delay a product just for the convenience of the American carriers.

I just don't see how they can get away with this. I know a lot of people aren't going to switch away from iPhones, but they will lose some, guaranteed. People who bought a 3GS are going to have an upgrade available in June (they already have early upgrade available) and will be tempted to look around. I don't see them going away from the year pattern for that exact reason... Unless they have one hell of an upgrade coming out in September with LTE, NFC, 4" screen, etc that they expect will lure more people in September than they will lose in June/July.

This 3GS owner who's contract expires in October but who's early Upgrade was this past February IS NOT going anywhere! I'll wait PATIENTLY for the new iPhone Thank You!

I have to say that I do think the iPhone should be on a 2 year cycle. There's simply no need for a yearly refresh and it takes a LOT of dev time away from more important products (I.E The entire Mac line).

IMO I would say iPhones and iTouch every 2 years based on the fact that a 1Ghz processor and 1GB ram is more than enough for iOS with multitasking and fairly decent games. It'll also mean they can focus on getting it right instead of rushing like they did with the iPhone4.

Cell tech moves so quickly these days that a yearly refresh is almost necessary. Apple isn't like Motorola or HTC -- they have one (1) line of phones, and they cannot afford to have it fall behind the competition in terms of feature set and spec.

I don't know why everyone is surprised by the smokescreen from Apple, though -- they probably saw the sales numbers for the 3GS tank last year wen the iPhone 4 prototype did it's barhopping routine and went live on the internet. It's in their best interest to keep product moving until the last possible minute. The second everyone thinks the new iPhone is on the way, sales dry up as people wait around to see what gets released.

Why let the cat out of the bag now?

I also have a 3GS, my contract ends on June 24th, and I also had an early upgrade available in February. I also do not plan on changing, because I've used all of the major mobile operating systems and recognize that the iOS app ecosystem is far superior at this time, and that is what I care about first and foremost. But, I also pay attention to all of the rumors and stuff floating around, and realize that even if the iPhone 5 doesn't come out in June/July, it will instead come out in September/October, so I can wait. But there are going to be plenty of people who are less knowledgeable on this stuff, and will see things like the HTC Thunderbolt available and think it's better than the iPhone 4, and won't even consider the fact that the iPhone 5 will be coming out in 2 months.

This would be a huge mistake on Apple's part not to release a new iPhone. I know hardware isn't everything (user experience is more important to me) but Apple is way behind on some of their specs. They need to at least upgrade once a year.

Most people understand that they don't need to upgrade immediately.

And most people understand that if they defect to Android, they lose all the money they've invested in the iOS platform w/ their app purchases. The average iPhone user has spent approximately $80 on Apps as of 2009, and I'd be shocked if that number isn't higher now (http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/08/survey-average-iphone-user-has-spent-80-on-apps/). That's a non-insignificant investment in a platform that presents a compelling reason to stay with iOS and wait for a new iPhone as opposed to jumping ship to Android.

The thing I dont get, is that if ads based models work great, then offer the same on iOS and remove the paid version or increase the paid version price.

Starting to make more on android to me would say little about iOS and more about the profitability of ads-based vs paid app....

Its seems that this is much more the question instead of iOS vs Android...

Different market dynamics. iPhone users seem to be more
open to paying upfront while android users seem to prefer
free apps with ads. This may be a factor of payment systems
on android being all separate unlike the iPhone where it's just
iTunes accounts... Also I can't remember how many I've
accidentally "clicked through" an ad by mistakenly touching
the add banner in an app... I wonder how effective those really
are anyways....

hmmm...Apple's "Think Different" motto...why should Apple be predictable? I think it's great they are likely waiting a few months to bring out the next iPhone. This means it will NOT be a 3G/3Gs type of update, as many seem to think...that may be the pattern, but Apple is a game-changing company and they will change it up this fall.

I see liquidmetal in the next iphone and, eventually, all apple products. Remember, liquidmetal can be colored, which means the color runs all the way through, not like painted or inked on colors on aluminum, which, when scratched, reveal the "metal" color underneath.

Apple invented the 5 "flavored" iMac, and eventually went to a monochrome, yet more refined look than competition...but it has been some years of this and I get the feeling Apple had been waiting and watching this liquidmetal for some time before they acquired it.

I seriously doubt the next iPhone will be LTE compatible, Apple waits until a standard is set and perfected/available before implementing it in one of their products.

However, if they feel NFC is ready this fall, it WILL be in the next iPhone.

