Not a lot of people use WINDOWS tablets
Yes, but why?
There are probably good reasons for that.

but a lot of people would use an OSX tablet
case in point
What "case in point"? Just people sitting around with their notebooks. There is no reference to a tablet whatsoever. And why should they want to use an OS X tablet? Maybe they would want to buy one, but the great majority would not want to use them anymore after getting it. It is a really fundamental problem: text input on tablets is slow, tedious and error-prone. It's nowhere near the speed and easiness of mechanical keyboards. And Apple cannot change that overnight, as their current inkwell technology is way behind Vista's. So why would people want to use an OS X tablet rather than a Windows one?

And what are you going to do with a notebook which you cannot effectively type text on like on other keyboards? It's a suboptimal user experience even for basic internet browsing. A convertible maybe? Taking the same route as some PC tablet makers? Apple doesn't really offer convertible products. I believe it's against their design philosophy. That is also why the MacBook Air is the MacBook Air, and not some tablet, I'd say. If they could have pulled off a great tablet, they would have done it instead of releasing the Air.

Tablets are the most overrated potential Apple product nowadays.

Omg!

GUYS!?!

Stop hanging out for new macbooks next week!

We are in the worst economic crisis in 80 years!
We are in the midst of the final few weeks of the presidential race!

There is zero reason for Apple to release new computers now for two big reasons:

1 - people are going to be thinking twice about buying big ticket non-essential items at present, especially business users.

2. There is little chance of Apple getting any press in the mainstream media - the economic crisis and presedential race are taking up ALL the headlines.

I think apple would have to wait till at least after the election to get maximum benefit out of a product intro in the press.

Hope I'm wrong (as i'm keen to see what arrives), but I dont think so.

Sorry, not sure how to quote!

So - I think Apple would release new laptops - if they've spent the money on R&D, they'll want a longer period to sell them in. And arguably the economic crisis will last at least another year, with a slow recovery. Apple are hardly going to wait that long to release another laptop.

I just can't imagine Apple stealing the thunder from Nvidia by spoiling their new chipset one day in advance of their own press event (or whatever Nvidia will do the 15th). That just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

My .50 thoughts.
Maybe I can help you with the other .50 on your buck. ;)

Ask yourself: Would Apple really be "spoiling" anything for Nvidia here?

I mean... Apple's got lots of good karma and is widely regarded as being a really innovative player in the industry, aren't they? It is a company you as a component maker would want to be associated with in some way, isn't it? That's also why that Intel guy (Otellini) has been a guest at Steve's keynotes. I Apple announce notebooks with this Nividia chipset on the 14th, they surely aren't going to tell any details about it. But there would be a certain buzz with insiders what's so great about this chipset and why Apple abandons Intel's integrated offerings. That's good press for Nvidia. Builds some anticipation.

Can't you see Nvidia following up gladly the day after? To tell the juicy technical details about this stuff and how this is being leveraged in Apple's great brand-new notebooks?

Well, I don't claim to know anything about this Nvidia chipset, if it's any good, if Apple will use it, etc. But I do think you could make a great case for how NVIDIA's date actually rather supports the idea of Apple releasing something on the 14th. Apple gets a brand-new chipset that "hasn't even been announced yet and improves on Intel's graphics so much" while NVIDIA gets a positive "it's in the new MacBook" spin for their announcement.

;)

just for info, here in germany it looks that the amount of available macbooks in stocks of the online retailers are low now:

see yourself:

17" MBP: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?cat=nb17&xf=525_Apple

15" MBP: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?cat=nb15w&xf=525_Apple

MB: http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?cat=nb13&xf=525_Apple

if you click on the different configurations you will get a list with all retailers that have the model in catalogue, but unless there is a green rectangle with the words "sofort lieferbar" right beside the store name it means that the model is out of stock, and so are the most. (the green light in the overviews does only mean that any of the listed retailers does have this model in stock)

conclusion: seems as if 80% of the listed retailers do not have the books in stock anymore

since english is not my native tongue i say sorry if there are any errors in grammar or spelling

Hola! yo tambien soy de España, de Madrid :)

Hi! I'm from Spain too, from Madrid :)

+1

Would all those students in that photo happily writing notes on their laps want to be looking down more, and also using up screen space with a big unresponsive screen based keypad? Then when studying in the library later have less screen real estate and be looking down for hours, trying to write essays etc. Or prop it up and have aching arms from holding your arms in the air for hours? Or have a separate plug in physical keypad to take everywhere and try to balance on their knees with the display instead? A laptop is designed to have fast simple text input, and it's full screen for viewing. Unless you can get a cheap touchscreen to use AS WELL (which you can't at decent size), then touchscreens are limited to small portable devices, where size and space is at a premium. If I was at college still I'd rather a slightly larger laptop for spending hours of being productive on, or a smaller pocket-sized iphone type device for little use. For most the mid-sized keyboardless tablet falls half way between pocket sized convenience, and notebook usefulness, so fails at both. Unless they do a laptop with touchscreen, that folds over into a tablet I don;t see them having the widespread appeal of either a pocket sized mini-app coms device (iphone), or a proper fully-functioning computer with physical keyboard input with added multi-gesture touchpad (macbook).

