Excuse my ignorance, but when you say a Genius appointment, does that mean you’ve got to go to a store? Or can you do it all over the phone? Fortunately my HomePod updated okay, but I don’t have any local Apple Stores near to me so it’s not easy for me to get to the genius bar if I needed.

Genius appointment means going to the store. But that's not the only way. You can also talk to support over the phone or iMessage chat. If the resolution involves replacing the HomePods, they will mail new one(s) to you and you will mail yours back.

There’s different options. Genius appointment means coming to the store but there are options for Apple to ship you homepods
and you return the affected one. With AppleCare, you can do an
express replacements where they overnight you one and then you return the one you have. Without AppleCare, they send you a box for you to return yours then they send you that one back fixed or a replacement.

I spoke to Apple support on the phone, I was offered two options visit the store or send the HomePod for service via the post, it’s easier for me to visit the store....

I was told the only option is to get refurbs. That's it. I'm out Apple. The stores and online are of no help and think offering refurbished units is deemed acceptable. Disgusted

Yeah that is how Apple runs..after 30 days you get a "Certified" one..which comes in a white box, its refurbished, they just call it certified so it sounds cute but its a refurb

Wow, guess having dental surgery the day the updates came out saved my HomePods from bricking! I hope they fix the problem soon and replace/repair all the damaged ones quickly.

So if you were go to an Apple store or AASP like Best Buy, they would only give you a refurb? What the hell is the 14 pin connector at the bottom below the silicone pad for? I really not get a refurb because I spoke with Apple support yesterday and they said replacements are on the original warranty of your original HomePod purchase (unless out of warranty). I had a bad experience with a refurb iPhone 7 from the Apple store last year and it caused me all sorts of headaches, the original device was out of warranrty when I got the replacement.

This is outside of warranty on some. And not on others. I have no idea which is which. There are nine acquired over time.
I’ll never trust Apple software again

Is 13.2 safe to download for the HomePod now?
Is it back up now? Last I checked, a few hours ago, it wasn’t even available. Apple pulled it after this bricking fiasco.

Edit *** I don’t see it available for mine in the Home app.

Would it be worth speaking to a lawyer about? 9 Homepods plus tax is no pocket change. And I’m assuming a few of them were purchased before the price cut. I’m angry for you. In the past year, Apple had to replace two iPhone XS’s, One iPhone 11 Pro, an Apple TV 4K, two pairs of AirPods, an Apple Watch and now my AirPods case isn’t wirelessly charging out of nowhere. Absolutely disgusting that they charge this much for what’s turning out to be crappy hardware and the software is apparently no better.

It’s not. And Apple for those of us with bricked units are now having to send our units back for repair and no replacement. I’m completely done with this garbage speaker and anyone that asks going forward will know to stay far and clear. going to try and invoke my credit card protection and get documentation from Apple on the need for this to be replaced.
Never have I been so irritated by a company and there be no accountability. Their software and support in so many aspects has taken a huge nose dive. Cannot say enough how irritating all nine being bricked by them suggesting a reset is.

Why would they need to replace your HomePods? If they are able to fix the software issue, why would they replace the hardware?

They cannot fix it without shipping all 9 back and forth. Add in carrier shipping damage risk, they aren’t protected like from the factory. I speak from experience in this regard. There is no service port on them that the end user can plug into. It’s a bad design

Isn't Apple sending you boxes to ship them back in?

You don’t really get -9- of something without liking it, and while frustrating your making it sound like this is the first time it’s ever happened to a device after software update (it’s not). Apple and others have bricked far more important devices by accident in the past, it’s why a lot of macrumors users will wait 48-72 hours before installing new software. It seems like the best option would be instead of flipping out is to work with Apple, get your devices fixed, then in the future take this as a lesson not only when updating but when purchasing if it affected you as much as you state.

If your that done sell the in box refurbished ones they give you. Apples refurbished products are like new and most people online will be willing to pay near top dollar for one. It doesn’t put too many off to hear it’s Apple certified when purchasing.

They have indicated that yes, but the top of the units is plastic and the way these devices get handled in shipping by UPS or Fedex isn't exactly delicate. And EVERY single time I've had a repair done by Apple it's come back damages w/out exception. 27" iMac had the foot ground into, the screen scratched up, and more. iPhone with a scratched screen. It seriously makes one wonder what is going on there.

My point is that some customers go to lengths to take care of the stuff they buy and when a manufacturer, apple in this case, are haphazard in thee software they push out and create these kinds of issues it becomes more problematic as it changes hands. At any rate, I've attempted to give them the chance to rectify it and will go about it however I need to get 9 whatevers working again and then will be selling all 9 off at a loss.

The damage is done, the trust is broken with them. I'm sorry really has no value in a situation where actions are what speak. There are just many other software issues too from iOS in how that started, the current state of iPad OS and the screen aspect ratio is not working right on my two iPad Pros 3rd gen. It's all software and when looking at the picture in whole it says what kind of quality is coming out of Cupertino. It certainly isn't the kind that made me switch from MS to Apple 15 years ago. But is definitely the kind that may make me switch back. Apple can have their services strategy all they want, but there is too much trying to be done with too little in too short a time frame and I think all would agree HomePod had a great potential and Apple squandered it. This simply is my exit ramp since I've had to unplug everything from my media etc. It won't be getting hooked back up again.

Like I said, keep the replacements in box and they’ll sell for near full. (10%’discount maybe)

That's what I'm banking on. And yes I really did like them hence I got this many and no it's not the first time I've had a brick. But the way the bricking happened in doing just a factory reset is indicative of the level of passiveness occurring internally with their development.

Good, It seems like your getting a handle on the situation. I don’t blame you. I went through 10 iPhone 5’s and had to take a break from Apple for a while. Sometimes companies really burn you.

They really do sadly. It's going to take a long time for any kind of trust to be rebuilt after iOS 13. In many ways this looks like the beginning of a John Skully Apple in where Tim is driving things. Again, it's the merging of great hardware and software that made and established the company. His formula is services and that is meaningless if the other two aren't stable, which currently they are not. Earnings call today will be interesting

If I had 9 HomePods, I think I'd have updated one of them before updating the other 8, just to be safe.

Please read the basis of how the issue is occurring before commenting. The update doesn't brick them. It's restoring them to default after the update is complete. Apple Music was down so it didn't function. Support wasn't aware and said to factory reset them all. That is about as safe a thing as you can do with a device as it doesn't rely on outside connectivity.

Speak to a lawyer about what? Christ on a bike, you Americans like suing the out of everything

It’s an incredibly bad situation, as far as something so completely unimportant as a speaker goes. No it shouldn’t have happened, but it has happened. Apple are dealing with it and replacing bricked units. I couldn’t care less if they are refurbished as long as they are as immaculate as mine.
