MWSF Broadcast Still Going to Show (Possibly)

Ok, no broadcast.

So where are the best places to hang out to get stuff live or just after the keynote - with plenty of detail?

I just contacted the Apple Store in Plano, TX and the girl I talked with said that their satellite has been down for a while and a satellite guy just came out and fixed it. Take it for what it's worth.

I can deal

I will miss watching the keynote, but that is no reason for Apple to get bad press. They stopped going to the NY/boston macworld to save money. so let's not get down on Apple too much, i mean look at the powerbooks we have been looking at them for a lot longer than we may have wanted (i.e. not refreshed in a LONG time) so having to wait till after the show to see all the good ness is not too bad in the big picture.

Have to

Yeah but the product pages are not as much important to me as is to watching the keynote. I am saving money to buy the rumored iWork '05 Productivity Suite See article . They better have a keynote presentation of Steve P. Jobs at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. I wonder how they get Steve back and forth from Apple Headquarters and to all of these presentations? Haha just kidding! I see new CEO coming in 6-8 years down the road. I really do like Steve and all of the Apple staff and support team and even the AASP and Retail people. The onsite people as well. I hope this rumor only is not true. The iWorks and the iPhone sound really cool. The headless $500 iMac is almost too good to be true but if it is released and a deal on a cheaper Apple display it will raise Apple Computers profits and really be a winner to the people who buy them and Apple of course. The only thing that worries me about the possible new iMac is that it could have potential problems finding a place for all of the hardware so it possibly could be a false rumor. Also the flash iPod sounds sweet too. Well maybe more and or less rumor stuff and hidden stuff could be released. Hey this could be a very special excellent Expo. A release date for Tiger would be very swell if it was soon and the educational discount and normal price stayed the same. Oh well any amount of money for anything of Apple's is worth it. So lets hope for a broadcast and count the days till MWSF. :)

Till then,

macman1988

skip Boston to save money - no, to save The Ego's® face

Oh come on, companies that are deep in red ink cut shows to save money.... How many billions does Apple have in cash and short-term investments?

Take off the rose-coloured glasses, please.

The Ego® got into a pi##ing match with IDG - and wouldn't back down even though it would have been better for the good of the platform.

"Saving money" was just an excuse...it sounds a lot better than "our emotionally volatile CEO threw a tantrum".

hmm...

i read on a website that they were going to have "insiders giving out live information"... does apple allow people to watch the keynotes with laptops on dishing out info? jw...

Pretty much yah - how do you think sites like MR or the IRC chat rooms get all their info, effectively real-time nonetheless? ;)

A live stream over the internet would be preferable, but I'd be almost as happy with a delayed re-broadcast as long as it happens within a few hours from the end of the keynote. But if I have to wait until the next day or longer then any real impact that could result from watching the keynote will be completely diluted.

However, the rumored (confirmed?) loss of the in-store broadcast seems very strange. It that happens then I'd say that it is certainly possible that the pre-event rumors and leaks played a role in the cancellation of the live broadcasts.

You probably wouldn't have to wait that long. For WWDC '04, for instance, (and I believe the U2 Music Event as well), the QT stream was available pretty much the second the keynote was done - you wouldn't have to wait days unless they do something differently this time.

Still though, there is something awfully nice about being to watch it as it happens, so hopefully the live stream will indeed take place.

I called the Apple Store in Short Hills, NJ yesterday and the woman I spoke to there said they weren't sure if they'd be doing it yet.

Blah, they were rude to me the last time I was at that store, I think I'm only going to go to the store on Knox from now on.

Well I guess my kids will be taken care of tomorrow after all :) I'm playing Mr. Mom and was looking forward for something to watch while they munched their lunch here on the east coast.

Oh well, I'm sure Mac Rumors stellar IRC reporting will be good enough.

But now my iMac is down and I'll not be able to watch it in 20" glory, just 12" glory on my wife's iBook. Sigh.

If you own Apple Stock, write to Investor Relations...

I sent the following email to investor_relations@apple.com:

I am very disappointed to learn that Apple has decided to forego making Steve Jobs's keynote available live through either a webcast or via satellite. This is invariably a yearly highlight for both investors and fans (and I am both).

Surely, Apple has rarely been in a better position to capitalize on its market buzz than it is right now. The lack of a web or satellite broadcast would seem to bespeak a lack of confidence the company's products and prospects, which is disturbing to me. Perhaps I should sell my stock Monday, if Tuesday is going to be such a letdown that Apple refuses to continue a long-standing tradition?

A fair letter, however with that threatening tone and silly rhetorical question at the end I'd be surprised if you receive anything back from Apple other than a standard auto-reply while the readers at Investor Relations have a good laugh at your note. I'm sure they're shaking in their boots if one investor is threatening to sell. ;)

If you're going to write notes like that and want to be taken seriously, I would try to make them sound a little more professional and non-threatening - just a tip.