The MBA is already a niche device for people who want lightweight portability over power (which is generally something for people with a bit of a surplus of cash, or their company is paying for it). So maybe :apple: will make one, but it won't be a big seller. I'd want an iPhone (for ultimate portability), MBP (for powerful portability), and MP (for fixed use ultimate power), but never see any need for a tablet as the MB/MBP would always be a better option if a couple of little notes on an iPhone or piece of paper won't do. Obviously this is all just my opinion, but can anyone suggest what type of apps they'd run on an iTablet in what circumstances? I'll happily be proven wrong.

Same here in Denmark. Humac - the official Apple retailer here - is all out of MBs and MBPs

Hmmm, I thought that the point of the Apple "1984" ad and "Think Differently" and the other stuff was to avoid being one of the mindless drones.

Guess not, anymore....

Also, ya gotta love all those "professionals" with their aluminium Apple Pros.... Nice Ivy League status symbols - daddy has lots of money.

But, at least they have taste. I don't see a single tacky white plastic Apple book in the room ;)

look at the douchelord front centre. "sup brah, i got some sweet porn dude. check it."

I just checked on PCWorld (UK) again and they all seem to be in stock apart from 2.5ghz MBP. I assume Apple Retail will still have plenty of stock until they do eventually release updated kit.

Maybe I can help you with the other .50 on your buck. ;)
You did provide some valuable insights, indeed. But I can't agree on one point you've made.

It can't be that Apple adds the new MacBook in their store the 14th without providing any details about the technical side of the notebook.

I don't think anyone would buy a laptop without knowing about its inside technical specs. At least I wouldn't buy a "cat in a sack" so to say.

I think a lot of people buy computers without knowing or understanding the differences of technical specs.
Walk into a high street computer store, all they're after is your budget (and an extended warranty sale).

We are in the worst economic crisis in 80 years!
We are in the midst of the final few weeks of the presidential race!

Economic crisis isn't going away in a few weeks.
Apple released updated iBooks a couple of weeks or so before the 2004 election.

It can't be that Apple adds the new MacBook in their store the 14th without providing any details about the technical side of the notebook.
Why not?
That's what they're doing all the time.

Currently it says "Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory" on the MacBook page at apple.com. No word about shader units, clock rates, TDP, DirectX support, etc. etc. And there's is even less in Apple's press announcements. The hardware developer notes are not published until some weeks or months later. Apple would not need to announce more than "NIVIDA GeForce 4321 mobile graphics with 256 RAM, delivering up to 75% better performance"

I don t think the crisis made Apple change her plans.
too many of my collegues need a new Macbook-MPro.
I m searching for a used one for my girlfriend.
I know 20 people ready to buy a Mac laptop at the day of presentation.

it is time we understand that a computer is a must have these days.
almost all the academic community has PC-Macs and they are usefull...

ok i agree the economic situation is not the best but saying we have no money for a computer is like saying you need no cell phone or tv or a kitchen!

for the people in the early 30s and late 20s a computer is must have for their work-hobbies-studies-friends-music-photos.

those things define us...so we need them to help us.

my bet is for 21 Oct.
I have a MBP Penryn but i need a macbook Alu for academic activity...

Macbook Air fits into a smaller niche then a tablet. More people would want a tablet then an Air. Tons of artists and students want one. And thats Apples demo. So why wouldn't they come out with one? Oh because the windows versions isn't a hit? Apple could do better I am sure of it and they will.

Another edit: If the windows version is such a non hit then why the hell does each company have one?
http://web.archive.org/web/19970715124703/http://www.apple.com/
:sighs: emate! where are you?:(

edit: And to hell with economic crisis the world doesn't orbit around America.

i dont think apple will holdback their new lineup due to eco crisis...
and the crisis isnt going away in just a few weeks... not even months.... it may take decades....
any further waiting will just let the competitors increase the gap of market share... because which average customer would prefer a mac which cost 400 dollar more than a pc notebook and just have 70% the power compared with the current gen notebooks.
i mean u get 4gb ram, decent graphiccard and 300gb for 900 dollars or somethin like that.
and people like we here are an exception... get it guys...
there are a hell lot of people who doesnt care about macrumors and just buy as they need them. not all are gadgets addicted like we are... they are satisfied with the last gen ipods even though new came out and they give a damn.

I am not an expert on macs, but the one on the far right, is that in the current range?

EDIT: Sorry, just realized it is the Air. I was just confused about the color.
