So ... no Quad PowerMac, faster PowerBooks or G5 Mac mini :(

"Water water everywhere not a single drop to drink..."
-Coleridge-

What exists: Low power G5s
Dual Core G4s
Dual Core 3+GHz PPCs for Microsoft
3+GHz PPCs for Sony

What doesn't exist: What's listed above for the PM, PB, and Mac mini.

What about us??? I want a PowerBook worthy of the “Power” title! I’m tired of Apple treating its loyal Computing crowd as Donkeys with the Proverbial Carrot dangling in front of our noses…

Maybe I’ll just buy a Sony Vaio 17” and install Tiger on it, instead of waiting around. Why wait for Mac, since next year it’s going to be “Intel Inside” anyway… okay, I just scared myself, anger gone, venting complete... didn’t mean the Sony thing… for now.

I don't want to rub it in, but why do you guys think Apple HAD to switch to Intel if great new PowerPC chips were about to be available to Apple?

Motorola is about to go from 1.67GHz with no L3 cache to 1.7GHz with L3 Cache.... WOW, 30mHz more and 2mb of cache!

IBM? Maybe dual core G5's before the 64-bit Intel Chip transition in 2007, but I doubt they can pull their fingers out of their nose fast enough to get them ready before Q1 2006.

They'll probably have to overclock and Watercool a mild G5 upgrade like they did with the 2.2 and 2.3GHz to make people think they had a 2.5 & 2.7GHz chip...

Funny cause last I checked Oulu, Finland lied some 2 000km north of Paris... On the other hand I guess this is how a "mobile city" should behave anyway :D

Yep, 2250km north-northeast to be exact - Oulu is where my home is.

This time I arranged my remote and on-site work so that I'd be in France during Apple Expo and I could sneak there for the price of 2x train & metro tickets. :D Now I'll just pick any convenient day to visit the Expo, maybe Thursday to avoid massive crowds. There's a lot to see anyway.

Back to the topic: I don't think the reason for cancelling the keynote is lack of product introductions. Apple has previously said they will not use keynotes for product introductions so much in the future as before. A normal and acceptable keynote in Paris would have been a repeat of WWDC keynote content + some other recent news + some iLife & other demos. What could be the reason to cancel something like that?

I have figured out what the Sept. 7th announcement will be.

The iSteve (TM). This robot designed exclusively for and by Apple does keynote presentations and can also double as a music player or cell phone. Options include:

• Adjustable Reality Distortion Field settings to affect the reaction of your audience, from 0% ("do we really need a Mighty Mouse?" or "Apple's doing pretty good recently") to 100% ("Mighty Mouse is the most coolest mouse ever!" or "Microsoft will fold in 2, 3 days tops!")

• Wardrobe comes in all-black, or black turtleneck with jeans.

• "One more thing" setting On/Off

• Variable "Boom!" rate, from 1 Boom! per minute (nothing exciting to announce) to 10 Booms! per minute (recommended only for the best keynotes)

• "Temper" setting adjustable from 0 (Zen!) to 100 (You're fired!)

• Can hold over 100,000 songs in AAC format, preloaded with over 10,000 '60s and easy-listening songs.

• Call anywhere in the world for free, thanks to special satellite hook-up with Cupertino. Bypasses silly cellphone network operators who don't want to strike a fair deal with Apple. No need to use iChat anymore to talk to Phil Schiller or Bertrand Serlet during keynotes.

The iSteve (TM) will be giving its first practice keynote at the Apple expo as part of the announced Q and A session. Since it is still in beta, they decided at the last minute to cancel the main keynote and confine iSteve to a short 10-min talk.

"What exists: Low power G5s." Yes, the 970fx. We have those in the iMac already, not cool enough to run in a PowerBook. As for the 1.4 & 1.6GHz chips supposedly cool enough to run in laptops, although IBM announced them, none are availabl eto purchase by vendors (and they probably won't be for QUITE some time).

"Dual Core G4s" Nope. Projected chip by Motorola. Not yet released (will it ever be? Motorola/Freescale NEVER respected ANY of their projections).

"Dual Core 3+GHz PPCs for Microsoft" These PPC's are not Desktop compatible and they are not yet available. To make Them PowerMac compatible would mean making them more complex which means less speed and more heat i.e our current 970.

"3+GHz PPCs for Sony". Nope, this is not a PPC in the classic sense, the cell is a brand new type of PPC cousin. It was tested by Apple before they decided to switch to Intel. The cell is not practical for desktop applications and it is slower thanthe current G5 at such applications.

Is there any precedent for Apple renting the Moscone center for a special announcement?
Yep. The iTMS introduction comes to mind.

Did an Apple webpage ever say definitely that there would be a Steve Jobs Keynote?
No, that was all extrapolation from tips posted at rumor sites.

