You know what is funny? You are right. THe mac pro is weekened intentionally. No front row, no wifi, no bluetooth, no 2gb ram, pittiful HD. THe macbook pro has all of these things. Heck, the mac mini has these things.

They need to at least stick 2gb ram and wifi bluetooth into the base config. I mean come on.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic...

When they updated the MacBook Pro's, I was very close to grabbing one because of all the stuff it comes with STANDARD. The Mac Pro is stripped basically by Apple so they can have one solid price which is 2499. Now it has been this same price since August of 2006. It is June 2007, and we have seen:
A 100 dollar drop in the x1900xt, and an Octo Core Mac Pro, 160 gigabyte option taken away, and the addition of a 750 gig hard drive.

These are some subtle changes. Now the Mac Pro is FAST, don't get me wrong about that, it is the fastest Mac. But I think a slight bump in the specs would not hurt Apple.

I want:
CPU changes that reflect the Intel price drops, doesnt have to be this week. But until it happens I am not buying

GPU: An 8xxx series in the stock config. 8300, 8600 whatever.

RAM: 2GB stock

HD: 500GB would be nice, again pricing allows for that, if not oh well.

Would be nice:
SS
BT and WiFi standard.

It ain't gonna happen.

When the existing CPUs drop in price, Apple is going to move on to the next generation to be able to maintain the actual prices.

More RAM, HDs, and BT/AE for free? Why if people are glad to pay for them?

Apple's pricing policy has been pretty consistent and they will keep the prices as high as the market allows them.

I am disappointed myself.. I have no doubt when the the revision is made including processor cuts it will be amazing but kind of stinks for some of us until then. A quiet update would have been nice.. and it should have happened when the 8 cores came out.

I don't see apple passing on price cuts.. i now expect them to ride out the current line up till october, if Peryn is ready for then and the whole line will be upgraded, new case design etc.

I was impressed today with no hardware, other than the iphone.

We now have more games coming to mac, just no graphics cards to play them.

I'm also disappointed with the absense of a Mac Pro update. I'm getting ready to sell my PowerBook G4 in the coming weeks and really want to see something happen. I don't want to order my Mac Pro and see an update a couple days later. Perhaps I'll wait through two more Tuesdays and if nothing happens, then I'll bite. :)

Can you read!? I don't care if the damn price drops. Why the heck can't you understand that when I am saying it loud and clear!?

I don't want a price drop. I want hardware that matches current CPU pricing. Example for the feeble minded:

CPUs drop in price, so 3.0Ghz chip now costs the same or less than the current 2.66Ghz. Bump the 3.0Ghz into the stock Mac Pro.

Hmm, wasn't this just done with the Macbook? How about the Macbook Pro? iMac a little while ago? I am seeing a trend. A trend of putting current hardware in computers to keep up with current tech and prices.

I never said I wanted a price drop. I have said SPECIFICALLY that I don't want a price drop for people like you suggesting I do. I will say it again, I AM NOT ASKING FOR A PRICE DROP. I am asking for updated hardware NOT A PRICE DROP. Do you get it now?

If you can't read, please don't respond to my posts. I am being as clear as possible yet people keep coming back with the same argument against the argument I AM NOT MAKING.

More RAM, HD for free? Wow I must be stupid, cause didn't Apple just give people: New GPU, CPU, Chipset, HD size and RAM upgrade to the MBP.... for FREE? Or, the same price it was the day before they did the upgrade!? WTH is wrong with you people? I am sure people were paying for upgrades on the Macbook Pro weren't they?

Again, by this twisted and to put it bluntly stupid logic we should all be using computers from 1997, and pay tons of money to upgrade since hardware specs aren't allowed to be changed based on your model.

Also, I said before I KNOW APPLE DOESN"T DROP PRICES WHEN THEY DON"T HAVE TO!!! Please READDDDDDDDDDD! :apple:

Hey dooode, Calm down ;)

I just bought a 3ghz Quad 3 days ago and I'm so damn happy with this machine that I could care less if they come out with a new case tomorrow (they can't change much than that for the next few months). The X1900 might not be the fastest card out there but it's blazing fast. I spent another big chunk of money buying RAM and Hard drives (BT and AE came installed)
This machine has a power supply capable of running my home's AC system; it's built with industrial quality, expandable, Did I say FAST?

The thing is that once you finally buy into a Mac Pro system you won't want Apple to renew it every 4 months like they do with the MBPs.

And, of course you already know it; your new computer will be yesterdays technology very soon after you buy it, so the best thing to do is make enough money with it to be able to change every couple of years and deduce it from taxes; or if you don't work with your machine, than pop a $100 dollar bill into a jar every month so you can upgrade when you feel like it.

I have some top end DSLR cameras that get outdated evry 1.5 years and also a wide format printer with similar fate.

Enjoy the new technology. Let it make you happy.

Bests

there is no new technology, i don't disagree with a price-drop, but if you want more memory its available, if you want a better graphic option get a fx4500, if you want the top of the line xeon get the 3.0ghz, its all there i dont know what more you want (correction i do know you want: a price-drop and intel tech that is not yet produced)

"if you want a better graphics option, pay $1500 for something that does 5 FPS better than the X1900 and was released at the same time in JANUARY 2006 (18 months ago) "

I can't believe you even posted that.. why can't fanboys just say "yeah OK bad video cards, they'll probably fix it in a month" rather than "OMG nobody NEEDS anything faster than an X1900 anyway STUPID"

I just watched the keynote and I'm PISSED. This was really the worst one ever by my estimation.

