I’ve loved my iPhone X this past year, but I’d ordered a regular XS last Friday afternoon, mostly as a way to hop on the IUP. Wandered into the Apple Store yesterday to see the new things, made a reservation to pick up a Watch, then when I came back for the reservation I played around with a XS Max model in the store. I was suprised at how nice it felt in my (relatively small) hands, and definitely liked the big screen. So when I got in line to pick up the Watch I asked if I could grab a XS Max too, and return the one I’d ordered, and boom, I walked out with a new Watch and a XS Max.
The funny thing is, I’m now getting used to TWO larger things: the XS Max, and a 44mm watch where my last two were 38mm. The watch is nice, but a day in still looks a little large to me, whereas the XS Max doesn’t LOOK huge. Since the XS I’d ordered is still on the way, I figure I’ll just keep whichever works better. But so far what I’ve noticed is: the Max makes most content feel comfortable, especially in apps that have updated for its size. Typing is definitely easier, at least in, again, apps where the size is adjusted and not just blown up (if you’re in an app that isn’t updated for the Max yet, you get a blown-up keyboard, which isn’t ideal). I can do more with it one-handed than I expected; it’s probably just a tad more awkward than the X in that respect, and with the X I always felt it was just a LITTLE bigger than I’d want for one-handed mode. So I’m mostly using a second hand about the same amount as I did with the X. I think.
The one thing that has me hesitating still — and here’s where more time will decide for me — is the weight. I can definitely feel fatigue in my hand and wrist after using it for a bit. The X was already a bit heavier than I’d want, and obviously the XS Max is that much more. It crossed. my mind that maybe this will encourage me to stare at my phone less, which would be healthy, and the fact that I’m coming up with weird rationalizations says how much I really am liking the big display.