Ahh, man! This sucks majorily, as I just "rejoined" the Mac community, I've been waiting for a brand new A W E S O M E product announcement; Guess I'll have to wait until MSWF (Or whatever it's called).

Oh well, I really wanted an updated Mac Mini; possibly a G5! :D

But, it looks like that's not going to happen; nor anything to happen.

You know, we're nerds, but I love it :D.

They are not overclocked. They are sold by IBM to Apple as 2.5GHz/2.7GHz G5s which require watercooling.

Oh my, this is very disappointing. I agree with previous posters who say that this gives more emphasis to the September 7th event... Apple doesn't want to hold a specially created event and then overshadow it with a keynote at which nothing special will be released.

I think (and hope) this just means something's brewing for September 7th... and it's not the damn phone.

Special Q&A - why?

Okay, can anyone say if this special Q&A session is out of the ordinary, or just something that happens after keynotes anyway? It seems like there's got to be a Q&A after any keynote, so that this is really just taking away the keynote, not replacing it with Q&A, but I may be wrong there.

If the Q&A is really out of the ordinary, the next logical question is: why? Between now and then, barring detached press releases, we've got the Sept 7th event in two days, and the Paris Expo keynote ... except that now we don't have the latter. So, something from Sept 7th is going to be generating so much discussion as to need a press conference two weeks later to clear up ongoing questions?

IMHO, I'm inclined to believe that Sept 7th holds a lot more in store for us than a simple and derivative cell phone product now with AAC/FairPlay capabilities and iTunes downloading. That's hardly a "here we go again" announcement. An Apple-led cell phone network? That would do it. Video download service? Maybe there'd be some questions about that two weeks later. Buying Creative so they can burn their patents in a ritualistic bonfire while sticking a Steve Ballmer voodoo doll with five-inch long needles? Yeah, I guess maybe that might need some 'splainin too.

On the other hand, if it's just dropping the keynote and keeping a financial-call-style Q&A where the answer to every question is predictably, "We don't comment on future products" ... well ... maybe not.

In either case, we'll likely know pretty well in two days what's up.

Steve Jobs is not going to embarrass himself presenting a crappy phone
hahaha the more embarassing moment is another year of no 3ghz  SHOCK. Apple has no big releases to present that won't be computer-related (all the iPod / iPhone stuff will be the 7th) so why present a keynote saying "oh did you see our color minis and new iPod socks :) " The truth is until the first batch of MacTels come out we won't see anything interesting that is an actual computer :( .

Except you have to realise Apple sells its products to the World, not just the states... although Apple seems to forget this simple fact.

This probably has something to do with Katrina, the economy isnt exaclty going to be at its best and as many companies found out in the weeks and months after sept. 11th it is a really bad move to announce or release products so soon after a disaster.

i doubt that this has anything to do with Hurricane Katrina..unless there was a secret factory down there producing Powerbook G5s that got wiped out! :p

Only two more days

We'll all know what's happening in two days. Just hang in there.

P.S.: maybe they'll announce a PocketBook with a Pentium M, 1GB RAM and an ATI X800/256MB, made by Sony, running 10.4 for x86... With a HD 4" WideScreen display. ;)

Holy MOTO, Batman, not IBM too!

Maybe Steve WAS going to announce Dual core PPC's in Paris, but IBM just (cough) couldn't (cough, sneeze) find any after that surprise announcement that Apple was dropping IBM for Intel. If IBM had done that to Steve, you can bet there would have been retribution. Maybe the shoe is on the other foot now?

New Products PLEASE

I'm really getting sick of waiting on the new ibook or G5 mac mini next tuesday rumors. All I want is Steve Jobs to get up on stage, release a new product that I may or may not actually need, have him tell me why I do need it, and then tell me when I can buy it. Something with HD would be nice, or a new black pb. I don't think I'm alone.

Yeah, thats potentially it.

I just wonder if its Apple again trying news ways of doing business. Maybe Steve after his scare wants more time to do his own thing, especially with the intel shift (dual boot Macs) putting the company on even firmer ground. If he was going to step down as CEO one day then less fronting for the company would be a way to ween us off him and listen to the Apple excutive.

I guess this means any and all iPod-related announcements before the Christmas buying season, will be coming on Wednesday.

I hope this means:

New iPod mini's featuring flash storage up to 8GB, smaller form factor, new colours & colour screen

Cheaper iPod shuffles

5th Generation iPod

...

I can dream can't i?

Do remember he is CEO of 2 companies, Pixar and Apple.

He is a busy man. He wants to have his own life, too.
Maybe he just didn't have time to argue with IBM, I don't know. And/or maybe he was busy doing things with the new, "iPhone" or whatever it's going to be called.
Just thought I'd say that
