this works perfectly but I do have some questions...it won't let me set up a password when creating the network name, is this dangerous? also, you must have the app open at all times for the tethering to work, is this bad for the iphone ? I plan to be using this maybe an 1hr a day while I teach, to jump on youtube, are there any side affects for the iphone if it's on for an 1hr straight (it would be plugged into a jack so I wouldn't be losing battery charge?

it seems like they removed the app, which sucks!!! but the app does work, and the internet is faster on my laptop with it...right now I'm tethered to my iphone and on macrumors!!

I used the free jailbreak version earlier in the airport when my plane got delayed. It kills your battery, but it was really useful in the end.
Not worried about the battery as I'll just plug it into the USB port on the computer.

I was also too late to purchase this app (I tried both on my desktop and on the phone). Oh well... there's always the jailbreak approach:

Maybe i am not as computer savy as some of you, but even reading the instructions, i am having a heck of a time trying to figure it out. If someone would be nice enough to maybe "dumb" this process down to me that would be incredible.

I tried to get it to work but also having problems even when sticking to the instructions

This isn't technically tethering, so it might avoid legal/contract issues.

Technically the app using the data is the proxy server on the iphone. The iphone is *not* routing a second device (ie your computer) onto the net. So, technically, it's just like any other iphone app that uses data.

Another example would be say, running a VNC server on the iphone and connecting to it from your computer and browsing the net with it. You're still browsing the net with an iphone app, you're just controlling it remotely. (And if this seems useless, consider running a compiled X11 version of firefox over ssh with X forwarding.) This shouldn't violate a contract either.

oh god I hope you are right!!! I would cancel my verizon wireless for my laptop ASAP!!! I have my fingers crossed!

hmm when I go to download it it says its not available in the US Store... so guess they caught onto it and disabled it in the US and only allow it in other countries that offer Tethering.

no one has answered my questions, can i tether and use free wifi...at starbucks when it is free for iphone users. I don't want to use this as 3g tether, i want to use it as a wifi one. please let me know

1) You can just connect your computer to the starbucks WIFI, it'll be easier and probably faster.

2) I don't think the iPhone could be on two wifi networks at once (The starbucks wifi and the adhoc one it creates).

3) See #1.

maybe one of the nice people that got it to work could help us with our troubles, it would be very kind of them. it seems in the USA we are one of few with this APP lets spread the love!

what if you get caught???

If you jailbreak, run a proxy on the iphone, don't actually route for your computer. That should avoid any contract issues/extra charges.

The proxy is the only app talking to the net. The fact that your are having a private communication between the iphone and your computer on a private network is not relevant nor any of their business! :)

Not available in the US Store

Is everybody else in the US getting this message, "The item you've requested is not currently available in the US Store."??

What about outside the US??

Any success from an international itunes store??

It won't be as functional as your Verizon laptop connect. This app will only work with socks aware applications. Safari on Mac works transparently, ichat needs configuring to use a proxy and mail doesn't work at all.

I'm getting the same message in the US. God, I have been waiting for the App, and now it's GONE!!! I can't believe I missed it!

I am extremely frustrated that i missed the opportunity to download this application.
Having this app would make the case for upgrading to the 3G a lot stronger.

I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow and i'd probably be adding the laptop to my bag as we speak if this app was on my phone.

I posted the same question about 10-15mins ago..

I got the "Not available in US store"

I'm thinking it slipped onto the US App store by accident, but it could be available in other countries..

I think thunderbird supports socks proxies. Good in a pinch even if you still want to use Mail.app normally.

DAMN! that sucks so much. I was to late to get it and i'm kind of pissed now. I wasn't planning on jail breaking my 3g (my iPhone Edge was jail broken), but now I think I might jail break. Apple and AT&T are being so gay.

Now that we've got a way to move apps from phone to phone with jailbreaking, couldn't this app theoretically be released and put on other phones?

I mean, we have a way to do this now, though, but it's an interesting THEORETICAL question.

Not in Australia either.

"The item you've requested is not currently available in the Australian Store." - so no real joy there either.
