If they aren't going to update the hardware I think they really need to drop the (official) price. By quite a lot.

Because watching a movie got slower than with a newer processor?

I think Apple should open up the ATV for the app store... developers would help make that a revolutionary feature, like it was with the iPhone...

Totally agree. It seems such a no-brainer to open it up to developers.
What worries me however is that Apple seems to be putting resources into adding their own apps, which is resource that could be spent doing a store instead!
If they wait for sales numbers to increase they may miss the boat; better to take a risk, bite the bullet and open it up.... Apple don't seem to be taking any risks at the moment which i think you need to do from time to time to innovate!

you are completely disregarding that some people use ATV to stream local content. I do all the time and the things mentioned above would definitely help with that. I have ATV3 and it has serious buffering issues with ripped blu rays (I have a good number). more flash storage would certainly help there. I suspect 802.11ac should speed up local streaming too. not sure about gigabit ethernet - that might really be unnecessary. I don't use ethernet with my ATV anyway because it has (a completely retarded IMO) limitation that with ethernet connection active you can not stream over WiFi and I want to be able to stream from different sources.

My cable modem has 4 ethernet ports. I have my mini, my Apple tv and my airport express plugged into it.
Movies and music is all streamed from the mini and starts instantly because of the wired connection. But any other devices can stream and control the aTv over the wifi network from the express.
If your modem doesn't have ethernet ports, just get a 4 port router/switch and stick it between the modem and your express/base station.

Will this software update allow you to watch TV I the UK?
The freeview channels Like BBC and ITV?
Surely this is fundamental to the product or am I missing something blatantly obvious?

Think of it as the iPod touch 4. Most people are assuming the Apple TV eventually has an SDK released for developers. If that is the case, then updated internals would give people a better feeling about purchasing one for future upgradeability. I'm not buying one for this very reason. I don't want an iPod touch 4, that Applle had been selling up to very recently, which is way far behind the latest release, and is left in the dust.

Welcome to Apple's way of doing things. You like what we tell you to like. Any dissenting voice will be met with ridicule from the drones.

Different thinking for me as I don't need Apps for my Apple TV as "Hulu" and "Netflix" already exist on it. That's all I need as addition to the core functionality (iTunes Store & Homesharing). The Apple TV really is the only Apple OS device I'm free of any upgrade urge. Perfect media hub for my Apple infrastructure for very reasonable 99 dollars. However, if somebody is speculating on being able playing games on it in the future (with an open app store), you're correct, of course.

Can I ask a question?

I have an old 250GB Apple TV and one of my main uses is the photo screensaver. Not slide shows, just the screensaver.

I've been thinking about the new Apple TV, but I heard it doesn't display all of the photos you have on the screensaver. Something like the same 50 over and over again. Is this true? Or does it work just as well as the original ATV?

I was going to wait for a new model that you could hopefully sync around 60GB of photos with... No new ATV next week has me thinking about the current model again...

Does seem weird that they don't do this. It would add so much to the product.

Really understand that Apple doesnt need to upgrade the Apple TV. There really is no competition that can compare to how easy and good it works. All it need is just some software upgrade, and I'm happy!

I disagree. Apple TV should be much FASTER, basically instantaneous. Current UI is sometimes quite slow. Just look at Xbox One demos, it just feels much more responsive. That is what I want from Apple TV as well. Of course, streaming & buffering is limited by connection speed, but even that could be improved by much bigger local storage and intelligent pre-buffering (for example, depending on free space, the first minutes of all content you own or have rented could be stored locally, giving you instant playback and time for Apple TV to buffer the rest while you already watch/listen). All I'm saying, there is very much room for improvement (including from the software side, like opening Apple TV App Store).

Because it only has 8gb of internal memory, when using the screensaver each time is only a batch of photos. It is better than when it was first released, but it is in no way as good as the old Apple TV in this regard. I don't understand the issue with why it can't stream them all, but for some reason it doesn't.

Apple will not be debuting a new version of its Apple TV at next week's iPhone event, reports AllThingsD.

Is this a joke? You really think someone other then Apple can claim to know with 100% certainty what Apple will or will not do?

And here I was hoping Apple will release an apple TV 4 with:
A6 or A7 dual core
gigabit ethernet port
802.11ac
16GB inbuilt ssd for new app store
usb 3.0 port for external hdd

Why would you need gigabit?????

AllthingsD is nearly apple'a public speaker. So yes, they can

But it's booooring.

Define boring

Every company has a philosophy. When you don't like it, you buy a different one. Unless you live in North Korea.

Why not AppleTV as a Mac OS App so you can watch TV on your laptop?

Cool idea!

I just bought a Roku 3 box, and I gotta tell you.... it's superior to the AppleTV in almost every way. Like other review sites have said; there's really no point in buying an AppleTV instead of a new Roku unless you're really needing the "Airplay" feature to project from an iOS device or Mac wirelessly, or you have tons of paid content trapped in iTunes that you want to play to the TV.

With the Roku, you can add your own "channels" (apps, really) just by clicking on them in the online store, or even from the Roku iOS app (which doubles as a remote control for the Roku if you like). You get excellent apps like a Plex client for free, Pandora, Slacker radio, and much more. Many of the channels are just "niche" items (like one that features nothing but a series of guitar lessons a guy creates, and one that only shows exercise videos) -- but they're really cool to have available, and AppleTV lacks them.

You also have a small selection of games you can download for it, including game show titles like Jeopardy and You Don't Know Jack ... and Angry Birds comes with it free.

The included Roku remote can stream the audio to a headphone jack built right into it, so you can listen to shows without disturbing anyone else in the house, and it's motion sensitive (like a Wii controller) for the game titles.

And right now, Roku has them for $10 off, making them cheaper than the AppleTV. So as much as I like Apple products -- I ditched the AppleTV and doubt I'd go back unless Apple really steps up their game with them.

One of my favorite tings is the RF remote! The ATV remote is pretty, but being in the same room and having to aim is primitive after you've used RF.My system is in the next room from the kitchen and it's been great for me.

And though iOS remote apps are great for both devices,I don't use them much.

It is IOS 7

"Apple's Apple TV update will likely debut alongside iOS 7"

More than that. The new update is IOS 7.

The Apple TV we all want is the Apple TV that exists now. It will gradually improve, mostly with more contracts with content providers. It's slow but the hobby is growing and in a few years will be a giant. It will never be a big shiny new huge display.

There really isn’t any need for that. Mac OS is an open system. Any content provider is already free to develop their own app without sharing any revenue with Apple. Or to develop a web-based interface that’s multi-platform. And of course Apple already has iTunes for the content they sell.

Basically, it sounds like Apple is doing whatever software updates they need to do to support the new functionality in iOS7/Mavericks, and maybe a couple of other small and easy changes. This does not surprise me, though I was guessing we would at least see a small spec bump.

Why? Not because the aTV needs more power, but because Apple sometimes uses the AppleTV to test new components at a small scale before rolling them out to higher selling devices.

Also, for those holding out for apps– not yet. I think we are getting closer. The latest AppleTV is somewhat comparable spec-wise with the iPhone 4. Also, the capabilities we are starting to see for the Apple TV to pair with other Apple devices as a form of control seems to be a part of that plan (because the remote control sucks).

I think Apple is still refining the interaction model between user and AppleTV, and we won't see apps on aTV until they are 100% happy with that. I don't think we interaction will just be "control it with your iPhone", though I feel like that will be one option. Maybe paired with voice control and Kinect-style gestures? Maybe?
