Given that it’s apple, I’m surprised they don’t try to make some sort of metal or AirPods like hard plastic cases.
They should.
Yeah well there is the transparant case of course, but a wider range of colored plastic cases (recycled of course) would make sense. A silicone case already has such plastic case on the inside, as you will find out after a couple of months of use 😉

I find it amazing that people expect the item they use to protect their phones from scratches, dents, liquid etc. to not be affected by scratches, dents, liquid etc.. It's been nearly 6 months since they came out with them. Everyone's experience will be different. Did the case keep the phone protected?
I think the point is that the previous product didn't look like crap while keeping the phone safe.

It seems to me that making leather cases is much more environmentally friendly than making a piece of plastic. The leather comes from cows that have been slaughtered. Using the hide to make phone cases would seem to be an ideal use for the hides. Plastic will not decompose in a landfill, leather will decompose over time.

For those that think using animal hides for a phone case is wrong, I would suggest they get rid of leather belts, leather shoes, leather wallets, leather hats, leather garments, and leather upholstery in their vehicles.

Yeah, I handled a FineWoven case in the store and it was a hard pass. I just didn't like the texture or anything else about it.

I happened to be on a vacation in London and stopped by the shop of these folks and bought an absolutely stellar case from them: https://ryanlondon.com/ Been using it daily since early January and it's wearing in quite well. I especially appreciate the very subtle branding and the sturdy protective ring around the rear cameras.

A lot of the discoloration on that case looks like it's the result of water/sweat. You can literally see rounded drip marks.
It's almost as if phone cases should be designed to handle the real world, which includes some water and sweat sometimes.

My Otterbox cases have always lasted the entire time I've had the phone, up to four years.

Apple could learn a thing or three from them.

That's what happens when you try to invent dodgy ass material to replace actual high quality leather only to appeal to some cabbages who get triggered by leather
Listen, if someone came up with something that wore in as well as leather and had less of an environmental impact I'd be all over it. I'm using a faux leather desk pad from Satechi and it's an awesome simulation of leather, but I don't have to think twice about setting my coffee cup on it. Was hoping Apple's new case material would somehow achieve something similar, but it's apparently a huge letdown.

The leather cases developed a really nice patina over time as they absorbed oils from skin and got scratched up. It's bizarre that a micro-twill fabric case is being held to a different standard.

I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I actually like these cases very much. Sure, I don't use my phone as a fetch toy for dogs or anything like that, so I did not have any problems with it.

Bought one around November and it's still looking as it was when I purchased it. The only difference is that it has skin oils embedded in it - but that's a normal thing and can be washed off easily with a bristle toothbrush.

Not sure what people are doing with their phones that it gets so bad...
That’s awesome you have something that you like. Shame on anyone “hating on you” for that.

The hate is not that it exists, the hate is on they discontinued the leather case for it. Like MJ said many years ago, democrats and republicans buy tennis shoes. There are people who like leather cases, and people who don’t. No need to alienate people that do as Apple has done. Why anger any of your customers when you don’t need to?

I see some issues about the durability indeed and it does not age very well, but it is a case protecting the phone. If I were a manufacturer I would produce a protection plastic layer for the case at about 5$...

Which, coincidentally, is pretty close to what my case cost. It's made of durable plastic, and it's absolutely fine.

And it's got a metal ring in it so my phone will work with the magnetic charger in my car, since it's an older phone that doesn't have one from the factory.
