Once your phone (any subsidized) goes out of contract you continue to pay the subsidized plan amount, so the rub comes that if you are not getting a new subsidized phone you are giving the carrier subsidy $$ when your phone handset is paid in full. One thing about US Carriers is that they do not have unsubsidized plans that cover feature or smart phones. With one paying the subsidized plan rates after the contract matures this is offsetting the non recovered subsidies of those who get special dispensation to upgrade their iPhones with only year into a 2 year contract. I gave my wife my 3G iPhone and am paying the same subsidized plan rates as my iP4 but with the option that it's month to month and she can upgrade at any time without penalty or concern.

I guess it can make sense to extrapolate a cost imbalance for an off-contract customer but considering there's never been such a thing as an unsubsidized phone rate plan by any carrier (few people would be happy with having to agree to a two year contract and having to pay more than being off-contract) it's not so absolute that a month-to-month plan at a standard rate is an injustice.

The Android market in a nutshell. People don't want to shell out dough, so the developers allow Google to spy on them instead.

As I said, when we see the overall sales market (not the free market) for Android start to rival the Apple market, you've got an argument. Until then it's going to be anecdotes and apples-and-oranges comparisons.

Not really.

What will matter to devs is how much money they can make......ads vs initial and in-app sales....matters little which one is bringing in the bacon.

The bottom line is where is my app more profitable?

Whew!!!

This delay is good news from all that have been sweating out what they'll have to compete against in the iPhone 5.   :D :apple:

Have not read all the posts but I'm one of those who have been waiting for the white 4. (No, I'm not stupid, just have to buy a new one before June due to an insurance case..) Do you guys think it's possible that apple will boost the white one, if released instead of iphone 5, with 64 gb?

I don't see a reason for apple to delay the iphone 5 beyond August. Unless they are facing design/manufacturing difficulties resulting from the recent catastrophic events in Japan. Then again other manufacturers don't seem to be having similar problems with releasing their latest phones so it's anyones guess whether this rumor is true.

I'm really in the market for a 27" imac with Lion preinstalled but i might give iphone 5 a go if the specs are good. If not, iphone 4 also good... slightly cheaper too ;)

I don't see a reason for apple to delay the iphone 5 beyond August.

- It's a Developer's Con in June. They have a new OS with drastic changes coming very soon.
- iPhone 4 still sells good + Verizon version has arrived recently.
- So many people are still binded to long contracts.
- September has always been an "iPod month" but now iPod line is not at all as exciting as it used to be so it doesn't really require a "big" event. It may very well be replaced with iPhone 5 even this year (if it is coming this year).

last but not least...
- North Carolina.

do these help a bit?

I don't like it. My contract is not up until June 2012.

You know why I don't like it? It means come 2012 I may have to wait til September before they announce a new phone and I'm not going to want to buy an iphone 5 when most likely a new phone is months away.

I'm just not a patient person and I'd rather have the iphone 6 be ready when my contract runs out.

So yeah, this year it won't affect me but even for those of us whose contract doesn't run out this year, it could easily mean next year we are in the same boat...

Well, It works for me because even though my iPhone Upgrade Eligibility started in February my 2 year Contract doesn't expire til Oct 2011. So I'm ok with waiting til the fall to upgrade my 3GS.

well that will shutup all these so called experts saying a new iPhone was coming in June

No new iphone until 2012. Sure it would be nice to get iphones with better processors but then we'd have another release shortly after that with next generation network phones. Better to wait and put it together in one release.

My iPhone contract runs out May/June... What am I meant to do now! :(

Being out of contract is the best. You can walk away anytime. If you are happy with your current phone then hold onto it out of contract for a while. Wait until a major improvement from your current phone comes along so getting back in contract offers maximum benefits.

No way they're not coming out with the iPhone this summer. It's the father of iOS. Then again, the iPhone 4 was a pretty big upgrade. I hope that they bring out an LTE iPhone. I'm sold. Otherwise I'm fine with what I got.

The question will be can iOS 5 run on the iPhone 4 to full advantage. If so, there is no need to upgrade, it is a great phone as it is.