I phoned the Apple store in London today, and after being put on hold for around 30 mins, I said to the woman:

'Will you be showing the Macworld Keynote on Tuesday Afternoon?'

She said "No, Keynote is on Wednesday at 3pm"

"OK, thanks"

After going at the Apple retail store page, I realised she was talking about the 'intro to keynote presentation'...grrr, i know it's not her fault, but still annoying.

I'm going to go by there tomorrow and find out - they should know by then if they're showing it or not..I hope!

Live feed never planned?

Ariel mentioned this article from AI on Friday that says that Apple never planned a live QT stream, just posting it for on-demand later. It seems like no one afterward is giving it much credence, wanting instead to jump on the "well you've always done it before" bandwagon.

That's coming from another rumor site, and for all I know, it may be Apple's attempt to use the rumor mill to counteract the - well, I'll just say it - whining that's been going on. However, it does seem consistent with the latest Special Apple Events.

I've hooked into live feeds before and found that once the Keynotes were posted for on-demand, they looked a whole lot better. Additionally, I never get disconnected and can back up quickly if I want to watch something again. Or skip forward for that matter, like when I've stopped watching at work to go home. :D

And in addition, press attending the Keynote have been told that they may not post anything until it is over ...

Good News

Well good news for me in Australia - no need to get out of bed at 4am to watch Keynote - watch it in luxury around 9am wearing a black polo neck, jeans and sipping a bottle of water :)

No live text reporting from keynote?

I guess I shouldn't spread wild rumors, but it's the so-called "(dis)information age" so take this for whatever it's worth (IMO, probably not much).

Well, I've found at least one thread (linked off of Think Secret) where there is a report that Apple is informing news organizations that they will NOT be allowed to perform any form of live reporting during the keynote. No blogs, no text, no wireless, etc. The speculation/rumor is that Apple may even have people monitoring the audience to make certain that everyone complies with this request.

Does anyone know if this was standard policy in the past? That is, no live reporting of ANY form allowed? I'm pretty certain they've always disallow video and audio recordings, but now not even text?

I find this report very hard to believe, but I guess it shows the level of wild speculation that is circulating prior to this year's MWSF keynote.

Here is the source of the original report:

http://www.keynoteuser.com/

They don't provide many details beyond what I've shown. So, no need to go to this site unless you think I've made this story up myself.

<snip>

This is very, very odd. It's just weird...why is apple doing this?

I guess we'll find out on tuesday. It's either something MAJOR or the keynote is so pathetic that they dont want people to be live updating.

I think it's gonna be option one.. :D

I'm still largely disappointed. This is just another blow after the pullout from the NE MacWorld. If Apple is on a cost saving kick, then I suppose that MWSF will be next. Probably the only safe thing is the WWDC, because Apple needs the developers to support their software. The East and West coast should be treated equally. What's good for the goose is good for the gander as they used to say.

I love this. I haven't even read the rumor, but your first line assumes that it is true. Why would you think that?

Even if Apple, or IDG, or Macworld, or whoever doesn't provide 802.11x support during the keynote, there are still other wireless forms of connection, i.e. cellular modems. They might not be as fast, but you don't need much for text. American law prohibits active interference of those frequencies, so Apple cannot do anything other than ask people to leave. And do you really think they are going to be walking around the auditorium looking over people's shoulders?

I don't think so.

I am going to bet on the latter, but since whatever I bet on usually loses don't take me too seriously. But, I remember this time last year everybody was going nuts with rumors the closer it got to MWSF '04 and it didn't live up to the hype.

And to be honest with you all I think last year's MWSF blowed. And if it wasn't for Tiger then WWDC would have sucked even more.

I really think Apple needs to redeem themselves, they can't keep riding the iPod this year. They need some groundbreaking technology and they need to start trying to expand their Mac-consumer base. People we need an iMac(circa 1998) type of product that will attract people to the platform. It's needs to be

1). cute(read this as having eye-candy)
2). cozy(comfortable to use)
3). functional(able to do anything you'd want it to do)
4). affordable(the bubble is long gone. In W. Bush's America the wealth is not as evenly spread out among the people, but I'll leave that for another discussion board)

And whats to stop the simple cell phone arrangement? Get a hands free setup and just talk about the major points throughout the whole thing. Its unlikely anyone would even know you were on the phone.

Maybe Apple shoud simply state it on their 'QuickTime What's On' page.

"Sorry folks, the live webcasts were fun but far too expensive".

I bet everyone would stop argueing then.

Is running a live stream really that much more expensive than posting it and letting people see it after?

Assuming the same number of people watch the keynote under both circumstances, wouldn't the same amount of bandwidth be used? Does anyone know the real answer to this?
