DUH!

I think it's pretty obvious why they pulled the switch campaign. Can't you see it... Narrator: "Apple has the cutting edge with the PPC Chips, much more superior to its compeditor, X86 (Intel) chips." Law Abiding Citizen: "Didn't apple just announce they are switching to intel???" Oops... that would have been the biggest screw up by any company in history.

I will be coming into some money a little later this month and had planned to wait until after Paris in case they released new Powerbooks. I will still wait, I think, but if I don't hear any good PB news I guess I'll have to go with a iBook to get me through the transition to Intel period.

The press release would've been released in the middle of the night here because it was Monday, during the day, in Paris.

Makes you womder what's going on behind closed doors? They seem to have gone to a lot of trouble to arrange this and then cancel it, they launch a major Mac mini marketing campaign then cancel it, I get the feeling something is going on that is effecting their oprerations in a major way.
*shrug* The expos are not produced by Apple. It does look as though Reed Exhibitions booked a big hall for a keynote simply on speculation. That seems to be the normal way these things go, given how close to the shows the announcements of who will be appearing are, even in years when there is a Stevenote.

This probably has something to do with Katrina, the economy isnt exaclty going to be at its best and as many companies found out in the weeks and months after sept. 11th it is a really bad move to announce or release products so soon after a disaster.

Maybe the disturbance is them realizing there's no way to stop mass pirating of OS X after switch to Intel?
An interesting thought, but it doesn't explain the mac mini campaign being pulled.

Maybe Steve's just decided since he's sitting on a huge iPod-powered pile of cash, he'll just get rid of the Mac lineup. That's it. No more updates. We'll have to live with the lineup we've got :p

I hope someone in the press Q&A just comes out and says "why was it canceled?" that way we shall all know. I hope.

Apple announced that, contrary to expectations, there will be no opening keynote speech at Apple Expo Paris on September 20 through 24.

Instead, Apple executives will host a question-and-answer session for the media, according to Macworld.

In a move possibly designed to lessen press attention, Apple revealed the information on a U.S. holiday weekend.

Steve Jobs has been the traditional Expo keynote speaker, although the announcement of the iMac G5 at Paris Expo 2004 was made by Phil Schiller while Jobs was undergoing medical treatments.

And, they released it in the middle of the night too?

It isn't a holiday in Paris.

Stop with the conspiracy theories.

WHAT THE F***!!!

I booked hotel and have bought airline ticket! What the HELL is Apple doing??! Everything they do recently seems really F***ED UP! Well I'm going to the Expo anyway, but this is disappointing! If it was cancelled cause they don't have anything to release then what..we have to wait till they sell Intel macs? Don't really know what to say! Just like the big event planned for the 7th Sept, to release a motorola phone with itunes software...come on if that's what they are planning then they must be joking as well as perhaps new ipods!! Ok ipods are great, better than any other player but they manufacture computers as well and I have to say that they are definitely lagging in that department!!

Well, think positive guys...

Apple will hold a Q & A session... journalists will ask about how goes the Intel switch, what to expect for june 2006, etc. Apple will talk about that and other things that may be in the card for sept 7th product announcement.

This may also show that the momentum for Macintosh Plateform is still great and Apple can relax a bit and wait before showing new stuff to keep us interested in PPC based Macs... may be in october or in January... this may also explain the cancellation of the mac mini trial... if people buys the products in mass, why create incentives ? Apple Exec team is clever and they are very different than they used to be...

I don't believe it!! I even had my K marked entry badge  I am really disappointed now, I have booked my flights, and am still going..but I had really hope to see some new stuff, and most of all a PB update. I don't know if I should make the switch early, and get my powerbook now, hmm...

Typical...promises promises, cmon Apple get your act together. What the hell is going on there?

cmon, Apple can do what tey want without having to ask permission... :(

the cancellation of the mac mini trial period and this keynote is an indication that Apple is still experiencing great sales of the Mac products and they postponed these events a few more months... they will come in time just to re-energize Mac sales if they drop before the first Mactel products..

