Why use NFC when you can use the more widely available Bluetooth 4.0?? Think about all the iPhones that already have it?? That's million of 4S's already out in the wild plus the millions of "new iphones" they're about to sell this fall!!
Apple never does something until its better than what's already out there so instead of following the NFC tech that everybody seems to add to phones but noone seems to use, why not just do it with the low power Bluetooth 4.0??
That's just my .02

Bluetooth needs to be paired and doesnt support mobile payments, its not as quick. Different uses

Why do you guys insist apple must use NFC? NFC has not even taken off in the USA and is only used sparsely in japan.

http://www.engineering.com/Electron...gnArticles/ArticleID/4444/No-NFC-for-you.aspx

So far today I have been in three places that you can use you NFC enabled device for payments. I don't know what part of the US you live in but I keep seeing it emerge in more and more places all the time. Lets stop apologizing for Apple if they fall short once again and fail to enable the next iPhone with NFC.

Typical fanboys, if you don't have it and Apple doesn't make it available then you don't need or want it.

When's the last time you used NFC to pay for anything? Google wallet hasn't exactly taken off either.

Honestly that hasn't even been confirmed by Apply. Heck the new iPhone hasn't even been confirmed by Apple yet. It's all rumor and speculation yet.

That common sense logic has no place here!:)

Typical antagonist, assumes everyone's a fanboy. I never wanted it and Apple had nothing to do with my lack of desire.

----------

what common sense? So because NFC isn't used where he lives means it's not used anywhere?

I think he's referring to the "Apple hasn't confirmed anything" statment. But I am making an assumption. ;)

Edit: Let me add this, I see both sides to the argument. In my life, it wouldn't make a big difference. I've tried several times in the past to use my PayPass credit cards, but most of the time the terminal's were broken or the store just stopped using them altogether and preferred a swipe. Also, I didn't see much advantage to not swiping since I had my card out. But I can see how it would be a little better to not even pull my card out of my wallet.

Both sides should stop taunting each other with absolutes and be reasonable. It's going to be missed by many people, but I highly doubt it would drive sales in one direction or the other by much. Either way, we don't know what Apple's thoughts on the subject are and we certainly won't until the launch at the earliest.

Then you should educate yourself, find out whats it's all about and maybe get some hands on with NFC and maybe you'll see things in a different light. I have two NFC enabled devices and I can tell you it's great technology and I can see why theres a good future for it. It can only be a plus for the next iPhone, better to have and not use it than not have it at all.

Of course you never wanted it.....

Why do I need to educate myself if I don't care?? I can tell you that the utility of it in my area is very limited.

Edit: Where I have seen it useful is on the bus in Korea where I think they were about to start allowing it (or already allowed it) to store your transit pass account. But I don't ride the bus in Dallas and I really don't see a real need for it in my life at this time.

Dude I have had every iPhone in existence and my signature says Macbook Pro. The difference is that I can critique even the Company and devices I like. There's always room for improvement. I'm sure you would agree..stop with the assumptions.

You yourself should expect retaliation when using the fanboy term. You've been around long enough....

Edit: BTW, does the MTA use NFC yet? IF they do, then I may find I miss NFC when I move there Dec/Jan.

Would you two and all the other children on here just quit with this juvenille 'fanboy' name calling? Seriously, how old are you?

This thread is about NFC, there are those hoping to get it and those who are not bothered, each with valid reasons I'm sure. I see nothing to assume either party are particular fans of any particular OS. The same goes for almost any topic on this board, so lets talk about the technology, its pros and cons, the likelihood or not of it appearing on the new phone, and for the love of God, just grow up.

Sheesh

off the top of my head:
CVS
Old Navy
7 11
Mcdonalds
Gas stations

and so on....

You need to get out more

Thank god Apple doesn't doesn't take your needs into consideration when making products or we would be behind 5 years.

So what is this next phone going to be?
Just a stretched 4S?

Looks like once again, there is NO reason to upgrade.
Been waiting so long, hoping for something big to emerge.

I was thinking if the camera was something to shout about, then it might be a deal maker. Even NFC looked like that could be something worth upgrading over. But none of these things look like coming to pass.

It looks more and more like I got to wait another year.

For those who don't have iphone or an older 3, it ought to be great for you guys.

Just my thoughts. :(

Of all those places, the only one I would frequent is the Gas Station and as I said earlier, they seem to always be broken or just turned off completely. Edit: OH, and I don't usually see them on the pumps where I typically pay.

You need to chill out more and lose the attitude. I never said any of this needed to be driven by my needs. I was simply stating WHY I won't miss it and the fact that my lack of desire was not driven by Apple in any way.

NFC would be a waste of space. Why would you need NFC on a smartphone that is also equipped with Bluetooth and wifi, especially in iOS, a mobile OS that lacks direct device-to-device sharing capability in general and instead focuses on syncing to iCloud or a PC.

Because some of us live outside the USA, like in Japan for example, where NFC has genuinely taken hold. That's why some want it, including me.

I think they are going to do a lot of the same stuff with Bluetooth 4.0 without having to make the design sacrifices anandtech pointed out.

I wonder if Apple is choosing this path due to their Holy Patent War, especially as Google has a number of protected ideas in this space. So rather then get into a situation where (god forbid) they may need to cross license the use of rounded corners, they're going to reinvent the wheel as an ellipse and keep going scorched earth in the courts.

I'm an Apple fan, and I could give a damn about thunderbolt... You have the wrong impression lol. I don't get all of the 'Andriod fan' 'Apple fan' BS, all I see is 'I'm a moron for saying this' when I read that in posts. If you are intelligent then you know Andriod has good features, and iOS has good features. Galaxy S3 is a great phone I'm sure, I don't have one, but I know it must be based on features and sales, and the new iPhones will be a great phone as well. NFC is also a good technology, but it simply isn't ready yet, so if you are intelligent you know that is isn't a needed feature. If you are stupid then you will complain about it.

Cool story bro, but I think you missed the point of my post.

I have seen it on some LIRR stations, seems MTA are currently running trials. NJ Transit have it at Penn Station. Outside the US, NFC is everywhere.

Too bad Apple didn't patent the NFC concept.
It would have been accepted with great praise for being such an innovation!:D
Now that someone else owns the rights, its meh & not innovative...

I want it. A little. But I don't need it.

If it's in the next iPhone, I'll probably use it. If not, I'lll keep living my life, paying with my credit card, and then paying the bill at the end of the month. Apple can't stop me, and neither can you.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I go to some of those places. Are you saying they are not going to let me go there if I don't have NFC?
