Ok, now that is harsh.
...I still think the main flaw is the lack of stock. Apple are the ones to blame here. If there was going to be plenty of stock then we would have all calmly waited and collected our phones at o2 stores or ordered on line during the course of the week. Instead we know that stock is limited and we all rushed like idiots to order first thing in the morning!

Apple certainly have to take some blame - O2 (which had a knock-on effect for) CW were told that they weren't going as much stock as it had wanted only relatively recently and the rough number of units only confirmed in the last 2 weeks. I've heard the total stock of CW and couldn't believe how low the number was.

Yes it equates to 2million iphones in 2.5 minutes, but that was what was crashing the system. Probably the same 100,000-200,000 people all trying to upgrade!!! WE all did it....refresh, refresh refresh refresh.......

Mr Sturrock claims there were 13,0000 orders per second. Lets be clear here - he does not claim 13,000 attempted orders, or even 13,000 page impressions. This is clearly a lie.

You know what, I've been knocking O2 all day yesterday and I just want to point somthing out. I have had nothing but good service from O2 since moving from Carphone warehouse. I don't get charged to call them where as carphone warehouse was sooooo expensive to call their 0870 or 0845 number. I rarely have to wait more than 2 mins (usually straight away) to speak to a human where as again I used to wait 8-15 mins a time on CPW!
Yes, yesterday was a big balls up, but you still managed to get through to their CS. Trust me....CPW CS would have taken you best part of an hour. AND YES they didn't know what was going on, but this is unusual for a mobile phone company to have to deal with. Name one other phone EVER that has had people falling over themselves to get. Come on.....I guarantee you that the next iphone won't have any of these problems on O2 as they will be well prepared and handle things completely differently.

I pointed out that ticket companies can deal with the volume, but it took them years to be able to do that!! I remember them crashing all the time and people complaining left right and centre. Experience people....this is the first time it has ever happened to a mobile phone company.

I have a dilema which many of you i'm sure will share.

I tried for hours to get an upgrade order in and failed but I also submitted the "failover" form about 20 times, one of which resulted in a "Thank you... blah blah" the rest were various errors.

So there should be at least one record in a database somewhere that I have made an order, the likelyhood is there is more than one with the number of times i submitted that form. How do I know that this will not be picked up and processed once someone gets around to it? I.e. if I go and buy a phone on Friday I don't want to be charged again the next week...

Has anyone put this one to O2?

It's irrelevant to me. I'm buying one at a store on Friday regardless. If a courier turns up on Friday with another one I'll just send it back.

That's part of the problem when you're launching a product in 22 countries at the same time. When the original iPhone came out, each country virtually got its own launch, so supplying stock was not a problem.

Yup - this is rubbish - I successfully placed my upgrade order with an order number of 00016XX

My friend next to me successfully completed his order upto 5 mins after me - his order number: 00017XX

Try about 25 successful orders per minute

The correct word there is SUCCESSFULLY. How many failed?

I visited the O2 store in Kirkcaldy today and they said that iPhone upgrades will be possible in store.

Just had an email from O2 Customer Services that includes this:

Please be reassured that for new and eligible to upgrade O2 customers including iPhone existing customers, there will be iPhones available in store from normal trading timings on the 11 July. All iPhone stock is being sold on a first come, first served basis.

Not to put a downer on all this, but i dont understand why everyone comes back to say they've spoken to someone at O2 at some store or on the phone, these people know are as useful as a chocolate fireplace!

I mean honestly we, the many here that have been waiting since april (ish) for this phone know more than any "iphone expert" at O2 let alone the muppets in the stores!

Because you're not explaining it to people - you're listing your owned Apple products in your sig - at least get the names right if you're posting messages about others' lack of product knowledge!

Is that better. Can you understand that "sig"?

Oh, and by the way i was saying "we on here" know more about the iphone than O2. You think thats untrue?

It was only a bit of teasing captain. Bring back the iTouch!

As for O2 employees, I'm sure you're absolutely right. To most of them it's just another phone and they can't see what all the fuss is about.

When I phoned my local O2 store to find out what time they were opening on Friday he had to ask his colleague why they were opening early.

From O2 Press Office

Hi,

It’s Nicola from the O2 Press Office.

I just wanted to make sure you guys have the correct information - the iPhone 3G will be available on Pay & Go in time for the Christmas shopping season, not this Friday 11th July, and we will provide more precise details closer to this time.

I am sorry that our customer service adviser got it wrong and we have issued a clear brief to make sure all our customer service advisers have the correct information.

Check our website out for further information o2.co.uk/iphone if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

Nicola

Hmm... what does this mean for those of us hoping to give our old 2.5G iPhone to a loved one on Pay as you Go? Assuming, of course, that we're lucky enough to get one in the first place (a 3G iPhone, I mean, not a loved one). Are we just able to pick up a SIM card in-store when we buy the 3G?

Not a problem.
The existing iPhone that comes off a contract because it's contract has been upgraded to 3g, can go 'Pay n Go' now, with a pay n go sim from O2.

What you can't do yet is purchase a 'Pay n Go' 3g iPhone

Copied from O2 website
Bold is my emphasis:

Existing O2 Pay & Go customers can use their current O2 Pay & Go SIM card or new customers can join O2 by getting a free Pay & Go iPhone SIM card from an O2 store. Then add the unlimited Web and Wi-Fi iPhone Bolt On (£10 a month). The only thing that does not work with this option is the Visual Voicemail.

Brilliant. Just checking. I'm assuming the PAYG iPhone will be subject to O2's standard PAYG call/text charges?

The real question is about the failover form.

I think despite concerns from those of you who have confirmation numbers - I am 100% certain you will get the phones you ordered on Friday...I think your just looking for reasons to worry uneccessarily!

There is no stock as the phone isn't out yet but on Thursday all of you will get the phones posted out.

Meanwhile - I do wonder as I just said about the failover form. I did e-mail o2 and complained and they sent me this reply (although they did not directly mention the failover form I did ask them about it). The e-mail said:

"We're processing all upgrade requests and will be in touch with you by text or email no later than tomorrow afternoon, when we'll confirm whether your order has been successfully received.

We're working as fast as we can to deal with the high volumes of upgrade requests we received, but we cannot confirm for you at the moment whether your upgrade was successful. We recognise that this has not been a brilliant experience and apologise for the obvious frustration, but we are doing everything we can to resolve the situation as soon as possible."

I would like to know even if it isn't successful! that would be nice to hear! and of course maybe I will get an e-mail telling me I would get the phone in a week!

It's not particuarly helpful and I imagine I will still be in store on Friday.

I almost wish I had signed up for a new contract and then maybe I could have cancelled it and upgraded in the following days but at least had the phone!

ok, ok - gotta keep calm!

Just checked my credit card transactions on line. Since I ordered the 16gb at 9:28 yesterday morning I have had a 'pending' charge of £159 showing up on my credit card (CapOne).

Just checked tonight (3 mins ago) and the transaction has gone through!

Now as o2 are reputable trader I *know* that they do not take the money till they know they are shipping the goods

The o2 order tracker is still showing 'in progress' BTW

I night need Friday off work after all!

If not I'm just gonna watch the TWiT.tv coverage by Leo Laporte and SULK

iPhone PAYG tarriffs UK

Just comeback form CarPhoneWarehouse at Meadowhall UK. When asked about the Pay-as-You-Go, the young lady, after checking with someone else said: "from December; Cost about £500.00 we think!".

At that price I'll give it a miss and either choose a Nokia, one of BT's offerings, or iPhone on a contract.
