Looks like I need to send Steve Jobs a link to the Currency App...

aTV economics work for me...
My math says I paid $140 a month for that 'free' cable box (actually, for HD, I had to pay 5/month rental), on top of 'bundled' internet.

Where do you get expanded basic cable and premium channels for free? I can't PPV unless I actually subscribe to the channel

On aTV If I watch nothing, I pay nothing...
If I watch nothing on the cable box, I pay $30/week.
Thats a lot of rentals.

I figure aTV would pay for itself in 2 months, even after paying $55 a month in 20mb DSL

What works for you wouldn't work with me. I am forced to buy my internet access through my cable company. To split them up would be hundreds of $$ more per month. People like me are boxed by the cable monopolies.

I'm not a sucker and I like iAds. Why do you hate it lol? It just replaces the existing ads by other companies, except they are far less intrusive.

Before iAd (iPhone 3) the only ads were on web pages and those could be controlled. With iOS, the ads are dug in deep and are everywhere. It totally ruins the experience of what would otherwise be a more flawless device. You seriously like seeing advertisements pop up, all the time, when you're trying to do something on a device you bought and own? What if your car flashed an ad on your windshield every time you accelerate or brake, would you still like advertisements? I can't believe you're for real.

Are you serious? Do you even own an iPhone? If so, I don't know what free apps you've downloaded, but this is nothing like my experience.

Um no. Ads were (and are) in almost all free apps, usually at the bottom or top of the screen. You don't see iAds come up unless you open it, just like you would any other ad, but unlike those other ads, iAds don't take you out of your app and you can close it anytime.

Built in Mic makes this a WiFi only iPhone

Wow! I'm really craving a new iPod Touch. According to Apple's tech specs, it now has a microphone:

Input and output

30-pin dock connector
3.5-mm stereo headphone minijack
Built-in speaker
Microphone

Which is expected to go along with the video. Take a look at some of the pictures on the gallery page and you'll see the hole for the microphone on the edge that has the doc connector, just to the left of the doc connector. (The other side of the doc connector than the head phone jack.)

Now it is truly is a wifi only iPhone. With a MiFi mobile hotspot and Skype (or a similar service), this might also be an alternative to a cell phone.

Great Presentation

Very professional and entertaining although the ATV is almost useless in countries without full iTunes Store (music movies).

I was hoping for an iLife11 but perhaps next month!!!

Great news on IOS4.1 - I love my iPhone4 which doesn't drop calls in Singapore, best phone ever....

I am totally amazed at the media attention that Apple deservedly commands but fear it also invites some negativity from those who resent it....

When do you think the iPod Touch will upgrade to a 128GB version? That's honestly the only thing holding me back. I've been wanting one for three years now, but I keep waiting for the upgrade to space.

Can someone explain to me why they took away the ability to purchase movies from iTunes on the AppleTV? I'm assuming this also defeats the previous model of syncing movies? So now I'm forced to leave my MBP open and running in order to stream to the AppleTV? WTF? They could have easily stuck a 16GB flash drive in there, like the Touch. Stupid.

Hopefully Apple doesn't remove this from the older hardware.

Steve fails. Nano is pathetic. No point to a touch screen on a device that small. It can't even play video! Seriously. Apple TV fails too. What a giant leap backwards! He is totally off the mark in saying people don't want a computer for their TV. I've been saying this for a very long time, and here is what I think Apple TV needs to succeed...

Apple needs to create a one stop box for consumers to have in their living rooms (kind of what like the xbox hoped to be, but failed because its marketed only to gamers). At the moment we have a bunch of different boxes and remotes in our living rooms. What I want is a box that can do everything.

1) Download apps, and not just crappy iOS apps either. I'm talking full blown games to rival PS3 and 360.
2) Stream stuff wirelessly from my Mac iTunes libraries
3) Stream stuff wirelessly from the net
4) Play my blu-ray movies (yes blu-ray optical drive included please)
5) Full 1080p res

Minimizing functions (doing a few key things well) may work for things like the iPad where aesthetics and ergonomics are paramount, but for the Apple TV, well Steve needs to toss that logic. Less is NOT more with the Apple TV. People want it to do as much as it possibly can. At the moment there is no decent online store for TV apps, I dont want a PS3 AND an Apple TV. I just want an Apple Box!
you may take a look at the new mac mini.

2 generations of Nano with out a memory increase. That's what's annoying me. I want small, but I want more memory in my small device. The main issue with my nano isn't the size, it's only 16gig of storage.

Last year I saw the nano as a superficial upgrade in features but no need to upgrade as I already had a 16 gig and wanted more memory. So this year they remove the added features and some exisiting ones and make it smaller, still keeping the same memory.

That's a huge disappointment. So I won't upgrade again. Don't like the mini touch screen but would have given it a shot.

Are they just deciding memory isn't a key factor for MP3 player upgrades any more? Style and form and size is the key?
Or is it a push to get people to buy mp3 players they can then buy apps for?

How much do you expect for $99?

so is the R&D of the iPod Touch (via the iPhone)

I think the point was that this is an iPhone minus several expensive parts, plus nothing, and costing "more."

say it's subsidized all day, but the prices are wrong. especially the nano's price. The shuffle seems like a good price, though. more than competitors, but not too much more, and it's apple.

the 8gb touch shouldn't exist, and the 16 gb should be 199-219 or so.

