Someone tell me what is wrong with this:

So before annoucement, and even during it by the sounds of it, some at&t stores say they will have an allotment of phones for walk-ins. Now they will not be selling them until Monday.

But if the stores were prepared to have phones for walk-ins, does that mean that they were not aware of how many phones they would be getting in?

You'll all excuse me if I decide not to simply trust the word of a brand new forum member who goes by the name "Italianmobster" ... All he has done so far is reiterate information that can be found online by anyone willing to spend 5 minutes googling. I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe he actually works in at AT&T store.

His continued admonishments to stay home and avoid the lines sound like one young man's ploy to ensure that nobody else is camping in front of his local AT&T store when he shows up Thursday morning to claim his own phone.

Ok, but the problem with your logic is that the person who works for AT&T in OKLAHOMA would only be impacting folks going to AT&T store in that state. How does what he says avoid me having a line in NY? As if.....

My ATT store is saying the same thing as the press release is.

Ok. I am Apple and I know I will have only 600k phones for launch. Then why the frak they did not set their damn computers to let people only buy 500k phones so they would have 100k for walk ins...I am no programmer but is it THAT hard to set your servers so they give SOLD OUT message after 500k phones are pre ordered?????

1) Because they want people to pre-order?
2) It creates more buzz and demand?
3) They don't care about walk-ins on release day?

1. People did pre-order.
2. Even if they set 100k phones for walk-ins it would NOT reduce buzz and demand
3. That's dumb and gives them bad rep IMO. Everybody knows how crappy they handled pre-orders AND now they cannot do walk ins at all because of lack of planning.

Overall= good device and engineering but horrible planning&operating skills.

Wow

Well...

This completely changes my strategy.

I will now be going to the Apple Store in the Mall of America. I just got off the phone with the Manager of the store and he said the Mall will be opening the doors at 6 a.m. He told me that as long as I got in the mall doors in the first wave of people at 6, I should be good.

I wil be showing up around the Mall at 2 or 3 in the morning. Then about 4:30-5 get out of the car and head towards the mall entrance. Then at 6 I will be sprinting like Carl Lewis to the store. My Crazy Uncle will have to find me when he catches up.

As much as this changes plans ( an hour and a half one way instead of 30 mins) I am pumped to experience the Launch Day at an Apple store, in the nations biggest Mall.

Apple and AT&T created the greatest thing ever.

Black Friday in June.

Without discounts.

If I go to Apple as a walk-in on Sat or Mon. Will I be able to get a iPhone 4? Does anyone know if they get more phones daily? Id rather just wait out the initial rush..but i want one before i leave Cali :)

also Im already with AT&T and elig for an Upgrade..should be able to get it for the $199 price right?

thanks guys

anyone?

I work for AT&T. I said in an earlier post that I'm not sure how Apple does it actually. I know at AT&T we can do what you're trying to do with no problem. Apple in all actuality CAN sell an iphone without activating it but I don't think they like to (their policy may state that they can't, at AT&T we didn't used to be able to but we can now). I'd say the best bet is telling Apple that you're getting it as a gift for a different number on the account. Since the new Iphone 4 uses a Micro-Sim card they MAY allow it, but I'm honestly not 100%. I know 100% for sure that at AT&T it's no problem whatsoever.

I'm in the same boat also. My mom's line is currently up for an upgrade but mine is not so I'm wanting to do an upgrade swap also. I called at&t and they said that yea its no problem, but i just got off the phone with an employee at our local apple store and he said that they cannot do the swap at the store but i can do it at at&t which i already know. I also asked if they can sell me the phone w/o activating it and he said NO, they cannot do this. What got me is even if i activate it at the apple store, could i still change it over to my line since it's already activated?

I thought that ATT stated that all iphones that were reserved at the store during pre order had to be picked up on the 25th, Friday. If this is true then there will be nobody at the store on the 24th. No phones available for pre order pick up and no iphones available for walk in pickup.