I think I might know why

What might have been announced?

- Power Macs will Dual Core Chips
- Powerbooks with higher-res screens
- iPod mini with color screen and maybe flash
- Bluetooth Mighty Mouse

So what could have been held up? I say the PowerMac. Without it, the keynote would have been short and dull. We'll still see some of these products beofre the year's end, though. My advice: Don't buy a Powerbook until November 1st, the last day of the year that Apple updates its products. Same with the iPod mini.

Just trying to avoid a flamestorm if hidden sarcasm didn't work. ;)

Anyway, this thing sucks. I'm working only 80km west of Paris, so I'll go to Apple Expo anyway, but that genuine Jobs-note was the only reason I was really excited about it. I was going to be there @ 8am to get to the best seats.

Funny cause last I checked Oulu, Finland lied some 2 000km north of Paris... On the other hand I guess this is how a "mobile city" should behave anyway :D

Steve Jobs claimed (rightly so) that the Mac brand and Apple is strong, when he announced the switch to Intel. If they do indeed pump even more PPC hardware into the market, the switch to Intel will take more time.

Are there any reasons to not assume Apple will try to ride off the storm, introduce as little new PPC hardware as possible and continue milking the iPod market until the Mactels are here? Im pretty sure their finances can hold them afloat without introducing alot of new/innovative PPC products.

Oh, and while Im at it: Anything but a revolution when they introduce the iPhone will be a disaster for Apple. The models Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Nokia crank out these days, makes me anticipate a revolution from Moto and Apple.

_IF_ it turns out to be a Moto E398 in a new wrapping, Apple has committed public suicide when it comes to the mobile sceen IMO.

I wish someone could clarify if Apple scheduled a keynote and then cancelled it, or if the exhibitor assumed there was going to be a keynote, and then Apple clarified that a keynote had never been planned. All I could quickly find was the original AppleInsider speculation, which was just speculation:

"According to sources close to Apple, Jobs' staff have already arranged for his trip overseas. Judging by the preparations being made for the Paris expo, sources further stated that Jobs is expected to make at least one major announcement during his presentation."

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1222

Did an Apple webpage ever say definitely that there would be a Steve Jobs Keynote?

Hmmmm...... What's going on?

To me, this mean that the sept 7 event will be the MAIN event... I don't think Apple would have rented the Moscone Center just to co-present a new product that Motorola is the main creator... yes Apple did put the iTunes in the new phone but is that a real new thing since the first iPod came out ?

I think Apple will show us munch of stuff this week, all iPod related... new minis, the iPhone, new shuffle, maybe some thing new on the Airport express side too... but, this is not just a iPhone, for sure... so Apple did cancel the keynote to make more room to do a follow up of the sept 7th announcements... since this summer, Apple is trying the keep the press busy, really busy (iPod photo merged, might mouse), then the sept 7th, after, may be in october or november, there will be something new or a few upgrade...

To me, Apple is much more clerver than it used to be in 90's... they now seems to be very organized and reactive of market conditions... the momentum of the sales for Mac products is still high and they will make new announcement on the Mac side when the timing will be there (sales starting to deteriorate for example before Mactel machine - oct 2005 - jan 2006 time frame).

Steve losing his grip?

For the first time I feel like writing this...

Now it seems that Apple is REALLY giving a lot of attention to iPod and media crap, in detriment of the REAL DEAL Macs...

Rest assured, people...NO KEYNOTE = NO NEW MAC PRODUCTS.

The 7th September announcement will ONLY cover new iPod Minis, Shuffles and the Moto phone...so the Paris Expo will be MOST BORING show ever...trust me.

At least I haven't bought any tickets from Switzerland to France for that...oh boy! Where are those Pentium-smoking G3s of our heydays?????

WAKE UP, APPLE! POWER UP!

Is there any precedent for Apple renting the Moscone center for a special announcement? Have there been other special annoucements in the past where Apple has rented a special location, and if so, how did the size of the location compare with the size of the Moscone center?
