No Walk-In iPhone 4 Sales at AT&T Retail Stores Until June 29th

My options are limited because I can ONLY purchase iPhone 4 at a AT&T store because I have a business account.

I think I am going to cancel my business account, so I can pick up my iPhone, then re-enable my business account on a different date. This is ridiculous.

I was told the opposite. I was told they would have them Thursday, first come first served.

Was your store corporate?

I called the RadioShack at Mall of America (MN) and they confirmed in-store trade-ins for iPhone 3g/3gs. However, they will only have 2 pre-reserved iPhone 4s available on Thursday =/

Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about... As soon as one expresses interest in purchasing the new generation iphone, their previous generation iphone stops working on launch date ... what a NOOB!!
 
Looks like I'll be going to Wal-Mart, should be fun!

edit: I also called my ATT store and they confirmed that walk-in's will be pushed back to the 29th. If any ATT store says otherwise then they probably haven't been informed of the new situation.

How is it a fail? They can only sell the amount of phones they get FROM Apple. Apple are the ones who determine how many each store get and which stores get what. If anyone has failed here, it's Apple.

I promise you 100% that if you go in to a store on Thursday and ask them for an Iphone 4 that they will tell you no. You can't sell what you don't have...

I've worked at AT&T for 2 1/2 years at a corporate store. The busiest store in all of Oklahoma actually and this is indeed true. There's nothing that our company is able to do to help appease the people hoping to walk-in and get one on the 24th. Unfortunately that's not possible. For all the people who called and were told that we will have them, that is not the case. An e-mail was sent out saying that only pre-orders and exchanges will be done in store on Thursday. We will accept walk-ins on Tuesday June 29th.

You can "bet your ass" that you'll go to the AT&T store tomorrow at 10:01 and you'll leave empty handed because even if they DO get your phone in tomorrow they're not going to let you have it until the 24th.

I'm just as annoyed by all this backorder stuff as some of you guys are. I planned on going to an AT&T store early on Thursday (around 1 or 2 am) and getting my own and then going to work and selling but unfortunately that's not going to be possible any longer. It's only a few more days so really not that big of a deal. I think it's a bigger deal that there's no white Iphone available as that seems to be the more popular one as of right now. Sorry for the bad news guys and gals but it's not AT&T's fault. If you're going to blame AT&T then you need to blame Apple as well. Wouldn't surprise me if they don't do walk-ins on the 24th either to be totally honest. With 600,000 pre-orders on the first day, they just don't have the inventory to do all of those AND walk-ins on the same day. Thankfully it's only pushed back 5 days though and not longer like it could have been.
 
Uggh, I was going to wait in line early Thursday morning at my AT&T store because I want to do a transfer of eligibility. I'm on a family talk plan and one phone is eligible for upgrade and after talking to an AT&T rep they said I could get the discounted phone and switch numbers to the number that isn't available for the discount. That way I get the iPhone 4 discounted on the number I want it on. The rep said she doubts the Apple store could handle it and if they could, they'd be so busy they'd probably blow you off to an AT&T store to get it taken care of, so it would be best to come to the AT&T store. I do have a reserved 32gb black at my Apple store though, just know it's going to be a headache there with the transfer of eligibility issue and getting the discounted price.

And if you called ATT customer service right now, they would tell you the same thing. If you go into the store tomorrow, they might have caught up with the news by then. But only because someone caught it on the news. It is amazing the company manages to do anything.
 
my buddy works for at&t and told me he'd hold one for me as long as I was their by 7am on thursday. I called him and the store to make sure and they both said they'd have some in along with the pre-orders on thursday.

This was always the case with my account before since I had a corporate account, but when I reserved online for pickup at an Apple store they were able to confirm my upgrade eligibility!

You should check with Apple...looks like they lifted that rule this time around.

Apple won't be able to do a transfer of eligibility for you. All they can do is upgrade phones and activate new lines. Out of luck there buddy.

Your friend is probably not telling you the truth. Even IF we do get some Iphone 4's in on launch day we won't be selling them until the 29th. It's been prohibited. The ONLY services being done on June 24th are for people who pre-ordered Iphone 4's and people doing exchanges from a 3G or 3GS.

Be worried. It's absolutely 100% true. No Iphone walk-in's on June 24th. They will be released for walk-in's on June 24th. I work for an AT&T corporate store as a sales rep and we received and email today about this. June 24th - Pre-orders and Exchanges ONLY
Junes 29th - Walk-in's accepted

Apple can do upgrades and activations on business accounts now. Should be no problem. They fixed that problem a while ago.

What about the people who did try, but don't have the time to sit at a computer all day waiting for AT&T's servers to work?

It doesn't really matter to me, since I'm waiting for the white iPhone, but it's pretty ****** that there are people out there who legitimately attempted to go through the pre-order process and got shut-out by crashes and intermittent availability of the servers. Especially for business customers, like myself, who cannot go through Apple and had to pre-order with AT&T.

But it's cool -- be an ass about it.

What do you mean exchange from a 3G to an iPhone 4? I thought they were only doing exchanges for 3gs

Thanks for that, at least now I have an answer, when I called AT&T and Apple they couldn't tell me for sure if they could do that or not. Now, can I purchase my reserved phone for the eligible line and NOT activate it at the apple store and take it to an AT&T store to have it activated. That's the next and all important question now

We extended the return policy from 30 days to 45 days basically. So some stores were still selling Iphone 3G until we ran completely out of stock. If you purhcased ANY phone with AT&T within the past 30 days (as long as it was before we put them on final sale on June 7) then you'll be able to exchange to the Iphone 4. Only problem with that is you had to pre-order and iphone 4 to even be able to exchange. We won't have any extra inventory on June 24th unfortunately. Just phones that were pre-ordered and sent to the store for pick up or exchange.

You SHOULD be able to do that, but I'm not sure how Apple dictates that kind of stuff. I know on the first 3 launches of Iphones we activated them right in store, but we would run in to problems for people buying them as a gift. If I were you I would tell them that you're giving the phone as a gift and you need to activate it at a later date. Again, I'm not sure what their policy is on that, but I don't think it should be a problem.

No, the transfer I was talking about is to do with eligibility and getting the discounted 199/299 (16gb/32gb respectively) on a new 2 year contract. If you're on a family talk plan and have a line that is not eligible for the discounted price and have another phone that is, you can transfer that eligibility from one line to another.
