IMHO Steve could have gone on stage and show-off the latest development of OS X on a MacTel. Maybe even demonstrate an early build of Final Cut Pro orso (whatever is possible) to help the audience really believe that the siwtch to Intel is necessary.
He has done Keynotes at Paris before where his repetoire was hardly anything else but a repeat of another Keynote earlier that year.

This coming switch still is so controversial, that demoing why OS X on Intel flies, can't do any harm. The more people believing it to be better, the easier the transition will be.

Does anybody know if the Keynote was suddenly cancelled, or was the reservation of the scene mandatory, and Apple simply didn't need it....

"What exists: Low power G5s." Yes, the 970fx. We have those in the iMac already, not cool enough to run in a PowerBook. As for the 1.4 & 1.6GHz chips supposedly cool enough to run in laptops, although IBM announced them, none are availabl eto purchase by vendors (and they probably won't be for QUITE some time).

I definitely do agree with you on that. Especially with no supply guarantee agreement from IBM

"Dual Core G4s" Nope. Projected chip by Motorola. Not yet released (will it ever be? Motorola/Freescale NEVER respected ANY of their projections).

I disagree, in part. There are dual core G4s. the MPC7448 has already been demonstrated, since February. The EEMBC has been benchmarking them. I think they will be ready for mass production by October but it’ll probably be too late to see them in the PBs. As Yonah will probably hit the PBs next year…

"Dual Core 3+GHz PPCs for Microsoft" These PPC's are not Desktop compatible and they are not yet available. To make Them PowerMac compatible would mean making them more complex which means less speed and more heat i.e our current 970.

I also agree, in part. The PPC chips made for the Xbox 360 (a PC based game consol), still opperate on RISC instruction, yet a form of the Windows OS runs on them. Also, Microsoft already has a supply of those chips for their Xbox 360 release, slatted for this Holiday Season 2005. Unless Billy Boy decides to cancel at the last minute... So, I’d assume the chips are already available or else they wouldn’t be able to establish an inventory for the Winter release.

(side tracked)
Wait... it totally didn't click before... Windows running on a PPC?! I'm getting a glimpse of the future... Windows Vista update pack 2000 PowerPC native... Windows becomes more Mac-like... Mac on Intel... worms worms and more worms... scary thought...

"3+GHz PPCs for Sony". Nope, this is not a PPC in the classic sense, the cell is a brand new type of PPC cousin. It was tested by Apple before they decided to switch to Intel. The cell is not practical for desktop applications and it is slower thanthe current G5 at such applications.

Yes, very true.

I still think it would be nice if some of these great PPC innovations were equated to Mac Computers, like they used to be. That’s all. Great PPC products in the pipeline but not for Apple. :( It’s clear that Motorola/Freescale are more interested in the embedded chip market, and IMB (Edit: oops, IBM) is interested in catering to and making chips for game consoles, supercomputers, military etc. I’m a huge fan of the RISC architecture, I’m sorry to see Apple forced off the very architecture they helped develop. **sigh**

I have figured out what the Sept. 7th announcement will be.

The iSteve (TM). This robot designed exclusively for and by Apple does keynote presentations and can also double as a music player or cell phone. Options include:

• Adjustable Reality Distortion Field settings to affect the reaction of your audience, from 0% ("do we really need a Mighty Mouse?" or "Apple's doing pretty good recently") to 100% ("Mighty Mouse is the most coolest mouse ever!" or "Microsoft will fold in 2, 3 days tops!")

• Wardrobe comes in all-black, or black turtleneck with jeans.

• "One more thing" setting On/Off

• Variable "Boom!" rate, from 1 Boom! per minute (nothing exciting to announce) to 10 Booms! per minute (recommended only for the best keynotes)

• "Temper" setting adjustable from 0 (Zen!) to 100 (You're fired!)

• Can hold over 100,000 songs in AAC format, preloaded with over 10,000 '60s and easy-listening songs.

• Call anywhere in the world for free, thanks to special satellite hook-up with Cupertino. Bypasses silly cellphone network operators who don't want to strike a fair deal with Apple. No need to use iChat anymore to talk to Phil Schiller or Bertrand Serlet during keynotes.

The iSteve (TM) will be giving its first practice keynote at the Apple expo as part of the announced Q and A session. Since it is still in beta, they decided at the last minute to cancel the main keynote and confine iSteve to a short 10-min talk.

I WANT ONE!
How much is it?
Can I seduce a clerk, use his employee discount, and then um... un-seduce him?
I WANT ONE!!!!

My attempt at positive thinking is that whatever that 'great' product is; it's not ready for launch yet?

I'm willing to bet that this is the case - something very big ... didn't get done yet. I'll guess that contracts for content for videos via iTMS aren't completely in place. I'll still make a (small) wager on new PowerMacs for Paris.

Guys, put your weapons down, please...NO PBs, NO PMs, NO iBooks, NO nothing.

There is NOT gonna be any Mac-related announcement, period...I fear that Stevo is losing his grip and turning Apple Comp. into Apple Media...sad.

On the 7th we'll see just new iPods and the dreaded phone...this is all we've got.

The Beatles just gained control of Apple Computer and Ringo is making all the decisions now.

Was there any kind of event when the iBooks were updated?
Nope, neither for the last two Powerbook updates. The last time Powerbook or iBook updates were introduces at some kind of event was with the introduction of the 12" and 17" Powerbooks.

