I think you're totally wrong. They just announced the Macbook Pro, and I think they're going to live off the marketting hype of the Macbook Pro, Macbook, and the iPhone for the next month.

And if anything gets announced, it's going to be new iMacs or Mac Minis.

It would be nice if my mac purchase was auto upgraded but my feeling is the MP won't see a refresh till between Oct 07-->Feb 08.. perhaps better GFX card, and base ram, HD in the meantime. But other than switchin to 8-cores across the board, theres no processors to upgrade. That timeline doesn't work for me, so i bought. Anyways I just bought so time for me to ignore technology for 4 yrs lesst I become bitter as technology marches on.

I disagree, the revisions to the MacPro will not even be announced, they will just be updated in the store with a small banner ad on the front page. They will stop the 2GHz and reposition the rest of the range with slightly bumped specs.

I call them futurists. They can't live and enjoy the present (which is the only thing we have at hand) They think that all the good stuff is in the future. They are afraid to act. They feel safe not acting and blaming their failure to others.

I feel sorry for them...

I have today the best computer in the world; it's humming softly at my left. It sounds so good. It smells so good. It looks so good. When I push it with a batch of noiseninja or other filter in CS3 or aperture it smokes anything I've ever owned before; but it does it seamlessly. 60 pounds of pure quality, design, and performance. what a good choice I've made;)

In one year or two I'll get a new :apple: , and this one will be making somebody else happy. Yes, I take care of my stuff so others after me can have the joy too. This machine will still rock 5 years from now but I treat myself with new technology every year or 2. I work hard and can afford it.

I agree. Just buy and computer and use it. I'm sure the computers we all have are more than adequate for our needs.

I bought a car last year, but I'm not going around all upset b/c now the 2008 models are coming out and they have updated the ...etc. and.....!!!! ARG! I'll have to sell my 6 month old car and get a brand new 2008!!!

Apple will constantly be releasing products as they always have. Every year. Just buy a computer and use it. It will work fine for many years. :)

I agree with what you are saying, and a car is a little different, being a lot more expensive, but would you buy that car if a new model was a few weeks away. Surely, you would order it in advance and have the new model.

I also agree for the most part, but the distinction you've made is often ignored when comparing things. Very, very few companies offer no insight in to future product updates, or new products before they suddenly appear. Very few ever could, not only the trial of keeping things secret, but the need to get awareness, and as soon as you are distributing something it comes out. Apple have positioned themselves to be able to logistically do such a thing.

Of course we can look at major Intel events in their roadmap to get an idea, which I guess is what really causes most of the issues, as we sort of know when something might be possible, but really don't have the exact date.

Well I went ahead and bought a Mac Pro and I'm loving it right now.

It's more then enough for me, I'll report back when I get Final Cut Installed.

Nice one. You won't have any issues running Final Cut, or anything for that matter. People going quad 2.66 won't have issues for years to be honest.

Congrats.:) What's the specs?

Specs
Quad 2.66
3 Gigs of ram
250 gig drive + 320 gigs + my IDE 320 gig drive (put it below the dvd burner, I can't believe it worked.
7300 GT
Airport
20 inch ACER
applecare duh

pretty basic setup/

I installed Windows Xp Professional for gaming, Final Cut Studio 2 for editing, Adobe CS2 (I can live with the speed trust me)

Another thing you could add is a Blue-ray drive for the movies.

I hate to say it (but I will)… I suspect that now WWDC announcements (or lack of) have settled, we will see a refresh of the MacPro this Monday or Tuesday.

They are shipping out very quickly any new orders placed the beginning of the week, my bet is orders placed today and over the weekend will be delayed and auto-upgraded. :)

Well, it's Tuesday and let's see... no new Mac Pros.

Man I should have made a bet on that...

Hey dooode, Calm down ;)

I just bought a 3ghz Quad 3 days ago and I'm so damn happy with this machine that I could care less if they come out with a new case tomorrow (they can't change much than that for the next few months). The X1900 might not be the fastest card out there but it's blazing fast. I spent another big chunk of money buying RAM and Hard drives (BT and AE came installed)
This machine has a power supply capable of running my home's AC system; it's built with industrial quality, expandable, Did I say FAST?

The thing is that once you finally buy into a Mac Pro system you won't want Apple to renew it every 4 months like they do with the MBPs.

And, of course you already know it; your new computer will be yesterdays technology very soon after you buy it, so the best thing to do is make enough money with it to be able to change every couple of years and deduce it from taxes; or if you don't work with your machine, than pop a $100 dollar bill into a jar every month so you can upgrade when you feel like it.

I have some top end DSLR cameras that get outdated evry 1.5 years and also a wide format printer with similar fate.

Enjoy the new technology. Let it make you happy.

Bests

That is what I want to buy or even the 8 core version. Only Money is holding me back :D

Well I am back into the mode of buying one.... Come on Apple. Jeez.

WizardHunt. I think what most people are doing is going with the 2.66Ghz model. Then getting RAM 3rd party from OWC, Crucial, DMS, Transintl, etc.

Some are doing the 2.0 CPUs with the plan of upgrading later. If you don't plan on doing that go with the CPUs you can afford.

RAM is still coming down, however it will go up as FB-DIMMs and DDR2 are going to be phased out.

I think most people like their Mac Pros, I loved the one I had last year. I think you will be happy with it. Of course, be aware that some feel it is due for an upgrade soon. Mainly higher stock RAM, new GPUs, and a CPU shift. There is a new chipset on the horizon, but no one is clear on a release for that.

sooo disappointed. i was holding off on my purchase hoping for a bone. I am so sure that I'll pull the trigger and in 2 weeks my mac pro will be an old generation. I got this PB g4 two months before they went intel.

I dont mind the small enhancements, upgrades... thats going to happen. I just hate the idea of buying something and having core architechture change almost immediately.

sigh...

I'm totally with you JIMEDIT1... I have a dual 867 "loudest computer in the history of the universe" G4 and just now have enough money to spend $3k+ on a new Mac, but feel like they're half-way between releases. I suspect the Mac Pro redesign will come out with Leopard, and with little fanfare.

I extremely doubt they will release a redesigned Mac Pro before the third quarter of next year. The design is perfect now. Might get a mid-range tower before then, but a Mac Pro redesign I think not.

This is the route I'm going. 200% sold myself on it, ordering tomorrow. This helped (as well as peoples posts on here)....

15% actual difference between the 2.0 and 2.66. You're looking at 10 seconds here, 10 seconds there only on processor intensive tasks. This doesn't effect my work at all and the money saved will go way further down the road when proc prices fall.

CPU's being upgraded from 2.0's to 3.0's by anandtech.com for those who haven't seen it...

apple left motorola for ibm because mot was too slow with the G4 upgrades. apple left ibm for intel because it was too slow with the G5 upgrades. now with intel we are back to the same old story. one year with no real updates. what a joke!

I don't think this is intel's fault. Apple can refresh the Mac Pro anytime they feel like it. I just hope it's soon.