Anyway, this is the year of the iPad.

This from me, still using a BlackBerry... I am due to upgrade from next month though :)

I hope the next iPhone doesn't come until Summer 2012 because then I can switch to Verizon without paying cancellation fees for my family's 5 lines. If the new iPhone comes out this year, I'll be tempted to get it on AT&T (and probably will).

Disappointing as this may seem, if it allows Apple more time to include LTE and NFC, then a few months delay is warranted. Also, it allows more breathing room between the iPhone 5 release and iPhone 4 on Verizon release so as to not irritate the new Verizon customers.

I have to say that I do think the iPhone should be on a 2 year cycle. There's simply no need for a yearly refresh and it takes a LOT of dev time away from more important products (I.E The entire Mac line).

IMO I would say iPhones and iTouch every 2 years based on the fact that a 1Ghz processor and 1GB ram is more than enough for iOS with multitasking and fairly decent games. It'll also mean they can focus on getting it right instead of rushing like they did with the iPhone4.

Again, tipping point. We're there.

Of course, the Android version is free and ad supported which does help, but it is only 0.99$ on the App Store.

Hm, yeah, that disclaimer makes a helluva difference. Free vs paid — no comparison. Not to say ads are a bad revenue source, especially for a big hit like Angry Birds. That's the problem with ad businesses: you basically have to be #1 to get the revenue.

Also remember that 40% of all Angry Birds players on the iPhone have paid extra for the Mighty Eagle extra, plus all those who bought the special seasonal games. The iPhone is likely to be quite a nice source of income for Rovio...

On a sidenote I played Angry Birds on an Android today and quickly realised how much I'd miss the Retina Display. Not to mention the smoother action in general of iOS. The ads are bloody annoying, too.

I'm not so sure about that interpretation.

Not introducing the new iPhone would be a serious break from Apple practice.

But I guess it's possible. My iPhone 4 still feels "magical" to me. Maybe Apple will hold pat with iPhone 4 - what with the CDMA version and the white model being "new" this year.

It would be a serious break from past practice.

And on Macs...

"Now that we've shown you Lion, with all these great features from iOS that we're bringing Back to the Mac, here's a look at our newest iMac that takes fullest advantage, yada, yada, yada."

HAHA! What did I say? I'll say it again.

iPhone 4G, the "one more thing" at WWDC this year.
iPhone 5, not til Spring 2012.

Win!

Not cool. Coming from an iPhone 3GS, I seriously don't want to wait.

Get an iPhone 4 then....seriously, what do you expect the iPhone 5 to have that your 3GS doesn't other than retina and a faster CPU? Stick with the 3GS for another year...it's hardly going to kill you to do so and you aren't going to be left without any awesome features.

Try it on an OLED android screen - way better than the made up 'retina' screen. ;) (Cue hater!)

Yes, it does seem Rovio is getting the same revenue from iOS and Android versions now. What's interesting is that most of the iOS revenue comes from purchasing the game. Of course on iOS that means tens of millions of users have already paid Rovio, so what we are comparing now when we say iOS and Android revenues are the same are all of the users on Android versus just the newest monthly purchasers on iOS. Seems a fraction of purchasing power equals all of the ad revenue.

I'm on a 3G with a contract that ended in Feb. Why are people fliping out that their contracts are ending and a new phone is not available? From what I've been told, my contract is now month-to-month until I upgrade my phone. Even if it was under two years, I can still upgrade my phone. Granted, that locks me down for two more years, but I'm happy with AT&T and the iPhone. What's the worry?

Its not about my contract ending. I've had an upgrade for the last two years. Its just that I want a new iPhone.

I expect the iPhone 5 to have a better camer and be a generally faster phone overall. I know it won't kill me, but I'm just saying that I would have really liked if Apple didn't mess with the update pattern.

...

Didn't someone say a month ago that at The iPad 2 event it would be announced but not available until the summer. I think some people even said it wouldnt be until september for that I guess for most people that still may be true but only because it's sold out. These rumors are being planted by apple to keep competitors guessing. The only people I will believe is the wall street journal because other than them no one has any real info
