That, and because let's face it, the 4s, just like the upcoming 5s, is nothing but a spec bump. They wanted to further distinguish between the two

As a 4s owner though, I'm skipping this s, and waiting for the iPhone 6.

Same here regarding upgrading, as I am not sold on the 5 and also have too much viable 30 pin ecosystem equipment and accessories.

Know someone that can only read not write so as you can imagine siri was a bit of a godsend for him.

Otherwise for me it's as useless as newstand.

I actually like Siri and often get good results, unlike most people on here it seems.

However, I wish Siri had offline support.

Offline Siri and offline or cached maps option would be murderous. I like the idea of Google Voice, but Siri is useful because we can call her up with a hardware button. It comes down to that for me.

----------

In hope that you would prematurely upgrade your phone... I can think of no other reason.

While it would have been cool of them to include the option on the 3GS and 4 (I know it was working for those when it was an app store app), from testing Siri is much more responsive with the 4S processor, and even more so with the 5. So they filed this under the rationalization of safeguarding the user experience and hoped that people upgraded quickly.

tell your iphone right now to play a listzomania by phoenix.
then tell it to ask who stars in start trek II: wrath of khan

all legitimate requests...not some obscure request to try to trick it

Siri played Listomania on the first try for me, but I didn't call it "a listzomania (sic)", as that's not the name of the song. I just said "Play the song Lisztomania."

Didn't fare as well specifically for the cast of ST2WoK, but simply searching for "Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan" gave me the right link on IMDB at the top.

Ummmm... When I asked "Play a song by Justin Timberlake", Siri understood me perfectly-- even though I have no songs by Justin Timberlake. Perhaps you really did ask for Charleston Tim Malek?

are you sure your siri is set to german?

Justin Timberlake: Tasten Tenderweg
Psy: Zwei - You should find answers about the iPad 2 at the apple store LOL
Angels & Airwaves: Entschlüssen LOS
Coldplay: Komplett (Complete)
Drake: König (King) LOL

er, yes, yes it can. ask siri how many calories a donut has and Wolfram returns a complete nutritional data card.

So Siri knows what kind of donut I'm eating? That's amazing.

What if I'm eating a chocolate cover donut and a cream cheese donut.

Seems a little misleading...

Right. Exactly the problem. Siri is advertised to understand natural language. It really doesn't. You have to know that Siri won't understand 'who stars in______' you have to learn that Siri can only take bite sized pieces of information - "Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan", and you have to know what bite sized pieces of information Siri's good at. Another example: saying "set an alarm in 1 hour's time to pick up the laundry" won't work... you have to say like this: "Remind me in 1 hour to pick up the laundry". Both sentences make sense, but Siri can only understand the second version of the command. You have to learn that. For some, and it seems like for a lot of people, it's not natural. Ergo, it's not good. Simply peppering it with one-liners like 'Don't worry, I won't forget' doesn't give it a personality..

btw, thanks tips on the spelling of "a listzomania (sic)"............ lol...

No. I do not accept that in relation to 4, a phone one generation old at the time and still sold and supported.

That is like coming to the natural conclusion that OSX Mountain lion is faster and more responsive on a top of the range Mac Pro and so disable features on a MacBook Air to preserve user experience. Nonsense.

Siri's biggest problem, IMO, is lack of common sense intelligence. I ask it to call my fiancé, who is literally 80% of my phone calls. It brings up 5 results for people whose names start with the same letter  Probably the most infuriating is when I'm driving and am dictating a text message. I'll get all the way to "Would you like me to send it?" and it just stops listening and cancels the whole thing. Major road rage.:mad:

I guess the alternative is Google, which literally combs through your stuff. Seriously - thanks for tracking my FedEx package, but it's creepy that they pulled that out of my email without asking

you're doing it wrong.....Siri knows the difference between my girlfriend, and my fiancee...have you told Siri who your fiancee is?

Siriously, when will Apple add multi-tasking to iOS? The hardware can handle running two apps at once. A valid point mentioned in the recent Microsoft tablet adds.

