Business Risk

What's the potential DOWNSIDE of doing a keynote and making an error?

What if Steve said something he shouldn't? What if a machine froze?

What if the legal department found some content that could be a liability ('forward looking statements' etc.)

Maybe Apple just balance the plus points of doing a live feed (bearing in mind that it's mostly the Apple faithful that are going to tune in) against the negative risks of screwing up, and that putting off potential switchers or inverstors.

Apple usually turns the keynote around pretty quickly and gets it on apple.com in a day or two. That's enough time to tidy it up and do any necessary editing.

These keynotes are highly rehearsed, and I'd more than expect that their content are run by legal before Steve gets up on-stage.

Also, I've seen technical problems on past keynotes. What they seem to do is have another machine in the background with a techie following along with the presentation so it's in sync with the 'live' system. Should there be a problem, the displays cut to the backup machine.

There's certainly no Microsoft-ish scrabbling about trying to get the thing to work again whilst the audience make no attempt to suppress laughter!

I think they don't stream the keynote anymore because Quicktime streaming technology really sucks. It's just poor and unreliable - but Apple isn't likely to pump out a Real or Windows Media stream. Of all the keynotes streamed in Quicktime (or any content on the web streamed in Quicktime, live or preexisting) I've always been disappointed by the quality - and often couldn't even get them to work.

Quicktime static content, on the other hand, i.e. - movie trailers - rocks my freakin' world and it's all I'll watch if it's available.

I wish they'd post the keynote in high def!!! That'd be really incredible.

I'd pay $1.99 to download it off iTunes :D

... that is, if they offered video downloads in Canada

Count me in, even at 4.99$CAD

Apple should take advantage of iTMS and sell Apple videos from it. In higher resolution, H.264... Am I the only one who thinks 320x200 is a joke? Why not 256-colors videos while we're at it?

I agree with this, i would also be down to pay cash to view!!

What I don't get is why Apple doesn't just allow us to download the Keynote (instead of forcing us to stream it or rip it). They'll end up providing the same amount of bandwidth (or less, since we'll be able to distribute it amongst ourselves with torrents or something), and people will be much happier with playback (especially dialup users, or people with unreliable/congested connections).

Content rights? Why does it matter if we get a hold of it? It's only more free advertising for them! And we're going to get it in the end anyway, so they may as well distribute it themselves and have full control over the content quality and the distribution (with copyright information and everything). :p

I'd like to stop by an Apple Store theater if they would project the Keynote presentation via satellite simulcast.

If not, then i'd pay real money to buy the Keynote after the fact from iTunes.

Merry MacWord SF everybody. 1/10/2006.

Wonder why they don't make all of those Keynote speeches available on the iTMS.
Would be cool on the iPod Video..... ;)

Very true. And Apple would actually get to keep all the proceeds, since they own the content. Im sure there are quite a few who would ante up 1.99 for the keynote, especially if they post it right after the fact. Old keynotes could be cool too, like when steve introduced the original iMac...

I always watch the Keynote later but all I really care about is getting the news as quickly and reliable as possible! Thanks to MR for doing their best to get the news to us!

Store streams?

according to the apple website, on tuesday january 10th 11 am (central time) there is a scheduled iphoto seminar in the theater, at both the woodfield and michigan ave stores. Does this prove no go in the stores?

Indeed it would considering OSX doesn't have a blue screen when it crashes that I know of:)

Bummer, but not unexpected. Any word on if they'll be broadcasting to the Apple stores?

They're not going to broadcast in the stores. Can you imagine what a mess that would be?

Priceless? heck that would be terrible. The last thing we need is xp - 10.5 comparisons... ;)

When is the keynote?

I thought it was on the 9th as most keynotes are the first day. Most sites are saying its on the 10th, but the conference website says its on the 11th.

From the MWSF website :

12/1/2005 - FRAMINGHAM, MA, December 1, 2005 – IDG World Expo today announced that Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, will deliver the opening keynote address for Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center January 9-13, 2006.

"Steve’s keynote is always a great way to kick off the biggest Mac event of the year,” said David Korse, CEO of IDG World Expo. "We’ve added several new features to this year’s event, and we’re working hard to make this the most entertaining and informative Macworld ever."

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialeventoct05/

that one was streamed at H.264 640x360, and I'm sure that when it's released we will see MWSF streamed at the same. not sure what the official bitrate is but it seems to range between 200-900 kbps depending on how much is moving. and that's damn high quality for a H.264 stream...

"Now, let's show you what this thing's like. Let's start from a cold bootup..."

*Steve presses the power button*

Black screen. Then, instead of *daaaah!*, we hear a *beep*. Screen shows:

AWARD BIOS - Phoenix Technologies Ltd. Energy Star compliant

Apple iBook 2000MHz

... all in a glorious 8x8 pixel terminal font.

*audience gasps*... then..

*beep-beep*

at this point, Steve introduces his special guest: Ellen Feiss.

The real reason...

Isn't it obvious? The keynote will be delayed and put out on QuickTime so that Apple's Final Cut jockeys can cut out the scene where Steve Jobs smacks his bare a** and says, 'Hey, Bill Gates, here's your MSN music store right HERE.'

I kno. I've been waiting for less time, but i really want to see powerbooks. I think the problem with updateing the iBook first, the iBook will be a dual core power-machine and the powerbook will be the snail of the Apple line. A mac mini update is almost definite so that will be faster. I'm not a pro user, so I don't mind using rosetta, but if the pros need it ppc compatible, still sell the powerbook for 6 months or something. A lot of people might disagree, but i don't kno what the pros want. I don't know how well rosetta will be, but if it is really good, this might be a bad idea. If it is slow, the pros might prefer that. I don't know. If there are any pros here, can u tell me what u think is better rosetta or ppc?

P.S. I have a powerbook now but am not a pro user. I know that if the ibook is updated, I could get it. But, i had a ibook, and i HATE the plastic, and it was really slow. I love the silver on the powerbook, and don't like the white.
P.S.S. I kno this is off topic.
