You SHOULD be able to do that, but I'm not sure how Apple dictates that kind of stuff. I know on the first 3 launches of Iphones we activated them right in store, but we would run in to problems for people buying them as a gift. If I were you I would tell them that you're giving the phone as a gift and you need to activate it at a later date. Again, I'm not sure what their policy is on that, but I don't think it should be a problem.

Cool, I can only hope that is the case.

No, the transfer I was talking about is to do with eligibility and getting the discounted 199/299 (16gb/32gb respectively) on a new 2 year contract. If you're on a family talk plan and have a line that is not eligible for the discounted price and have another phone that is, you can transfer that eligibility from one line to another.

I was a little confused on what you meant by doing a "transfer." Apple still can't do that for you. We don't actually transfer the upgrade availability we just upgrade the line that is eligible and then switch the equipment to whichever line you're wanting to use it on. Apple CAN'T do that still. AT&T can. So get your Iphone at Apple. tell them you do NOT want it activated at that time because it's a gift for the person. Then take it to AT&T and let them know you want that Iphone activated on whichever number it is that you're wanting it activated on. Very simple really, should only take a few minutes once you get done waiting.

Sweet, thanks for your helpItalianmobstr7...

We extended the return policy from 30 days to 45 days basically. So some stores were still selling Iphone 3G until we ran completely out of stock. If you purhcased ANY phone with AT&T within the past 30 days (as long as it was before we put them on final sale on June 7) then you'll be able to exchange to the Iphone 4. Only problem with that is you had to pre-order and iphone 4 to even be able to exchange. We won't have any extra inventory on June 24th unfortunately. Just phones that were pre-ordered and sent to the store for pick up or exchange.

:( I bought an iPhone 3GS two weeks ago, and I didn't preorder because I called the Regional Sales Manager about exchanging it and he told me there would be iPhone 4's available to exchange on the 24th. Will I not be able to exchange on the 24th?

Unfortunately not. We were expecting to have some stock on June 24 but as of today we found out we will not have stock until June 29. The only phones we'll have in stock June 24 will be for people who preordered iPhone 4's whether it was to exchange their old phone or activate a new one. We WILL be able to process your exchange on June 29th now. Sorry for the delay. I knownits frustrating. It's frustrating to employees as well.

I always thought Apple HAD to activate it at the store before you left. That's what I read here too.

If you can just get it and walk out with it w/o activating it, that'd be great cause I'm trying to do an upgrade swap with a friend who is eligible to upgrade.

I didn't catch if you worked at Apple or ATT? Thanks!

I work for AT&T. I said in an earlier post that I'm not sure how Apple does it actually. I know at AT&T we can do what you're trying to do with no problem. Apple in all actuality CAN sell an iphone without activating it but I don't think they like to (their policy may state that they can't, at AT&T we didn't used to be able to but we can now). I'd say the best bet is telling Apple that you're getting it as a gift for a different number on the account. Since the new Iphone 4 uses a Micro-Sim card they MAY allow it, but I'm honestly not 100%. I know 100% for sure that at AT&T it's no problem whatsoever.

Thank you! I was really hoping ATT would have it on Thursday but I guess not.

I just called my local AT&T and the manager of the store verified that they will have iphone 4s in stock on the 24th regardless of the article that was posted on their site and he said everyone who waits in line that didnt pre-order gets theirs on a first come-first serve basis.

***this June 29th stuff is BS everyone call your local AT&T store to verify!!!***

No problem. I was hoping we would too. I wasn't scheduled to work until 2 so I was going to a different store than the one I wok at to get mine. So much for that now.

mobster, I called my local at&t authorized retailer, and they said they read the release, but will still have phones for walk ins. The manager said it might be because they are just an authorized retailer, and not an actual at&t store. What is your take on that? Would it make sense?

It's not BS. I work for AT&T. The email sent out is legit. Have fun standing in line on the 24th and leaving empty handed. We will not be selling iPhones to walk-in customers on June 24. June 29 is the day for that.

Wow.

That's total crap.

Thanks to AT&T's servers, not all of us could *get* a pre-order.

They didn't save any stock for anyone who actually is willing to sit in front of their god awful stores for hours upon hours in the morning?

Blame Apple, too. It's their stupid decision to put pure greed over customer experience by resigning their deal w/ the devil (AT&T) if they (AT&T) become the exclusive iPad carrier. Thanks, Steve!

I guess it's possible but here in Oklahoma AT&T non corporate retail stores aren't even allowed to sell iPhones. I'm not sure how it works state by state. I find it hard to believe they would allow agent stores to carry iPhones and not corporate stores given the lack of things that a non corporate store can do. If he says they've got them you can try but I'd just warn you to not be surprised if he backtracks his claim tomorrow or the morning that you go upnthere. Corporate stores here aren't even opening early any longer. Were opening at 9 am like usual on the 24th.

Ok, thanks for the information. It's in Illinois by the way, and I bought my original 2g there a few weeks after launch, so i'm gonna have to hope everything goes like they said.

Yep, the only thing I can think of is just that they're not corporate and that's why. Try and call again tomorrow just to make sure things go as the manager said. I hope you get your phone! If I don't work early on the 29th I'll be getting mine!

Yeah the stores I called here in TX we just authorized dealers not corporate stores, and they swear up and down that they will have them.

You'll all excuse me if I decide not to simply trust the word of a brand new forum member who goes by the name "Italianmobster" ... All he has done so far is reiterate information that can be found online by anyone willing to spend 5 minutes googling. I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe he actually works in at AT&T store.

His continued admonishments to stay home and avoid the lines sound like one young man's ploy to ensure that nobody else is camping in front of his local AT&T store when he shows up Thursday morning to claim his own phone.

At least you got the chance to pre-order - none of the suppliers in the UK have allowed pre-order other than Apple themselves at full price. We have to take our chances wondering from store to store - not to bad expect loads of stock will have been wasted with CarPhone Whorehouse - who I refuse to deal with.

Could you please post the email? Or would you lose your job?

If I go to Apple as a walk-in on Sat or Mon. Will I be able to get a iPhone 4? Does anyone know if they get more phones daily? Id rather just wait out the initial rush..but i want one before i leave Cali :)

also Im already with AT&T and elig for an Upgrade..should be able to get it for the $199 price right?

thanks guys

wow so many people complaining that they can't wait in line. AT&T can't sell phones to walk ins if they don't have them.

Everyone is blaming AT&T why doesn't Apple get some blame, they are the ones producing the phones and allocating them to their retail outlets.

I know june 15th was a diaster and both companies are to blame, but its not the end of the world if you didnt get a preorder, you can still wait in line next tuesday. I know its frustrating believe me, I would love for them to all be on the same page but thats not gonna happen. We just got to deal with it.

I was fortunate to get a preorder but im still not holding my breath that i will get mine thursday