I wish that was the case. Me telling a few people on a message board isn't going to stop lines from being absolutely gigantic though. I've worked for AT&T for 2 1/2 years. Nov. 5 2008 was my start date. My agent code is RG720T. I can't give you anything else. If I had my badge on me, I'd post a picture but I keep it in my locker at work so I don't forget it. I don't expect everyone to believe me. I'm just trying to help explain the situation and let people know what to expect. I originally just came here to talk about Apple and technology in general, but since I work for the company helping cause all this commotion, I figured I'd help out.

If I was ploying to make sure no one is camping out on Thursday I'd be s*** out of luck no matter how much I posted. I can't even buy a phone from my own store because if a customer recognizes me I get in trouble. I work at 71st and Memorial in Tulsa Ok (The busiest store in OK). I'll be going to a different store to pick mine up on June 29th. A few co-workers and I were planning on getting the phone on June 24th and then going to work to sell since we weren't scheduled until the afternoon. So much for that. As of now I'm scheduled off for June 29 so I hope that holds true so that when I lose sleep from staying up all night, I'll be able to gain it all back instead of having to work.

Could you please post the email? Or would you lose your job?

Actually I would lose my job. It's proprietary information only, but the email that others have been posting from AT&T's website is the same thing. I'm actually off today. People from work have been texting me. Because of this stupid mess I have a 9:30 pm conference call too. Apparently customers are pissed and have been coming in asking about this all day.

You should be able to get it for the $199 price. Here in Oklahoma the Apple store seems to have a TON of iphone's in stock on release day and they get shipments every day (it seems) for the next few days after. With you being in California, I can't speak for Apple or for how they'll do it there, but I assume if that's how the shipping is here in OK then in California you'll have just as much if not MORE stock than we get here.

wow so many people complaining that they can't wait in line. AT&T can't sell phones to walk ins if they don't have them.

Everyone is blaming AT&T why doesn't Apple get some blame, they are the ones producing the phones and allocating them to their retail outlets.

I know june 15th was a diaster and both companies are to blame, but its not the end of the world if you didnt get a preorder, you can still wait in line next tuesday. I know its frustrating believe me, I would love for them to all be on the same page but thats not gonna happen. We just got to deal with it.

I was fortunate to get a preorder but im still not holding my breath that i will get mine thursday

You pretty much said what I've been telling customers and friends bombarding me with questions. Apple is just as responsible for all of this as AT&T is if not more so. They're the ones who allocate who gets what when it comes to their products. If they don't give us enough phones to sell to the walk-in customers then we don't have enough and there's nothing we can do. We can't magically just make phones appear.

Yes you can. You'll have to buy a new micro-sim card though. They're sold for $15 (not free like the current sim cards). You'll have to get a free (regular sim card) for the persons line that you upgrade, and then buy a new micro sim card to put in your iphone with your number attached to it. A pain in the butt, but an easy fix. The $15 thing is what bothers me. Apple should be able to sell phones without activating them, but they're so worried about people selling them overseas and what not, that's why they don't allow it. I do know that AT&T will though. We do it all the time at my store.

I thought that ATT stated that all iphones that were reserved at the store during pre order had to be picked up on the 25th, Friday. If this is true then there will be nobody at the store on the 24th. No phones available for pre order pick up and no iphones available for walk in pickup.

The original email about that said that just because you pre-order your iphone doesn't mean it will be there on the 24th and could come on the 25th or later. Because of that though, our store manager said that to avoid all of that any iphone we were upgrading or doing an activation on we would just ship to their house (no in store pickup) unless they were doing an exchange from their current phone they just got within the last 45 days or had only a PO box for a shipping address.

I called my local AT&T store 3 hours ago and they told me they would have the new iPhone on the 24th on a first come first serve basis.

The manager must not have got the memo.

All 3 prior Iphone launch days we've NEVER been told how many phones we're getting. All 3 years the store I work at has got the most. The 1st year we got 120. The 2nd year we got 120. The 3rd year we got 100. They already don't give us NEARLY enough that we need. We always sell out within the first 2 hours and then do pre-orders all day (it sucks). So no, we actually don't know how many we're supposed to get and that's why just today we're announcing that we won't be selling them to walk-in customers on Thursday. Apparently we're getting none until late monday night or early tuesday morning.