You seem to be confused. The iphone costs $599/$699. You have to have phone service and data service for a 2 year contract to get an iphone at that price.

UK = ATV £99

Well part of the difference is your tax is included.
Part of it is that it costs significantly more to do anything with anything in the UK. Fuel costs for shipping to stores/distribution are higher. I don't know if you realize this, but the cost of living is a bit higher in the UK than the US.

Part of it is to subsidize the wonky power plugs for your tiny market. (jk)(kind of)

I know I am spewing out crazy talk now, but maybe more goes into the price difference than the exchange rate. Apple is in no way unique in this regard. If you do not feel like you are getting any benefit from the higher cost of living in your area, you should consider moving...

I totally agree that a simple currency conversion isn't realistic, but Apple TV is pushing it too far.

Consider this-

Apps- 99c = 59p
Songs- 99c = 79p
Macbook- $999 = £849
iMac- $1199 = £999
Mac Mini- $699 = £649

So surely Apple TV should be around £75-85? It is just insulting. Especially as sterling:dollar has been pretty steady for a year now but Apple's prices keep going up.

Now I am not a patriotic person (I think it is pretty childish, it's just lines on a map) and don't care when people laugh at the UK (provided I can laugh back)... but there are limits. I will NOT sit quietly and let you insult our power plugs! I am sick of going to Europe, US etc and using crappy plugs that bend, fall out the wall, spark etc. UK power plugs are the best in the world! That and our road signs (crazy Europeans with stupids fonts and US resistance to roundabouts). Rest of the country is crap so go nuts. :D

Minus VAT (17.5%) UK ATV = £81.67 ($125.75). 30% mark up? Really?

Don't Apple spend money shipping to any other country? Is fuel free there? Does Canada, the EU, or any other country have a 30% mark up? Im interested in finding out how much they charge in Japan, if they release there.

For a product which is nerfed in the UK (unless im wrong and Netflix has suddenly started streaming movies to the UK), and historically not sold very well, a 1:1 price ratio is hardly much of an incentive to buy.

We may have wonky plugs, but at least we have a decent voltage here Mr 10 minutes to boil a kettle! (;D)

How much do you expect for $99?

Well, I can get a 16GB flash drive for less than $30. So make the damn thing $129. Steve OPENLY said the device is for a specific group of people, why worry about pricing?

A $99 rental box is ridiculous - and he admits it's ridiculous when you have to throw in a Netflix front-end to make it sound appealing.

Better yet, wait until the whole cloud thing is working and release it then. That way, customer goes onto iTunes and buys said movie. You have the ability to watch it on any device with your iTunes account and internet connection. Problem solved. And we all know Apple will have an "event" in which they tout how you will be able to (finally) stream any of your purchased content without a computer.

I agree

The TV show rental idea is about as exciting as paying .99 cents every time you listen to a song...it's a total loser. I would like to either see a subscription service where you can get whatever you want...whenever you want or I would like to see iAd supported TV shows (or let me choose if I want Ad supported or not).

I don't blame Apple on this one so much...Jobs knows that this iteration of AppleTV is still a bust but he can't make anything better without the consent of the multimedia companies. The media companies are screwing Apple and consumers to their own detriment. Why can't Apple work out a subscription deal like NetFlix has? Apple knows what songs we buy from iTunes...why can't we stream music we buy from the web to whatever device we want (without syncing)? Hulu have free ad-supported tv shows instantly available plus the option to subscribe for no ads...why can't Apple do that? The media companies are all to blame for this. They gave Apple too much control with music and now they're regretting it because they wish they could keep all the money and not share it with Apple. What they don't get is that if they would have tried to do the same thing on their own they would have failed because they have crappy service and no hardware. Apple showed them the way to the future. I believe that Jobs is still trying to show them the way to the multimedia future but their greed and ignorance is preventing them. :(

Stop being tards media companies!

I hope so

I think you're right on that one. The new hardware revision is really just to position Apple to be able to eventually roll out something cool one day once they talk some sense into the media companies.

Are you effing kidding me? Another goddamn interface change? Vertical open/close buttons now? Again, are you effing kidding me? Enough. STANDARDIZE ON A CONSISTENT INTERFACE!!!!

Time to go to Gnome or KDE methinks. Pathetic.

Well

In case anyone reading page 10+ cares...

To me, the rear camera on the touch is fine. Why would you need more than 1-2 megapixels on such a thing? What are you going to do with these photos? Email them or post online. In that case, the resolution is perfect. Im so tired of getting gigantic image files from people who have no concept of what resolution even is. Maybe this will start a good trend...

Apple tv for me is pretty useless. If they'd put an over-the-air receiver in there, and a dvr, I'd buy one in an instant for 2x the price. There are millions of people who don't have cable, and with digital broadcasts have no way to record stuff. The only single-box solution out there is way overpriced. Windows media player plus a receiver is a clunky setup. How about an apple tv "plus" with these features? I know it's not apple-like to do this, but I can dream, right?

It's odd isn't it. iTunes seems to be a place where Apple is happy to tinker around with (bastardise) standard OS X GUI elements. We're all used to it now but those scroll bars are another example that is still out of step with the rest of the OS.

I'd love to know what the reason is. Are they using iTunes as a platform to experiment and gauge user response?

Sadly Windows is miles ahead of OS X when it comes to a consistent interface...