This is sort of like a mental chinese finger-trap: the more he tells people to read his posts, the less people do.

By the way, the price drops (for those who can't do a simple search in this forum to find the table we came up with) occur next month.

Basically, at the same Hz, woodcrests and clovertowns will cost the same starting NEXT MONTH. Woodcrest prices are STATIC.

Intel is trying to edge-out Opteron, and is currently retooling its factories to deal with demand that will come from their clovertown price drop.

I was hoping Apple had a special deal with Intel (as they did with the clovertown 3ghz) to get them at this reduced price early, but they apparently don't.

Therefore, next month or August will probably see 8 cores across the board at the same price, and Apple just didn't see fit to touch the Mac Pro line or retrain its computer assemblers in their Indonesian sweatshops more than twice in 1 summer.

Thank you and good night.

I havent seen anything pointing to static pricing on the Woodcrests, there just doesn't seem to be updated pricing for those. I can see how they could see them at the same price, but that seems unlikely.

But whatever. I will just have to wait til they make a move. I hope it is soon. I was just getting frustrated with the lack of understanding by people here.

What I am seeking is no different from what is being done (or not being done, Mini anyone?) on current Apple machines. The defenders are really ridiculous sometimes.

Utter disappointment, just like MacWorld was.

Someone needs to take the iPhone out back and shoot it to the worker bees can go back to work on COMPUTERS.

PUT some 2007 VIDEO CARDS IN THE MAC PRO STEVE!!

I'm sure legions of EA Games fans can't wait to play new games on a 7300GT or an x1900xt when there are more powerful and more CURRENT video cards out there.

Apple does what is in Apple's best interest. It's business.

I have $3,500 ready to drop on a Mac Pro, and I'm waiting for updates. That's in my best interest. It's business.

When Apple sees the need to update their product, as reflected in reduced sales, they'll do so to remain competitive.

So far, they haven't felt enough of a need to do something about it. I think that's a testament to how good the Mac pro really is.

I just won't buy one until it's a bit more compelling for *me*...

8 cores as the only choice might not be the answer for everyone -- at least not yet -- It's not faster with photoshop or aperture and might even be slower with some simple tasks or apps... Not everybody encodes video.

I do believe that Apple is going to do something about better graphic cards now that they made big announcements about gaming. I'm not an avid gamer and the X1900 gives me over 120 fps in the game I play, but I don't think Apple is going to attract any PC gamers if they don't give them cutting edge performance in that area.

I consider myself a Mac fanboy but more because of the OS X than the hardware. I do love the quality and design of Apple HW and I, like all you guys pay a premium price for that; but if OSX would run on a PC I would find myself evaluating other machines. With the $5K i just spent on my MP I can do a disaster in the PC hardware world.

Exactly--they aren't announcing price updates on woodcrests. It seems weird, I know, but I'm just assuming they're dropping woodcrest or something like that.

Even if they do drop woodcrest prices, as you said, Apple NEVER drops prices. They'll probably just upgrade to clovertown since it's the same profit margin (minus ~$40).

You do remember that the Mac Pro's were released last year at WWDC. Why would it be so hard to see them updating them there.

Because, other than an update to the bto option of a high end graphics card, there is NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING, new to put in a Mac Pro. It's too early for SS, too early for a Blu-ray drive (needs new quicktime and DVD player), too early for a price decrease (that's coming in July - Apple won't move until Intel does), and there is no new CPU chip, so what are you going to update in a Mac Pro to give a new Mac Pro update. The 8-core Mac Pro WAS an update. Face it and move on. Next update is sometime in October or later.

Guess you weren't reading the posts… we just wanted a quiet addition in the store refresh.

No, people here wanted a big announcement at the keynote, otherwise why would they wait for WWDC. WWDC is where big things are announced, like the first Mac Pro.

Well they don't appear to be updating the Mac Pro today so I'm going to go ahead and get one.

It's fast enough for me! :p

Whats odd is that the current stock video card in the Mac Pro runs most games VERY well. Sadly, if you want to play games on your comp (mainly), i wouldn't recommend this to my friends, but buy a PC and then upgrade your graphics card every time a new one comes out.
Simple solution.

So even though people are saying, "No, we wanted a quiet refresh," you still assert that we did. If you don't want to discuss Mac Pro updates please see yourself out of the thread.

You can't tell me Apple has never done a quiet refresh of product after a big event. And anyhow, I will just wait for the update rather it be the Beatles singing or a quiet store update.

So since you shouldn't game on a Mac Pro we don't need current GPUs right...

Yes, it plays games very well. I've had no complaints myself. I think in UT2004 at 1280 x 800 at everything on HIGH, I'm getting over 80 FPS.

But we always want better. Hey, I'll even admit I want better. "The grass is greener on the other side" right now.

Why is everyone complaining when WWDC isn't over yet? As soon as the keynote is over everyone is complaining. So they expected something in the keynote. WWDC is on for this whole week. There could be an announcement tomorrow, or Thursday... but no, everyone is already complaining.

WHEN DID THIS THREAD START!!! 2:45 ET! AFTER the keynote! You guys say one thing but all your actions say another. Admit it.

This isn't really complaining. All my rebuttals are to the folks who think "it doesn't need to be updated," I know it could be updated today. Did I expect him to say "NEW MAC PROs" in the keynote. No. DId I expect an update in the store afterwards, yes.

There was no update, which is what this thread discusses. I have said it could be updated today. I know that full well. But of course you are right...
