the wired article about the SDK implies that ATT didn't have a problem w/ tethering, so the probelm may be w/ apple not them. What I don't get is why apple would care one way or the other. Or actually, you'd think they'd want the revenue....
Maybe there was some sort of technical glitch and it's only gone down temporarily... (probly wishful thinking...)

Not to mention the fact that AT&T have no problem with tethering, chat and VOIP apps for their Symbian, Java and Windows phones. It looks like Apple are bunch of control freaks.

Could you post the link to this? I'm just kind to lazy to go searching. :D

just a quick update from the UK. about half an hour ago i could still view the app from itunes, but it just wouldn't let me download it.

now, i can search for the app, the app appears with the price and small pic, but when clicked on i get...

Picture%204.png

Same thing in Canada. I can search for it and see it in the store, but can't buy it.

It won't be as functional as your Verizon laptop connect. This app will only work with socks aware applications. Safari on Mac works transparently, ichat needs configuring to use a proxy and mail doesn't work at all.

this works perfectly for what I need...youtube works perfectly with this app, and that's what I really need...only reason why I have verizon wireless for my laptop...my school does not provide wifi...so I have to pay for it...this would save me tons of cash...I just don't want my acct to be deactivated by Att&t

*kicks self for not getting it*

Will be interesting to see what happens with it over the next few days. Will people get charged the extra for tethering.. and since the App was pulled would Apple clear the App off phones and reimburse the money?

i wouldnt either,

however if this isnt "technically tethering" can you get in trouble? especially if you dont even "officially" have an option to tether it seems?

in other words, how can you get in trouble for tethering if the iphone itself is officially unable to tether?

Damn shame

Man, tethering was the last reason I still had for wanting to keep jailbreaking my phone.

Damn shame it got pulled.

Got it working from a Windows XP Laptop. (I'm a mac guy, but my company provided laptop is Windows).

I can't get name resolution to work. I can only get it to work if I enter ip addresses in firefox. Anyone have any idea how DNS works with a SOCKS proxy?

(Edited to say XP instead of NT)

I was able to get Firefox to work properly by setting network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true in about:config

It's a little flaky when using host names instead of ip addresses. I have to reload the page a few times to get it to work.

but the data plans say no tethering.....

care to post a link?
A link to what? Tethering apps and VOIP apps for other phones or a data plan that allows tethering?

Obviously the existence of this application doesn't change the fact that AT&T don't support or allow tethering on the basic iPhone data plan, but other plans are available.

Having said that, neither the iPhone data plan nor the full data plan are truly unlimited, so I don't see why it matters how people use their quota.

ok cool. what is the limit on this unlimited plan? just curious

i know there is a limit, but even so why do they advertise it as unlimited but in reality it isnt?

It gets more and more curious...now Netshare doesn't even show up on a search of the App store, whereas it did an hour or so ago (iTMS Australia).

I want this so bad, but if im going to be billed for excessive use that is just crap. we paid 200 for the phone and like 90 a month for the service (unlimited texting) and we can't tether our phone? I hope something official comes from at&t soon.

ATT probably wants to charge a monthly fee for tethering like Verizon does.

I don't think it's officially quoted anywhere. It really is unlimited for all data usage while operating your phone. The limit will be applied when it becomes obvious to AT&T that your data transfer is higher than is reasonable from a phone under normal use.

It would be interesting to see if anyone has got close to 5GB usage on the iPhone using just safari, youtube and official apps.

I am losing total respect for Apple!! the app doesn't even show up on search anymore...first the Stephen Colbert Episode issue with Nas, and now this...Apple has no*alls!! Where is Steve's back bone!

Has anyone else noticed that nullriver's website is free of references to the app? It could have been released too early (it's probably just me hoping here) or maybe apple got them to pull it... NDA anyone?

Step 1. Click "Instructions".

Step 2. Read Instructions.

Step 3. Follow Instructions?

You must have missed the part where I don't have this app and how I want them to put it back on the store. Smartass. You were so quick to write something that would make a fool out of me that you missed the point. Apple needs to get their services under control. That includes MobileMe, the App Store, and the craptastic 2.0 firmware. I simply thought arn would have enough pull or insider information to find out what's going on with this app, it's removal, and how it was approved in the first place. I think this entire development is rather telling. Apple is so overwhelmed right now to the point of them approving anything. I've noticed the last few days that the quantity coming from the app store is up but the overall quality seems to be down, with a few exceptions. I could have really used this app when at my girlfriends house (no Internet) and while storm chasing. What ticks me off even more is that I had the chance to buy it but waited to look at reviews first. Usually not being an impulse buyer pays off but this time Apple and their overlord AT&T got the last laugh. I'm sorry but I've had it up to here with Apple lately. They have one pretty pissed off customer right now.

Everyone that successfully downloaded the NetPhone app might want to make a copy of the .ipa file outside of their Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications folder. I'm sure it's quite possible that it could disappear from your phone the next time you sync!

I agree, we should either wait this out and see how everyone that got it likes it/handles any issues, and if it continues to work well, someone should post some way for us to access it.

I'm just pissed that this was the one day I didn't check macrumors every 10 minutes because I had hand surgery ...

(P2P?)

Just an official reply from Nullriver....

We're not quite sure why Apple took down the application yet, we've received no communication from Apple thus far. NetShare did not violate any of the Developer or AppStore agreements. We're hoping we'll get some feedback from Apple tomorrow. Sorry to all the folks that couldn't get it in time. We'll do our best to try to get the application back onto the AppStore if at all possible. At the very least, I would hope Apple will allow it in countries where the provider does permit tethering.

We'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks!