Do you mean two side by side graphically open apps? Umm, I wouldn't hold my breath... right now that would ONLY be a viable experience on iPad full-size.. & even then, only on a small amount of apps. What are you even talking about? What is it that you are wanting to do?
I absolutely LOVE my iOS multitasking. I open soundcloud.com in Safari, start streaming tunes, minimize by tapping the home button, the music is still playing pleasantly, I check my email, etc.. Lol, I hope i dont have to explain to you why having multiple open screens simultaneously on a 4" iPhone screen would not be handy in the slightest, as opposed to.. let's say, a 27" iMac.

I wouldn't brag about that given that Siri has been sat and left to die since the day it was launched, with no compelling new features, fixes or improvements being launched other than (IIRC) a baseball card or something.

Seriously. Apple Maps? Worked near flawlessly for me since day 1. Siri? Had nothing but problems with it since day 1. That recent Microsoft ad making fun of the iPad (and Siri's lack of functionality) should be a giant wake up call for Apple (if they hadn't had one already).

Microsoft has its own problems to worry about, let alone point out a competitors.

They kept it off the iPhone 4 ?? I don't know why they limited it to 4S and 5.

I am still a bit flabbergasted that Maps doesn't provide turn-by-turn directions on the iPhone 4.
Google Maps does. It's not the hardware, the iPhone 4 is up to it... it was a seemingly arbitrary decision.

I have great experiences with Maps but the trouble of course is the reliance on incomplete data from Yelp for places. Not every place is on Yelp.

Google simply had a gargantuan head start with the data for everything.

Google turn by turn works on the iPhone 4, but not very well. It often forgets to tell you to turn, and its ability to reroute directions is poor. With that said, I have Navigon installed on my iphone 4, which does work well.

I suspect the lack if turn by turn by Apple on the iPhone is related to the lack of Siri support.

So now I know who to blame.

I love Apple, but face it, Siri's voice recognition is way behind Google. And until they allow developers to integrate their apps, it'll remain a one-trick pony.

To some posters here, whatever Apple does will always be "behind Google" or "behind Samsung".

Works if I just say Star Trek two. It should work with the whole title however

They never spend a second looking at all the bad results google gives. To the google is 100%

But...but....google can tell me calories for 1000 THOUSAND! foods......unlike all those iOS apps that do the same thing.... What?

Seriously, iOS has been doing multitasking just fine. The music apps excel at this, second to none. What they are talking bout is having two apps side by side (split screen). Unless the two apps know how to collaborate, this is a big meh.

Even the ads for this "feature" basically show you interrupting your activity (watching video, creating a spreadsheet, etc) to basically type out a message. That's not multitasking. Not in any meaningful sense. Nobody needs to watch a movie and type an email.

Aside from the well-known fact that Siri is suboptimal, it is particularly annoying that Apple is in a partnership with Nuance; Dragon Naturally Speaking for Windows is a far superior product to DragonDictate for Mac. You would think that if Apple is closely associated with Nuance, that there might be some improvements with this software to parity with the other platform, but it seems to keep falling further behind….

The next Siri improvement: Movie booking, Dinner reservation now works in several "more" countries.

Apparently since launch, Siri does not serve me in those regional specific stuff other than messaging, calling, the usual. I can't even use Siri to navigate me to places (the Apple maps in my area is cold and un-updated).

Usual response from Siri: Sorry, I don't understand; Sorry, I couldn't find restaurants in Malaysia, And more.

I was referring to MS's tablet advert that shows their tablet using multiple apps simultaneously (ex. Powerpoint open next to an IM app), while the iPad cannot. Meaning, running two apps simultaneously without having to close one to get to the other.

What you're describing are background tasks, requiring the home button to switch between apps, limiting the ability to work with two app's at once. Double click home button, switch to Mail, double click home button, switch to Pages, double click home button, switch to Messages to communicate with work colleague, double click home button... etc, etc. (or use the four finger gestures to access the task bar) That's tedious and isn't an ideal workflow.

Think of it this way, you're on your 27" iMac with a Safari window open next to your Mail window, working between both. Now bring that ability to the iPad. Working in Pages or Keynote, have Messages running down the side of the iPad next to your other app to work with a colleague on a project. :)
