Why shouldn't we compare them, they both make computers. We can compare their PC business. Come up with something else.

you were comparing their software development, talking iWork/iChat etc

and i' was pointing out that it isn't a valid comparison

What XP/Vista pain? Even after the quick success of Windows 7, you'll find that many XP users, if not *most* XP users, don't want to move to 7.

I don't know about most folks, but on my 5 year old hardware, installing W7 and having to go reinstall a bunch of apps (including locating software keys, etc.) doesn't sound very pleasant for little in the way of benefit (aero probably isn't a pleasant thing on my old machines, assuming it runs).

i don't think i've ever heard of someone running out to buy a new computer of any kind just because there is a new OS, they run out and buy the new OS, so the Wall Street Journal article seems a bit out of place

and i've got a bridge i'd like to sell to the guy who actually thinks any OS release means a big boost in new computer sales

Actually there was a 22 percent boost in computer sales when Windows 7 was released. This though didn't help the revenues of the PC companies who thought they could use Windows 7 to sell higher margined machines. It's all in this article buddy:

Do you even try to understand what people are writing? DELL might be in bad shape but it does not mean that all PC companies are. Do you even know that HP makes twice as much profits as Apple? Ignorance is a bliss.

HP is the exception to the rule. The majority of PC makers are struggling to make profits. Even HP found no increase in revenues from the launch of Windows 7 because no one wanted to buy their higher margined machines, they were all buying cheaper options:

Most people have old keyboards, mice, and monitors lying around. WTF would they go spend all that money on new ones.

That is partly true. I have tons of keyboards/mice that I have received over the years as part of my computer system package...some are the older ps/2 style, but most are the USB style. But when someone like my mom or dad or wife buys a new pc:

1)The replacement system is typically given/sold away to someone else...and again, people want the whole package.

2)Styles come and go for keyboards/mice...such as now wireless mice. I would hate to have to go back to a wired mouse. Not to mention colors or even extra keys (which I hate) like for your speakers or assignable buttons to launch apps.

3)Monitors is a unique subject....almost everyone I have helped buy a replacement computer still wanted a new shiny monitor (since their old one was 3+ years old and maybe not as thin or large or high in quality). And since the monitors are typically embedded into the price of a new pc (just like with the iMacs), there is little reason to save (get ripped off actually) $60 and let Dell keep your 20" monitor. Heck, I'd rather get the 20" monitor and then sell it for $99 or more...or just keep it as a spare in case my old one dies.

And for anyone switching from a PC to a Mac...alas, the PC keyboards/mice will not work 100% flawlessly. I've tried. Please don't try to convince me or anyone else. Plus the PC keyboards are missing keys that the Mac keyboards have.

And lastly...only Apple charges $100 for a mouse/keyboard combination ($50 each). At time of purchase, Windows pc vendors include the 2 for free...and if you want specialty devices, you can buy then and there or order from a bazillion choices elsewhere. If you really think Apple's $100 pricetag is fair, then I will gladly subtract $100 from all PC prices I quote in the future. :)

you can't say for certain the 22% comes from Windows 7, the summer months and leasing in the Fall is also back to school and there also countless sales/deals going on as Intel also released new chips/chipsets so there was plenty of inventory clearing going on. and people buying the latest and greatest hardware, also the margin for PC is also lower since there is more competition, people actually have choices when buying a PC, for a Mac there is only 1 place to go, the competition drives down the profit, but don't be mistaken into thinking they aren't making money or have market share

also most early adopters of the OS are going to be the enthusiasts who will be just buying the parts they need, and not necessarily who PCs

the usual lack of objectivity

Why do you all get so high off these NPD results when they only observe brick and mortar results?

Apple is certainly wildly successful. Who would try to refute their quarterly performance year over year? But you can read about their results and substantiate it, I dont need NPD to give me dubious statistics.

But sitting here and trying to make excuses for W7 successes is ridiculous. It's one thing to be passionate about something, but some of the "usuals" start spout buzzwords from the latest Jobs' presentation like it came from some God in order to bash an opposing brand seems desperate

I didnt buy a Mac Pro because of it was "magic and amazing". I bought it because I liked OS X and didnt think their other desktop offerings were expandable or worth the price.

People buy what they can afford and where they see value. Just because SJ says he can't build a good computer at 500 bucks doesnt mean anyone else can't. And it doesnt make the buyer of said PC some mindless fool for buying it. He's a successful salesman/marketer. But think rationally on your own from time to time

Let's be real here, the same guy also said

no one reads --> iPad with iBook store
no one wants to watch video on an ipod --> ipod video
BR is a bag hurt --> faster adoption than DVD
....

Dude you are being naive if you don't believe the sales increase is due to Windows 7. As for for the PC companies, the only way they can differentiate from others is from through price, they have no other way to differentiate themselves. At least Apple has OSX, WTF do the PC companies have. Apple is at least smart to develop their own OS and charge more for it, and they aren't depending on another company. If Microsoft decides to drop another dud like Vista the PC companies are in deep doo doo.

As for the profits, its laughable when top PC companies like Acer are making around 60 million US dollars in profits. I mean its a joke. You have Dell laying off workers, they aren't getting any scrapping the bottom of the barrel which is already dry. Anyways they should keep on dropping prices. I mean we all need 99 dollar PC's. Meanwhile Microsoft is laughing all the way to the bank.

The iPad is really going to kill the under $1,000 computer market.

I've spoke to several non Apple Fans who have told me that they will buy one just to play with.

Also I've notice that women like the design and concept of the iPad too. A computer with out a clunky keyboard or a ton of wires....

wow, you just completely miss the point

Apple is a software company and all these other companies aren't, why do you insist that hardware companies need to make software? that is not their area of expertise

Apple is a software company, since when?

This logic is totally flawed. If someone will decide to use a tablet instead of desktop or laptop it will be because of the overlap in functionality and not because of the price of PC. If anything iPad may hurt sales of Mac computers. Why should I buy a $1500 computer if I can use $500 iPad instead? The price gap is not as severe for PCs. Besides, those who buy Macs as a status thing will be able to just buy iPads (something from Apple, and they do not need a real computer in a first place) :D

The iPad has content and application based mechanisms to make up for lower margins from hardware alone. Though I don't think many people are going to buy the iPad to never buy anything off of iTunes or the application store.

Apple doesn't want people like me to buy their hardware.

Windows 7 has already sold 60 million licenses. More than the entire os x installed base combined

and my point was any success Windows 7 has is unrelated to a PC maker since they have nothing to do with the OS

and to be fair the market for Windows 7 is also a lot higher since you have to take into account the entire Business sector which is primarily MS. i'm sure these numbers included Enterprise Agreements/OEM/etc. and that diistribution channel is much bigger than anything Apple has, so it really isn't fair to makke that comparison to OSX which is a consumer OS

Colour us blind. Windows with a 95 percent marketshare is selling more than OSX with 5 percent. Who would have thought?