AT&T Statement on iPhone 4 Availability

Dallas, June 22, 2010

AT&T is on-track to deliver iPhone 4 to customers who preordered the device on June 15. We look forward to offering iPhone 4 to all other customers beginning Tuesday, June 29, when it goes on sale in all AT&T sales channels.

Here are a few guidelines for customers buying iPhone 4 from AT&T:

Preordered for home or business delivery: iPhone 4 will begin arriving this week for customers who preordered. We'll send an email when each order has shipped.
Preordered for store delivery: AT&T retail representatives will begin calling customers this week to let them know their iPhone 4 is available for pick up in store.
Retail purchase (no preorder): AT&T plans to have iPhone 4 inventory – available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last – on June 29 in its retail locations, at www.att.com, and in business sales channels. As inventory sells out, AT&T will offer the convenient option of purchasing iPhone 4 and having it delivered to a home or business or an AT&T store. As always, customers will receive an email once their order is placed, and again when it ships.
To help customers stay up to date on iPhone 4 activities and important information, AT&T will post a series of videos beginning early this week at www.facebook.com/att. The videos will be informative and packed with customer-friendly tips and instructions around order fulfillment, iPhone 4 activation, inventory and – importantly – the new MicroSIM unique to iPhone 4 devices.

Let the Apple Store Mayhem Begin!!!!!

Thank God, i pre-ordered my iPhone 4 and it was shipped yesterday. I hate long lines especially the ones at the apple store, last year it took me 3 hours to get an iPhone 3GS. I reserved a 3GS at the apple store last year and there were people showing up with no reservation and getting in before i did. That pissed me off. So when Apple says the phones are sold on a first come, first served basis, it makes you really wonder if they do really reserve the phone for you without a deposit to hold it.

Italianmobster:

I currently have an ATT smartphone w/ unlimited data and text, my contract expires in November 2010

my eligible upgrade for the iphone at their best pricing is not until July 12, 2010, however i reserved an iphone at an Apple store, is there any chance they would be able to give me the best pricing a few days earlier? I was told over the phone by an ATT rep that they should be able to, but he didn't sound that credible. I know that if I walked into an ATT store I can probably be able to talk them into it giving my bill/history, but can an Apple store do the same thing?

People keep saying I called the AT&T store and they confirmed they will have phones on the 24th. Why on earth would you believe an AT&T rep at a store or over the phone?!?!?!?! They are the most uninformed company ever!!! I think this process makes complete sense!! Why overload the store or severs at the same time with pre-orders and walk-ins? Have you people not learnes by now that apple never has enough of what there selling right away. If you didnt go to an AT&T or Apple store early on the 15th then you ****ed yourself here! How dod yall not know this iPhone 4 launch wasnt gonna be this crazy?

Yeah I called Apple AGAIN today just to confirm that I am in the system to pick up my reserved phone and everything was still a go, but now I'm wondering if bumpers will be available that day. I want a white one....wouldn't that be something if a few white iPhones showed up on launch day?!!

I know the i4 is the biggest iphone yet, but..

Is it possible that since the pre-orders this time around toppled the past number of pre-order, the lines won't see much of an increase? Just a thought.

I for one will be at the Mall of America (which opens its doors at 6) around 2:30 a.m. I talked to the Apple Store Manager (opens at 7) and he said the Mall obviously knows about the launch and will likely not hassle people too much about getting there early.

I assume each Apple store will have incredible amounts of phones, and having it be the Mall of America, they will have as many as anyone. I dunno. The Manager said if I get in the Mall in the 6 a.m. wave Ill be fine. I plan on it :)

I'm sure that the majority are going to disagree with me, but I think that this is a wise decision on AT&T's part. In doing this, they are drastically lowering their chances of the system crashing as well as making the people who worked vigorously at getting their preorders in happy. I would be pissed if I found that I ordered my phone nearly two weeks in advance and would not receive it until days after launch, whereas some guy who is willing to get up early and line up has a better chance at getting his on day one. If you didn't preorder, then go to an Apple store, and if that doesn't work, then wait another five days. I'm sure that you'll survive.