Coming to think, for the last let's say three years at least, no hardware updates which did not involve changes to the enclosure were introduced at events.
They might make an exception for Dual-core G5s, since they might be more than just a speedbump.

Now everyone just calm down…let’s all take a deep breathe. Everything is going to be just fine…

The 7448 is single core only. The dual-core G4 is called 8641D and was supposed to come out (or sample?) in the second half of this year and now has been pushed back to 2006.

i just want to buy a freakin' powerbook for college. its been hard enough convincing my parents that i need a 12" powerbook over an ibook, promising them that the new ones come out "in just a couple weeks".

So what do you think; buy the current 12" now, despite some irksome red text that reads "Don't Buy - Updates soon"? Wait?

And i dont want to hear another thing about the damn phone. Apple needs to be concentrating less on creating a product that allows some blonde bimbo to listen to ludicris while she's texting her 'peeps', and more on creating products that capture the imagination and respect of professional users. (a demographic that i, a user of final cut pro, soundtrack, livetype, and pro tools, feel that i am a part of).

I seriously don't get this.

You would think after such a major announcement at WWDC that Apple would want to show off how things are going. Make everyone feel okay with the transition, and even release some new hardware to keep people happy. Now we are looking at 2 keynotes in a row without a new product announcement from Apple. Not to mention some insight into what is in store for the Intel transition.

One more thing, at what point did updates for the Powermac line start happening only once a year? It has been so incredibly long since I have seen any "real" improvements to the G5. In fact, almost the entire system besides some minor processor improvements and some minor video improvements is basically the same system as when Apple released it over two years ago.

I can only hope that the new Intel switch eliminates these kind of problems.

The phone is being made by Motorola not Apple. The (small amount) of time spent by Apple on the phone is in no way detrimental to the progress of other Mac related products.

There is nothing wrong with the PowerBook. A new computer on your desk is worth far more than waiting for the next release. PowerBook not capture your imagination? What does that mean?!

HD iMac on sep 7th

Steve Jobs announced that 2005 was the year of HD last January. It means that nothing HD related is coming out in Paris.

I thought that this was supposed to be the year of HD too. But I guess with the transition from IBM to Intel, its taken the back row. But wouldn't it be great if on Sep. 7th, he announces the new ROKR, an HD iMac (I would get one that day!), and an HD Powerbook. That would be awesome. And, if he releases an iTunes style movie store, with HD content, that would be even better. Hey, I can dream can't I?

I don't want to rub it in, but why do you guys think Apple HAD to switch to Intel if great new PowerPC chips were about to be available to Apple?

Motorola is about to go from 1.67GHz with no L3 cache to 1.7GHz with L3 Cache.... WOW, 30mHz more and 2mb of cache!

IBM? Maybe dual core G5's before the 64-bit Intel Chip transition in 2007, but I doubt they can pull their fingers out of their nose fast enough to get them ready before Q1 2006.

They'll probably have to overclock and Watercool a mild G5 upgrade like they did with the 2.2 and 2.3GHz to make people think they had a 2.5 & 2.7GHz chip...

You go with what you got simple as that. If Apple have the chips they should bite the bullet and use them regardless of how small the updates may be. The last two years have been a nightmare and Apple can blame the chip makers all they want but they haven't helped. Their innovation has sucked and adoption on new technologies such as better GPU's etc is appalling. They can't even give the ipod a decent update anymore, just what are they doing?! I want BT for streaming, larger sizes not dropping higher capacities to skim a little more profit.

The 2.5/2/7GHz G5's were not over clocked nor did they require Watercooling in the same ways P4's don't. Current Intel desktop chips run far hotter than G5's, Apple did it to ensure we got quiet computers, blow enough air and they will be cooled quite happily but noise levels will increase.

Personally I don't think Apple would use dual core PPC even if they could right now. They are geared for Intel and seem blind to everything else around them. Place your bets now for how long into the Intel move it will be before things go off the rails whether it be poor chips, pirated software, no innovation, poor sales etc etc

of course a new computer on the desk is more valuable than no computer. but there is also a balance between having a newer/better model and waiting and having the current and the instant gratification of not waiting. if you knew a new powerbook was going to come out tomorrow, would you buy the current one today? i think not. but where should the line be drawn? 1 week? 1 month? till yonah in some quarter of 2006? honestly, im watching the seventh. then im watching paris. then ill probably buy before the 24th so i can get a free ipod with my student discount. (more accuratey, a 20gig colour for, like, $80 out of pocket)

when i say that apple should concentrate on products that capture our imagination i mean this: think back years and years ago to when you first saw the titanium powerbooks. think back to when you first laid eyes on the G5 on apple.com and realised the potential of its specs. Think about the first time you felt the movement of the display on the redesigned half-dome imacs. think about the times you said to yourself, 'oh man, if i had that computer, i could totally...' for me, at least, new macs often make me wonder about how i could use them to inspire my creativity.

If he was going to step down as CEO one day then less fronting for the company would be a way to ween us off him and listen to the Apple excutive.

maybe they could do one of those Apprentice style tv shows to find a replacement.

criteria 3: must like cats
criteria 4: preferably not prone to sudden changes of mind (to steady the nerves of the shareholders as they watch steve frantically spinning the wheel at the helm)

Maybe steve will step down just far enough to run the new iPod off shoot division! After all that's where the company seems to want to go.