They will not update/refresh the iPhone "as is", too many problems with the glass back and antenna. It may look more like the iPhone 4 than the original, but it will have a liquidmetal back and an improved antenna.

Is it really that important that we have a hardware refresh in June? There is so much they can do on just the software front (like MobileMe). I think just another release of iOS with cool features will be enough.

There will be an iPhone 5 annoucement. Don't believe everything you read.

Let's hope so...

I'm eligible for a iPhone 4 upgrade with AT&T, have been for over two months. But I was holding out to June in the hope for the iPhone 5...

My 3GS is really starting to slow down now, and my 16Gig memory needs a major upgrade...

If I have to wait to 2012 I'd have to reconsider my options...

If waiting three extra months means that I get LTE nine months earler (ie. not waiting for the iPhone 6 in June 2012) then I'm in.

Finding this hard to believe, but if true, it's a huge mistake, phones aren't cars, people buy new ones all the time. My upgrade from ATT got bumped up to June 24th of this year and I bought the iP4 on launch day, I wonder what the best phone ATT will be selling this summer will be? I'm not waiting another year for Apple to fix their horrid notifications, and the stale OS that we are forced to JB for any actual useful functionality.

Who knows what insane phones the competition will roll out the remainder of this year, by 2012 the iPhone would be so far behind it would have trouble catching up unless Apple built a God phone.

Apple is going to make a liar out of me. I said to my wife we would get the iphone 5 in June/July. I better write an email to steve jobs.

Exactly. The phone market is a 2 year type of market. People buy new phones every two years (or 1.5 years, depending on their early upgrade options). Of course there are some that have upgraded their iPhone every year. To have a year-old iPhone 4 be the top of the line model when presumably millions and millions of 3GS users come up to their upgrade date? Stupid decision IMO. That's why I said that they need LTE, NFC, dual-core 1GHz+ CPU, and more in the iPhone 5 if it comes in the Fall instead; because they are going to need a super phone to get new customers to replace the ones that leave.

This September date doesn't make sense. Apple would want the young College bound kids be able to get an iPhone before they get to school in late August. As an Alumni when I went back to the college I went to (Hockey match) I was amazed that most of the college kids had iPhones. It look like a sea of them in the stands between the periods. Should have taken a picture. :(

Some of us that can upgrade their phones every year like too. I certainly will. I will get good money for the 4 and use that to buy the next one. The bigger piece here as some have mentioned is not just when "I" am due for an upgrade. What really matters is whether Apple stays ahead and relevant. It just looks bad if that don't do their yearly update. I agree they need to focus on iMacs and AppleTv etc...They are certainly big enough to handle it all. There are still things that ios lacks compared to android. HTC, Samsung, Motorola and the rest keep coming out with more and more phones. I certainly won't buy any of them, but some may be swayed. This is no time to be Cocky. Apple needs to keep pushing the envelope. That is what has made them great. They certainly could do better on the hardware piece. Although the glass on the phone looks sexy it is not practical or not hard enough. They could have done better.

I've actually been pondering the iPhone 5 myself. What is there left to add/change to it? Other than some cosmetic changes, and a "slightly" larger screen, what else is there to improve? Sure it can get the A5, but the iPhone 4 is already incredibly quick.

Hearing this makes me think that they'll drastically improve the iOS to make the phone feel and operate differently enough to make it "feel" like a new phone. At least, that's one theory. The other is that these rumors are B.S. and the iPhone 5 will either be announced at the WWDC or at the iPod event in September. It would be a massive disappointment to not hear of an iPhone 5 in the summer (as well as a shock that they're breaking their "tradition" so to speak). But with Job's getting sick and taking leave, as well as the Japan crisis, I can see them delaying the announcement, and possibly ship at the end of the year or beginning 2012.

I purchased my iPhone 4 on launch day, and the sleep/wake button recently broke. However Apple replaced it with a brand new device, so I should be set for a while. Granted it's the same phone, I love getting a new battery.

Usually the next version of iOS is announced a couple months early, then the iPhone is announced about a month early and WWDC.

If iOS isn't going to be previewed until WWDC, it's consistent not to announce the new iPhone at the same time. The timing supports previous rumblings of a September iPhone. You wouldn't expect any iPhone announcement until about a month before it's to be released.

Don't let the release of the Verizon iPhone in the first part of the year convince you that there will be no iPhone in 2011. They released it then so customers could buy it as soon as possible regardless of their plans for a future release. Tim Cook's comments at the time imply as much. It's the same reason as why they continue to sell the current model up to the day in which the new one is released (and why people still buy it).
