Good call! I was looking forward to NFC payment via iPhone to replace my Visa wave credit card, but if Apple are going to take a cut, it'll be hard to get my local coffee shop to accept the iPhone as payment :(

It has nothing to do with Apple. This is not like buying something through iTunes...

I can see that. I should have clarified. Every card I use has the RF chip. It's just a matter of taking out my little wallet sleeve that has my card, tapping it, and I am done. It's easier than taking out the phone, loading the app, swiping, etc... Plus, What if my phone runs low on battery?

I guess I can see it as an incremental step forward. But it's #1,000 or lower on my top things that would stop me from getting an iPhone 5...lol.

There is no app needed...And its not powered by your phone. It's an RF chip just like the one in most debit cards.

this matters? because this is a real game changer?

Not a game changer, but a source of revenue for Apple. Myself, I wouldn't be likely to be enticed to use it. My iTunes bill can already be sometime too bizarre to understand (what with gift cards, and app store purchases, etc.). I recently had a dispute about the balance, and the Apple support person sent me a spreadsheet of the transactions on the account. I had a very difficult time following it because of the way they handle gift cards on the account.

But if the kiddies can swipe their phone, or iPod touch and make a purchase, well, that might seem more cool than pulling out their wallet and paying cash. And that means money for Apple. So you you better believe Apple wants this working. Whether or not it seems like a game changer to you or I.

Good for you, I however love paying for my Starbucks with my iPhone. One less thing to carry around.

It's only one less thing if it is universally accepted. Otherwise, you just don't have to carry around one of those season Starbucks cards. :)

On a tangential note, Starbucks service has tanked in Manhattan -- to the point where people stop going there and the stores are shutting down. Yes, a completely unrelated fact...

I m bored,NFC not coming in iphone 5 ?this is the minimum requirement that i want to buy the iphone 5 . Shame on you apple, let me tell you something apple, iphone 5 is **** ! Then I will rather switch from 3Gs to Galaxy s II instead of iphone 5 !

Seriously, why would I care about NFC on iPhone? I would rather see 64GB iPhone, A5 or any other hardware upgrade then NFC. Convergence really does little to benefit the consumer in this matter.

I do not disagree with the convenience. The markets you reference are the current "test markets" in the USA which is a regular practice of our financial system.

However you'll notice that none of those is controlled by Apple. There is a big difference.

I have nothing against NFC if implemented correctly.

How can you implement it incorrectly? It either works or not and is doen to what the consumers require!

Clearly this is the next thing to come and you can decide to use it or not.
MOBIL is trying similar stuff with Speed Pass for getting gas.

Just because US doesn't use it now doesn't mean it's not going to be included in an iphone.

The time we save by using NFC we can use to complain about Apple on MacRumors.

I'll just use my credit card, thank you very much.

That's great I'd rather avoid having to worry about having the right change for the bus or which ticket is right for me.

There are already stick on NFC patches I guessing what we are talking about is a chip that can talk to the phone, and use things like the screen to show me my balance, touch panel to enter pin instead of the shops keypad ( good luck setting up a camera to watch that), plus lots of other goodies that the could interact.

Tap into a train station and the phone could log in to a free wifi network. That gives me service updates tells me when my train is approaching. But also guessimate how full trains are letting me know that if I wait an extra 5 min to next train is emptyish.

NFC was the only reason why I was going to be upgrading to the iPhone 5 (and the only thing missing from the iPhone 4), dang it, now I have to wait until 2012 to upgrade.

boo Apple, the next iPhone is going to be an epic fail.

Are you being sarcastic?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if the next iPhone will be "an epic fail".

I, on the other hand, do not care if the next iPhone has NFC. I have the 3G S iPhone and looking at what other features it will come with.

I still think the iPhone 5 has a good chance to get NFC, for one reason: the physical size of the iPhone makes it a better candidate to include the feature.

The sheer size of the iPad 2 conspires against including NFC.

Here we go again:)

There are always people with unrealistic expectations and if Apple fails to meet them, they claim :

company slipping, going downhill fast, epic fail

and yet, they buy the "inferior" products Apple sells.

I have yet to see a post where one of these doomsayers comes back on and says:

I predicted an epic fail , but I was wrong.

Iphone 5 will be just fine with whatever features Apple puts in. It will be (AGAIN) evolutionary. (Sorry spec geeks and Wah still no FLASH))
A5 chip and hopefully 64GB, plus antenna issue resolved so we don't have another storm in a water glass.

That be pretty good already. NFC something HD and whatever they come up with . It's all good:) Millions will upgrade

The greatest thing would be if we can still make phone calls:)

I think many posts here are missing the point. The reason NFC matters is for the notion of a "digital wallet". It's not just the payment info that counts, it's what Apple can help the user do with it. Categorizing expenses. Accumulating reward points without the need to show additional reward cards. Speed up the lines at checkouts. Sell gift cards via app store. Enable people to email gift cards to their friends electronically. Incorporate electronic coupons. Think different.

You really don't need NFC or more accurately you don't use it for that. In Europe services like that are either implemented or tested in many locations. They are very nice but nothing to do with NFC just good old wifi and BOOM its there. Magical!

EDIT: Completely OT but I bet we will not see iPhone 5 in 2011. I'll put my money on "iPhone 4S" with A5, 64GB, same form factor, higher mega pixel, some apps only running with A5 and so on. 2012 will be the year of iPhone 5.

I can hear all the Apple haters now. NO NFC! Damn you Apple!!! This is like -100 on my list of things I hope the iPhone 5 has. WHO CARES!

Just a thought.........
We have some local convience stores that knock off 10-15 cents per gallon of gas if you use their (debit) card linked to your checking account bypassing the exhorbant Visa/MC fees.
Apple could do the same thing through Itunes and NFC if they charged half as much as the CC companies.
This could be a huge boon for Apple profits as well as saving retailers money, some of who could pass on some of the savings to consumers if they choose.

Yes, thank you!

I really think this would be cool... but not a killer if it's not there yet. I know from what I've read it is a bit of a mess as to the standards and it's not like Apple to take on technology that's not stable (stable as in not changing).

But we'll see... again.. just a rumor, so not solid until the guy in the black turtle neck says so. :)

NFC seems like a dangerous technology to adopt. Especially if your phone gets lost or stolen. Add that to the fact that there is really no widespread adoption of NFC in the US yet. Not really a selling point for me, and I'm willing to bet it's not either for most of the general public.

BINGO! People only want it because they think it's something Apple is, or was planing to add. I'm not sure if many people really understand the need or want for such technology. OH, and NFC in the iPad? Almost as silly as chastising Apple for low quality cameras in the iPad. It's a tablet computer, basically a keyboardless laptop, no one wants to be waving a 9.7" device around everywhere they go to pay for purchases.

I hear it's already introduced in Poland.

They are waving 27 " imac s in front of cash registers.
Somebody got hit in the head and the first law suits are on their way.

Hard to establish new technologies!

My debit card from Barclays has NFC capabilities as well as Chip and Pin. I've had the card for over 2 years and never used it once for a contact-less transaction, so the lack (or otherwise) of NFC on iPhone 5 won't bother me one iota.

Unfortunately this isn't possible since iTunes accounts are tied to credit cards. Visa/MC and the rest get their fees from every iTunes purchase you make. In the case NFC you would have the fees from Visa/MC and the possible fee from Apple. However, I have very hard time believing that any retailer would be willing to accept this.
